Israel and Czechoslovakia: RFE/RL on the relations of the two countries, 1967-1971
Ďurková, Michaela ; Kubátová, Hana (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
This thesis deals with the relations between Czechoslovakia and Israel in 1967-1971. It is specifically concerned with anti-Zionist policies of the socialist regime, which reflected themselves not only in the anti-Israeli stance of Czechoslovakia, but also in the relations of state authorities towards Jewish minority, and bore antisemitic characteristics. Contrary to lasting rigorous refusal of antisemitism since 1940s/50s, Czechoslovakia manifested its hostility towards Israel on regular basis. Struggle against Zionism was one of the aims of the Czechoslovak ideological war against alleged or real adversaries. For the regime, Israel represented West, and West was full of so called centres of ideological diversion. One of such centres was also Radio Free Europe (RFE). Author of the thesis assumes that RFE not only reflected the ideological struggle concerning Jews and "Zionists," in Czechoslovakia, but also played a role of a counter-balancing force in the matter. By means of analysis of RFE situation reports, the thesis evaluates the extent of RFE counter-balance of the Czechoslovak anti-Zionist ideology. After theoretical introduction (chapter one), changes in the relations of Czechoslovakia towards Israel and local Jewish community in 1945-1967 are described. Second chapter also debates tension...

The attention is also paid to the development of national particularism, its ideas and to the idea of national exceptionality. However, the idea of national exceptionality puts the unexceptional "others" on the opposite pole of the same axis and subsequently leads to their discrimination and persecution. The law then becomes the perfect tool to discriminate against and persecute these "others". Main attention is thus paid to racial legislation of the Nazi Germany, which were based on conclusions of eugenics "scientists" of the time. The diploma thesis therefore in detail discusses the Nuremberg Laws, as well as other subsequent by-laws,...

Mikhalek, Kristina ; Arava-Novotná, Lena (advisor) ; Nosek, Bedřich (referee)
1 Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the establishment of a settlement zone in the Russian Empire. This is an interesting topic, because there was no such thing in other states. It is difficult to compare the Pale of settlement with the ghettos that existed in Europe. The first chapter describes the origin of Pale of settlement itself. The second chapter discuss the general definition of Pale of settlement and the issue of translation of this term into the Czech language. The third chapter focuses on the historical context, the main emphasis is put on the legislation in Russia that was enacted in relation to Jews. It is also very important to mention the attitude to Jews of each tsar and official, because then their attitude was reflected in the laws. The last chapter presents an attempt to formulate the causes of Pale of settlement. The work is based mainly on contemporary literature and contemporary legislative activity, which gives the opportunity to best understand the attitude of the Russian government to the Jews of the Russian Empire. As a result, it can be assumed that Anti-Judaism, which went through its own age development, but from the beginning played only a small role, was very widespread in Russia. Therefore, it had little effect on the establishment of Pale of settlement. The main reason...
