Post-war history of Roms in Czechoslovakia in the Eye-Witness Perspective: Possibilities of Reconstruction of Post-War Migration of a Selected Group of Roms from Slovakia into the Czech Lands

This thesis is concentrated on the topic of the post-war migration of Roms from Slovakia to the Czech Lands as the crucial process in the post-war history of Roms on the territory of former Czechoslovakia which had its effects not only on individual groups of Roms living in Slovakia and migrating to the Czech Lands, but also on the next developments in the relations of the Czech majority society towards the Roms and changes in the approach to them on the side of central state institutions. The thesis offers a presentation of a complex historic case study of post-war migration of a particular local group of Roms from south- eastern Slovakia to the city of Brno (Moravia), based on a synthetic research method combining both oral history and written sources of mostly regional provenience. The author has applied the method in two different contexts: while reconstructing the developments in the situation of the group of Roms and their relations with the majority society in Slovakia during 1920' to 1970's, and while mapping the post-war migration of part of these people in relation to two localities in the Czech Lands, with one representing a transit locality of their early post-war migration and the other their final destination where this group of Roms lives still today. This thesis entitled‚ Kopřivnice in the process of political changes in 1989/1990' consists of a description and analysis of events connected to the disintegration of the post-totalitarian authoritarian regime in Czechoslovakia and deals with the transition to democracy of the medium-sized North Moravian town, Kopřivnice. My aim is to record not only the course of political changes, but also social and economic development after 17 November 1989. In terms of time, the thesis covers the period from 1986 to the municipal election in November 1990. The first chapter describes the oral history method, its position in the modern science and in the practical part of this thesis. The second chapter deals with the characteristics of the post-totalitarian authoritarian regime in Czechoslovakia before 1989 and the pre-existing conditions for the subsequent changes which took place in Czechoslovakia and Czech society. The third chapter analyses the field of the Velvet Revolution in revolution theory terms. The thesis concerns the topic of formation of civic aktivity in Pilsen area before and after the year 1989 within the frame of so called protest culture. The goal of the thesis is the interpretation and analysis of life-stories of narrators, who participated in the period of normalization and transformation of cultural and political life in Pilsen, on basic of oral-historical investigation. This work focuses on life of each of the narrators as well on concrete course of revolution in Pilsen. Prague ballet scene and its main leaders of the 2nd half of the 20th century.

This diploma thesis deals with the Prague ballet scene and its important representatives during the second half of the 20th century. The study aims to provide a concise summary of a topic that has not been covered so far and holds great potential for further research. The effort is to capture life stories of several eminent personalities of the ballet scene in the area of dance, choreography and teaching. In addition, the author maps events which had a significant impact on the ballet scene both in terms of theatrical and historical milestones. The chosen problems are approached by using theme-oriented literature reviews and processing of archival documents. The method of oral history is used as part of the research. The contribution of this thesis lies in its concise mapping of the Prague ballet scene and the profession of a ballet artist with all its possible pros and cons. Most importantly, it also serves as commemoration of personalities who had an unforgettable influence on the history of this art form.
Czechoslovak Beat Festivals (1967, 1968 and 1971) Under the Influence of British and American Musical Models

This thesis deals with Czechoslovak Beat Festivals which were held in the years 1967, 1968 and 1971. The work presents a musical atmosphere which prevailed in Czechoslovakia in the days of their birth and depicts the conditions in which our musicians built their first bands and started with their own music production. Emphasis is placed on Western musical models whose influence on Czechoslovak artists and authors is undeniable. The paper is processed using oral history on the basis of which interviews with co- organizers, journalists, musicians and spectators were recorded. Their findings and impressions are integrated into the information drawn from historical materials and literature. Therefore, they serve as a supplement to known information and bring a new and sometimes unexpected view of events nearly fifty years ago. This diploma thesis is attempting to analyze the events of November and December 1989 in Czechoslovakia through the eyes of English-speaking witnesses, both at the time and in retrospect, using English language sources. The goal of the thesis is to distill from the analysis notions of freedom and whether there are perceptions of change since 1989. Included in the definition of "freedom" is the means by which it was achieved.

Abstract in English language This work depicts the life story story of a "self-made man" Jaroslav Salda, the creator and director of the Melantrich, the biggest printing company in Czechoslovak time of so called First Republic. It is doing so by compiling interviews with period witnesses, archival documents and literary sources. Each chapter is a part of the answer to the question: How is it possible that the illegitimate child without funds and university education had become the man with extensive expertise, the frequent guest of Ministers and the President and the powerful head of the media industry? This text as a whole, firmly tied to the history of the Czech nation and Melantrich, reflects the experience of the man who dedicated his life to building, because he considered the constructive, innovative, diligent and hard work the main means of fulfillment in life and the key to success. It shows a person which embodies the adage: Where there is a will, there is a way. This thesis "The Tatra company in the period of so-called normalization through eyes of its employees and residents of Kolín", concerning of state privatized enterprise in Kolín. This thesis examines the views and daily life of the employees of the company and residents of Kolín. The work provides an overview of the history and development of the company Tatra. Represents district Kolín and focuses primarily on the description in the period of. Normalization, which touched city, business, residents but also the whole of Czechoslovakia. The thesis is based mainly on archival materials, historical periodicals and interviews, which were conducted by the method oral history with contemporary witnesses. It connects the working environment, personal lives, leisure activities, social culture of the city and residents who were part of a large company and history of the city of Kolín. At the same time, the work seeks to highlight the positives and negatives period of so-called normalization and current relationship of people to the place where they lived more or less part of their lives.
Women's Role in the History of Czech Punk

Diplomová práce zkoumá roli žen v historii českého punku. V úvodní části práce je popsána historie a vývoj punku ve světě. V této části jsou vysvětleny významy pojmu punk jako subkultura (v terminologii pozdějších výzkumů scéna) a punk jako hudební žánr. Popsána jsou specifika ženské punkové módy a stylu. Jsou uvedeny role, ve kterých se ženy v punkové scéně realizují a typické ženské role v hudebních skupinách. Součástí teoretické části práce je stručný popis historie punku na území České republiky a zapojení žen v české punkové scéně. Jako jeden z hlavních zdrojů při vypracování diplomové práce byly využity rozhovory vedené metodou odvozenou od metodologie orální historie. Dílčím cílem práce bylo ověření použitelnosti analytického programu Atlas.ti pro analýzu orálně-historických interview. Tento software byl využit pro analýzu výzkumných rozhovorů. Druhá polovina práce se zabývá interpretací témat obsažených v rozhovorech. Věnuje se specifickým oblastem života v souvislosti s punkovou subkulturou jako jsou důvody, které přivedly ženy k punku, role přátel a vztahů, setkání punkového myšlení s autoritou v podobě rodičů a školy. "Friendship cannot be forbidden" - Independent activities of the Catholic youth in the 80s as remembered by their participants

The presented thesis is a probe into the environment of young and spiritually oriented people who engaged in half-illegal and illegal extracurricular activities within the hidden church life during their adolescence in the 1980s. The research based mostly on the oral history method and exploration of archives shows what possibilities there were for living faith in a community of religious people in this period, who and for what reason showed interest in these activities, what limits restricted such an activity, and what were the benefits of participating in these activities for the personal, spiritual and professional life of the individuals. Primarily, the thesis deals with the chaloupky of Salesians, the camp Radost, the Příchovice Parish community, and scout groups. Through the records of this activity, which was outlawed by the Communist regime, kept by the State Security, the issue has also been looked at from the viewpoint of the official power.
