Permanent Structured Cooperation and European Intervention Initiative as Preludes of a Single European Army
Urban, Patrik ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Földes, Kristián (referee)
The master's thesis focuses on the potential of two recently launched initiatives, The Permanent Structured Cooperation and The European Intervention Initiative, to serve as preludes of the single European army. Both initiatives shared high expectations as vehicles for a relaunch of integration in defence domain in Europe, but do they really move the efforts in this respect forward? To study the two projects, we establish a unique theoretical measurement of defence and security integration, based on the realist concept of the alliance and constructivist concept of the security community. We then ask what constructivist theoretical model for the study of defence integration fits The Permanent Structured Cooperation best, and analogically, which archetype is the most suitable for The European Intervention Initiative. Based on the theoretical underpinnings, we carry out an empirical analysis of both initiatives to find out what novelties they bring to the area of defence. We focused mainly on their governance, institutional fabric and funding. Special attention was paid to varying level of pooled sovereignty. The thesis is built on the content analysis of primary sources and where appropriate on relevant secondary literature.
Middle East - a new playground for hegemonic rivalry
Kadović, Marija ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (referee)
Throughout history, the relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been dynamic and complex. These two Middle Eastern superpowers went from being allies to being enemies that are fighting for hegemony in the region after the Iranian Revolution. Ideological and religious reasons are usually used to explain the shift in their relationship. However, the complexity oftheirrelationship can notonly be described by them. This thesis aims to analyse changes that occurred in the relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia through the lens of the role that leadership played in their relationship, focusing on the impact that public support has on decisions brought by leadership. Already existing literature that relates to this research is mainly focusing on democratic countries. Therefore, this thesis aims to show that public opinion is vital for the non-democratic Middle Eastern leadership of Iran and Saudi Arabia, as well. It will determine leadership decisions related to their mutual relationship, as well as relations they have with other foreign powers, such as the United States and Russia.
NATO and European Security in the East: The Impact of the Ukraine-Russia Conflict on NATO Doctrine and Ukrainian Strategy
Tymchuk, Halyna ; Záhora, Jakub (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
This diploma thesis will basically work with the concept of security, namely, the European secu- rity in recent years. Although Ukraine is not a NATO member, and Russia is NATO's distant neighbour, in this thesis I will prove that we should connect the events on Ukrainian border with European security. From the very onset of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, NATO was firm in its support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The Allies immediately condemned the illegal "legitimate annexation" of the Crimea to Russia in March 2014 and they have repeatedly stated that they would never recognize it as well. They also condemned deliberate destabilization in eastern Ukraine which was provoked by Russia with the use of its military intervention and militants' support. The crisis in Ukraine has proved to be a real turning point in Euro-Atlantic security since some senior Western politicians began to speak about changes in the guideline of European defense policy. Ukrainian crisis created new security situation in Europe and still requires attention, in- volvement and response from NATO. This crisis sharpened strategic misunderstanding between Russia and the West. It shows very clearly that Moscow and the West understand European security in...
Charles de Gaulle and his changing perspectives on Germany
Čech, Damián ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The main focus of the bachelor thesis Charles de Gaulle and his changing perspectives on Germany will be the personality of Charles de Gaulle and his understanding of the Germany depending on his various life periods. In order to process this subject of the thesis, I will use the analysis of the memoirs, notes and letters, which will be divided thematically. The thesis covers the period of 1919-1969. The main goal of the thesis is to process and interpret the thoughts of de Gaulle in relation with Germany. De Gaulle as one of the most important personality of the twentieth century is mentioning Germany quite often, being one of his centers of interest. The bachelor thesis will try to illustrate the different images of the Germany that appear in his memoirs and how are the images changing in the reaction of the development of the mutual relations. The thesis will be also focusing on the language and expressions used to describe the Germany and will try to clarify them to the reader. Last but not the least I will try to answer the question, whether de Gaulle had a stable opinion on Germany or whether the opinion was changing depending on the current international situation.
The causes of terrorist radicalisation among Northern Irish Catholics
Parolek, Jan ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Charvát, Jan (referee)
This work deals with the question of whether, in the case of terrorist radicalization of Northern Irish Catholics (being both national and a religious minority in the Northern Ireland and de facto also in the UK) during 'The Troubles', was ideology only a function of Catholics' socio-economic grievances, or a standalone, individually decisive factor. The thesis explores the motivations for terrorism as they are stated in personal testimonies, group surveys, or other sources. The theory of Radicalization Puzzle, viewing the radicalization as a complex non-linear combination of four variously strong categories of reasons (grievances, ideologies, networks and support structures) is used. After establishing the definitions of terrorism and minority status, exploring the Irish-British history and the validity of minority status of Northern Irish Catholics, the paper brings together the stated reasons for radicalisation and combines them in a "mental map." Several broad categories of reasons are identified and overlaid with the Puzzle categories. It is found that grievances were a big motivational factor for terrorism, but they were overwhelmingly of social kind, mostly sectarian or state violence. Economic grievances as a dominant radicalising factor were very rare. The Republican ideology has also been a...
US cooperation with the Middle East in the fight against the Islamic state
Koláč, Vojtěch ; Calda, Miloš (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
The Islamic State's phenomenon has been the subject of many analyses since its inception, and in 2018 it is a very dynamic, dynamic issue with a global dimension. The main goal of the bachelor thesis is to find out in what way the approach to defeating the "IS" in the four major powers, except the USA, also in the concepts of Russia, Iran and Turkey based on a search of available literature, domestic and foreign articles and analysis of elaborated strategic documents. The Middle East is a region where the interests of global actors meet the national interests of local powers. This work also aims to define the ways in which the Islamic State influences and influences the strategic interests of four selected actors: the United States of America, Russia, Turkey and Iran. Analytical and descriptive methods are used in the work. Because of the topicality of the issue, it is largely drawn from internet sources, in the form of expert analyses and newspaper articles, to a lesser extent from the final works and book publications.
The U.S.-Japan Alliance: Key Building Stone of Obama's Pivot to Asia?
Srpová, Laura ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Bečka, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the impact of the Obama administration's foreign policy strategy of rebalancing to Asia and its implications for the U.S. - Japan security alliance. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the success in meeting the goals of rebalancing to Asia, taking into account the implications for the U.S. - Japan security alliance. In my thesis I focus mainly on the evaluation of the strategy and its goals, and analysis of the inner and outer challenges to the alliance. Finally, the thesis also analyzes the key documents of the U.S. - Japan alliance, which are the Guidelines for U.S. - Japan Defense Cooperation and the U.S. National Security Strategy from the year 2015. In the conclusion, I claim that Obama's strategy of rebalancing to Asia was only partially successful, whereas the majority of goals were not met because of the difficult domestic political and economic situation of both allies. Another reason for the partial success of the rebalance strategy were the unfavorable international circumstances, which distracted the United States and forced it to focus its financial and political resources to other regions of the world.

The Middle Eastern alliances: Analysis of relations and further development of the region
Eštoková, Denisa ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
Examining any topic in the Middle East requires a general knowledge because of the region's complexity and dynamics. Important characteristics is the link of Islam and politics, because this relation shaped political establishment of states. The strategic location and rich natural resources of this part of the world were tempting also for the global superpowers whose engagement divided the Middle Eastern states, particularly during the Cold War. An analysis of the factors and events that led to the formation of alliances and rivalries in the Middle East is the goal of this work. Research will focus on alliances of Iran and its Shia allies on the one hand and Saudi Arabia with the rest of Sunni monarchies on the other. Unlike other alliances mentioned in the work, these two blocks have long term character. They are also specific because of sectarian differences, their stance towards the United States and Israel and shared responses to emerging threats. Historical development of Middle Eastern alliances begins with the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, continues with the both World wars, the Israeli-Arab conflict, the Islamic revolution in Iran and other milestones which were meaningful in shaping inter-state relations in the region. The modern period moves from invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq to...

Křížová, Lucie ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Dvořák, Pavel (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with deployment of German army within ISAF strategy in Afghanistan. The deployment of military forces is one of the most discussed queries in German politics and among German public. The thesis analyses the development in Afghanistan from 2001 to September 2013. The thesis is divided into three parts. Firstly, I define the theory of role and the concept of civil power, which is one of approaches for analysis of foreign policy. I define some criteria and according to them I examine, if Germany behaves in Afghanistan as civil power, for which is it considered. In the following part I deal with the development in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2009. I analyse the beginning of OEF and ISAF operations, mandate's extensions, the reasons for deployment in Afghanistan and the development of the security situation in country. The main part of this thesis is the deployment of German army within new ISAF strategy in Afghanistan, which was declared by American president Barack Obama in 2009.
