A Contrastive Approach in Teaching Czech Language to Czech Deaf

This work deals with the issue of teaching Czech language to Czech deaf and with the importance of sign language in this teaching process. There is described a process of language acquisition (for hearing and deaf children) and there is also described the difference between acquiring the first language and learning a second / foreign language. The work also denotes the causes of low literacy of Czech deaf and the possibility of solving this problem. Only a major change in the way of teaching Czech language can be the solution. Czech is a second language for Czech deaf and if we want it to be taught effectively, it must be taught in the contrast with the Czech sign language. The internet television for the Deaf children and youth - WEBlik

RESUME The aim of this thesis is to describe one of the media primarily designed for the Deaf users. Website WEBlik - Internet TV offers broadcasting for the Deaf children and youth. It also deals with perception of WEBlik TV. Part of the thesis is a conclusion of a research with a specificgoal to findouthowthe Czech Deaf perceive the reports published at WEBlik TV: videorecordings, short videos, reports from artistic performances and other broadcasted news and reports. The content of the website - WEBlik TV - is presented mostly in the Czech Sign Language, which is the primary language of the Czech Deaf community. Some of the reports are occasionally published in other national Sign Language or in International Sign System. All videos in Sign Languages or in International Sign Systém are provided with a summary of their content in written Czech, in order to make the content of the WEBlik website accesible to the widest range of viewers. These short summaries cannot be called Czech subtitles, becausethey are not directly on the screen, it is morelike a transcription of them essage into Czech language. The function/ (and) comprehensibility of written Czech in the intracultural communication of the deaf

This Bachelor Thesis deals with the topic of written Czech language in the interactive communication of the Deaf. The theoretical part comprises chapters about the general specifics of the Deaf community, their characteristic communication features (intercultural, but primarily intra-cultural), the specifics of their written language and of their reading skills. Furthermore, the theoretical part covers topics such as interference from mother/first tongue and translation theory, as these are closely connected with inter- and intra-cultural communication of the Deaf. The practical part explores research on intra-cultural communication. Specifically, by exploring the question if Czech texts written by the Deaf have a function in intra-cultural communication of this language minority, and if they are comprehensible for the readers. The initial hypothesis is that the Deaf understand defective texts created by Deaf themselves better than grammatically correct texts written by Czech native speakers. The Monuments of Prague in the Czech Deaf Culture and their Names in the Czech Sign Language

In this thesis I am focusing on geographical proper names, namely twenty Prague historical monuments. With those I am not only trying to determine whether they are known to the Czech Deaf culture, but also whether there are signs for them in the Czech Sign Language. In the first part I define propria (proper name), I describe how proper names are formed, how they function and how they can be categorized. Then I focus on the research, in which I first explain my approach and the way I recorded the acquired material. The most extensive section of the thesis is devoted to descriptions of signs of individual monuments, which I obtained during my research of the recordings with the Deaf respondents. The penultimate chapter is devoted to analyzing the results and additional information that I obtained as a verification of the obtained material by a Deaf linguist. The conclusion states what is clear from the results of analysis. The Czech Deaf culture does name the selected historical monuments just as the hearing culture does. Most signs of Czech Sign Language are passed down from generation to generation.
Sign Writing

This bachelor's thesis examines the SignWriting notation system and its application for Czech Sign Language. SignWriting is a notation system that allows for graphical representation of sign languages. Due to the simultaneous articulation in the manual-visual modality of sign languages, sign language notation systems are very different from those used for spoken (audio-oral) languages. Sign languages contain manual and non-manual elements all of which can be represented in SignWriting using pictorial (iconic) symbols. The introductory chapters of this thesis describe the origins and progressive transformation of SignWriting, its basic principles and the method of individual symbol formation. Further, the thesis introduces specific symbols used for the manual components of signs - place of articulation, handshape, movement and body contact, non-manual components of signs - body movement and position, facial expressions and mouthing, and the use of punctuation symbols. The last chapter discusses the use of SignWriting in the Czech Republic and worldwide.
Interrogative expressions in Czech Sign Language

Anotation The bachelor's thesis focuses on the useage of interrogative expressions in Czech sign language. It provides an overview of the interrogative expressions excerpted from Czech sign language dictionaries and of a video, which was made in the context of research into the use and misuse of expressions that were excerpted from dictionaries. In addition, the thesis deals with the construction of the interrogative sentences in Czech language and other foreign sign languages. Part of the thesis is a DVD which captures examples of interrogative sentences in Czech sign language as performed by deaf respondents of a survey who use Czech sign language.
Minimal pairs in Czech sign language

This thesis research focuses on the minimal pairs in the Czech sign language, in which segment a distinctive position may be filled by any parameter character (hand shape, place of articulation, movement, palm orientation, the orientation of the fingers, hands arrangement, and contact). The main part of this work is a one-handed and two-hand analysis of characters in which the hand / hands in the shape of the hand and closed, respectively in the shape of A, A0, A roof, sA and tA. The analyzed material was obtained from the Czech elicitation deaf native Czech sign language, and several excerption Czech sign language dictionaries. The main attention is concentrated on a detailed description of the manual components of signs and indication of possible semantic relationships between the characters figures in minimal pairs. In conclusion, the analytical part is an overview of phonemes found, possible variants of phonemes and frequency representation of character types and shapes of the hand / hands, places of articulation and places of contacts. The adaptations of belletristic texts for deaf children

Thesis deals with tbe theme of adaptation of belletristic literary texts for hear impaired readers. In theoretic part it sums up actua1 knowledge about reading of deaf and infers from them the conclusion for working with printed texts in deaf classes. Thesis concems with actual approaches and used processes in creating adapted texts in our background. This knowledge is completed by new approaches and methods common used in abroad, first at all in language classes of non-native speakers. Practical part is focused on selected adapted texts for hearing impaired readers. These texts are analyzed if they meet adaptation's criteria requirements. At the close thesis sums up difficulties in actual approach to text adaptation and suggest their elimination. Headwords:
Personal pronouns in written czech of the deaf

The bachelor's thesis is dealing with the problematic of personal pronouns in written Czech language of the Czech deaf. In the theoretical part of the thesis the personal pronouns in Czech, Czech Sign Language and other sign languages are described. There are also mentioned the differences in functioning of personal pronouns in Czech language and Czech sign language. Next part of the thesis is focused on the description of the textbooks of Czech language for deaf and for foreigners learning Czech in the field of personal pronouns. In the research 33 respondents - the students of the secondary school and the university - were engaged. The usage of personal pronouns was examined by means of the questionaries given to the respondents. The questionary had three parts - a translation of the sentences from Czech Sign Language to Czech, grammatical exercises and a short essay. The acquired data were analysed; the mistakes in the usage of pronouns were described and the possible connections between the types of the mistakes in written Czech and the mode of functioning of the sign language were introduced. Finally a concept of the methodics for acquisition of personal pronouns by deaf is suggested.
