German international development cooperation in Latin America
Zavadilová, Barbora ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Eberle, Jakub (referee)
The bachelor thesis discusses the German development policy in Latin America between years 1990 and 2011. The region is not considered to be a part of German key strategic interests. However, the Federal republic plays a role of a "global donor" and supports the countries of Latin America significantly and carries out major development projects there. The thesis will firstly present the basic political context, describe the mutual relationships between Germany and Latin America and analyse key interests that are the base for the development cooperation. In the following part, the concept of a civilian power will be applied to the German development policy in the region to observe to which amount the character of the cooperation corresponds with the basic attributes of foreign policy of a normative-oriented civilian power as an ideal type. Statements of the executive representatives, government policy papers, statistical data and opinions of the academic sectors undergo the analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development policy with the monitored region in its complexity and analyse which meanings do the German actors assign to the examined reality.
Jan Klecanda - Havlasa, his life and relation to Brazil
Kratochvílová, Lucie ; Binková, Simona (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
Jan Havlasa was the first Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Brazil, a distinguished writer and explorer. The purpose of this thesis is to present the explorer's life. Havlasa visited Slovakia after finishing secondary school, and soon after he travelled also to Italy; Saint Louis, Missouri; or the island of Tahiti. After the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, Havlasa served as the Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Brazil (1920-1924); in 1943, Czechoslovak president Edvard Beneš called him back into diplomatic service, this time as the Ambassador to Chile. Among his most important formative experiences we can find his membership in the Opium Commission of the League of Nations. Despite the fact that Havlasa spent most of his life abroad, he never relinquished his homeland: he took interest in the situation of Czechoslovakia and fought for its independence on the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. His extensive lecturing activities, as well as his treatise Colonial Policy in Relation to the Great War earned him one year of gaol in Vienna. The thesis also takes into account Havlasa's extensive literary work and his lectures, which took place all over Czechoslovakia and during which he presented his books, photographs and travel experience to his readers and listeners.
Role of Brazil in Latin American Integration Processes
Kazaková, Jelena ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
From the beginning of the 21st century an increased attention has been paid to the achievements of so called "emerging powers" in the world economy and global politics. Given the initial disadvantageous position of developing countries in the international power constellation, new regional actors are forced to apply different leadership strategies than their predecessors. This paper examines the role of Brazil in Latin American integration processes with the aim to identify Brazilian foreign policy strategies used for promotion of its regional leadership and global recognition. Neoclassical causal chain of variables will be applied in order to identify main interest of Brazil in region formation and to determine the key domestic and foreign incentives motivating Brazil to pursue active regional integration. The concept of consensual hegemony will be applied in order to explain systemic outcome of Brazilian regional strategy.
Brazilian emigration in Portugal after its adherence to the European Community
Stanzelová, Magdalena ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
Bachelor thesis Brazilian emigration in Portugal after its adherence to the European Community deals with the migration flow coming from Brazil to Portugal after 1986. It describes its evolution in time, concentrating on the comparison of its specific waves. The work gives an overview of the factors that cause that the Brazilians often choose Portugal as their target country, as well as treaties that give this relationship an international framework. The thesis analyses the causes, development and consequences of this migration flow. The second part of the work is dedicated to the comparison of the first wave of immigration that started in the late 1980s, and the second one, that took place between 1998 and 2003. The work aims to prove that both waves differ in motives of emigration, as well as in qualification and education level of the emigrants and their incorporation on the Portuguese labour market.

Trnková, Kateřina ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Hubeňáková, Julie (referee)
This thesis focuses on theoretical and empirical analysis of Brazilian favelas. In the first part the origin and development of favelas is outlined, including the contemporary public policy towards them. The main part of this thesis represents an empirical research focusing on visualization of culture by the children living in favelas. The data collection was based on the methodology of visual anthropology and the analysis of the drawings on social semiotic theory. Drawings made by the children from favelas in São Paulo with culture as their subject matter were collected during the fieldwork. On the basis of the kind of represented motif the drawings were classified into several categories which the author works with afterwards. Most of them depict motifs related to Brazilian culture and only few of them are directly linked to favela's culture. Based on these results, it is considered cultural elements perceived strongly by the children and components which in spite of their close connection to Brazil were omitted. Keywords: favela, visualization of culture, children's drawing, culture, Brazil
Government Policies of Isolated Indigenous Peoples and their Successes and Failures
Scholz, Eric ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
Since the expansion of globalization and the mapping of the world, mostly by Europeans, there has been a massive shift in the ways of life for many groups throughout the world. When these groups met each other one, often the Europeans, the almost always more technologically advanced group, dominated the others and brought them into a globalizing world. After centuries of this, some of these groups continue to exist in their traditional lifestyles, having not been integrated into Europeanized societies or the globalized world, and often still living, quite literally, naked in the hinterlands. This research offers a unique analysis as to how these groups are treated by modern societies, with emphasis on their legal status and protections, and the material outcome of these policies. This includes things like if the groups were successfully integrated, or if they are suffering from pollution, violence, discrimination, or other factors. Three case studies are chosen: India, Peru, and Brazi, for their unique positions in being home to many of these groups.

CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE Institute of Political Science Department of Geopolitical Studies Master's Thesis Populism and the Covid-19 Pandemic in Latin America: A Case Study of Brazil Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic confronted the world with a global health crisis like never before. Unlike some countries which were able to manage the crisis with little loss, some countries failed. The results displayed that Bolsonaro attempted to perform a crisis by simplifying the crisis and propagating his performance, but untimely failed to successfully perform the crisis. In addition, the results also indicate that Bolsonaro exercised medical populism by attempting to pit the people against the establishment and creating a dramatic and spectacular depiction of a public health crisis. Sport for Development in Brazil: Gendered Perspective
Soares Moura, Eva ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Hacker, Hanna (referee) ; Knoppers, Annelies (referee)
The sport for development and peace (SDP) sector has become a fast-evolving field which has received significant academic and public attention. Given the continued commitment to gender equality in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, sport has been positioned as a vessel for women's empowerment, a term which continues to be the object of much academic debate and dispute. Drawing on feminist theories of development and empowerment, the purpose of this thesis is to explore (a) how young people engage in the development project and (b) to critically examine the potential of such programmes in advancing transformation in gender relations and in offering new opportunities for challenging gender stereotypes inside and outside of sport. This thesis draws upon eleven months of ethnographic research undertaken between 2017 and 2018 in two organizations in São Paulo, Brazil, which use sport-mainly football-to empower women and achieve broader societal objectives within low-income communities. I conducted participant observations and fifty semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, managers, and educators as well as the participants of the projects and their parents. The findings of this research suggest that there is ambiguity regarding the role of sport-for-development (SFD) programmes in...
