Analysis of infuence of given factors on the price of black coal
Švec, Daniel ; Zajíček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the relationship of the price of thermal coal and chosen variables on the European market. It describes principles of business with coal on both local and international basis and summarizes pricing of thermal coal. It examines the connection of the price of thermal coal with the price of its closest substitutes. Using regression analysis it determines variables that have the biggest impact on the price. It is shown, that in the long run, the price of thermal coal follows the pattern of its substitutes, energy commodities. With an increase of natural gas price by one dollar, the price of thermal coal increases by 0,275 dollars. An increase of crude oil price by one dollar increases the price of coal by 0,155 dollars. The most significant impact on the price has variable representing the transport costs required to transport coal. With an increase of one dollar of transport costs, the price of thermal coal on European market increases by 1,279 dollars.
Determinants of growth of European SMEs
Pastva, Richard ; Babin, Jan (advisor) ; Kadeřábková, Božena (referee)
The subject of this thesis is an analysis of factors influencing the growth rate of small and medium enterprises in Europe. The required data was collected from Amadeus database and processed into a panel dataset. Afterwards, the regression parameters of the selected explanatory variables were obtained by means of fixed effects models. Results showed that enterprise growth rate was most significantly influenced by the rate of R&D costs, specifically its annual change in relation to turnover. Growth is also positively influenced by firm's profitability, annual change in intangible assets value and nation's growth rate of GDP. A negative effect on growth connected with solvency ratio was also found, which is consistent with a proposition of the pecking order theory. Once again, validity of Gibrat's Law was confirmed when size variable turned out to be statistically insignificant and slightly negative in addition. Not surprisingly, privately held companies operating in Western Europe showed a bit higher propensity to faster growth than their counterparts.
Prediction of student performance at Faculty of Economics, University of Economics
Adamcová, Lucie ; Hronza, Martin (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The main task of this thesis is to test the quality of Scio's General Academic Prerequisites (OSP) test as entrance exam to Faculty of Economics, University of Economics. Besides that the thesis finds and tests other determinants and predictors of students' success on the faculty. The main hypothesis states: the relationship of results of OSP with success of student on faculty is positive eventually nonexistent and so it does not fulfill the criterion of high-quality entrance exam. The thesis assumes inefficiency of public school system thanks to absence of market signals. The thesis refutes this hypothesis based on regression and correlation analysis of sample of 225 students of the faculty. Using this dataset the thesis tests various variables and their prediction ability of students' success. Maturity's exam proved to be the best of those variables.
Analysis of households consumption in Czech Republic
Matějů, Tereza ; Kloudová, Dana (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
Abstract This Bachelor's thesis is focused on analysis of households consumption between 1995 -- 2013 and aim of this work is to expose relation between households consumption and gross domestic product. The Author uses database of Czech Statistical Office and reveals that households consumption is the most significant part of expenditures on final consumption and gross domestic product. Households consumption is also very stable part of gross domestic product and therefore households consumption shows small fluctuations during defined period. The amount of funds has mostly increasing progress.
Who Was Better? Vettel or Schumacher?
Rusnoková, Lenka ; Melzochová, Jitka (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
Is Michael Schumacher really the best Formula 1 driver? Are not his outstanding succeses only result of qualities of his racing car? Is there anyone better among Formula 1 drivers? During my research, I apply miscellaneous methods of talent evaluation to dataset of the chosen drivers racing between years 1980 and 2013. The method of explicit talent expression by means of the multiple regression model using fixed effects is one of them. The methodology is based on separation of driver's influence and racing car's effect on the total result of a race recorded by statistics. According to my research, Michael Schumacher is statistically the best driver of my selection, however, Fernando Alonso is the most talented one. Thanks to a posibility to express driver's talent, the efficiency at the labour market of racing drivers rises, which is caused by reduction of costs of the best driver selection for the needs of the team.
Attendance analysis of HC Sparta Praha
Jankovič, Velimír ; Melzochová, Jitka (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
In bachelor thesis I investigate seasonal match attendance of HC Sparta Praha ice-hockey team in seasons 2002/2003 to 2012/2013 and the individual match attendance in seasons 2008/2009 to 2012/2013. The acquired data were processed by regression analysis and the effects of attendance determinants were quantified using OLS-method (ordinary least squares). The team rivalry and the prestigious players' appearance in match belong to the most significant factors. By derby-matches the attendance increased by almost 59%. On the other hand, there has not been found any coherency between the attendance and ticket price -- which gives to the Sparta's management a very good range for maneuvering regarding pricing policy.
Analysis of determinants affecting consumer movie ratings
Plevák, Tomáš ; Svoboda, Miroslav (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This paper aims to analyze influence of selected factors, based on 2012 year's data, such as genre, budget, reviews, length, etc., on final consumer rating of the film. The analysis is conducted with the assistance of an econometric model, using the least squares method with automatic correction of heteroscedasticity and results are applicable mainly to the population of viewers from the United States. I found out that rating of the film is mostly influenced by the genre classification. It turned out that another important vatiable is the one based on professional critics reviews, however it cannot be said whether the critic is affecting consumer by his evaluation or he is only predicting success of the film. Most of the papers dealing with this topic focuses on sales, this paper on the other hand is focused on the preferences of the viewer as a consumer.
Determinants of demand for the Jihlava Zoo services
Nacházel, Jan ; Rotschedl, Jiří (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is to discover, which factors specify the demand for the Jihlava ZOO services, and recommend steps to raise attendance and revenues of the zoo. The time series with 2557 observations, which come from the period between 2007 and 2013, were used in the thesis. These data were used for econometric analysis, which was conducted with the ordinary least square method with robust standard errors against heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. Most variables, which were included into the econometric model, proved themselves to be statistically significant. The attendance is positively influenced by bank holidays and weekends. Ticket price and petrol price do not play a significant role in visitors' decision making.
Analysis of the impact of economic variables on the timber price
Vaněk, Petr ; Chytilová, Helena (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the association between the average timber price and selected economic variables. It describes the main topics of timber-trade and its price development. It examines the impact of inflation on the real value of timber and the changes in its average price. Using regression analysis it determines the variables that affect the average price. It also analyses how the rate of various product lines impacts the average price of timber. It turns out that the real price of wood is decreasing in the long-term perspective. There is a significant increase on price of firewood. The most significant impact on the price is caused by the ratio of exports to the total amount of timber. With increase of one percentage point, the average price increases of 19.56 CZK per m3.
Price Elasticity of Demand for Life Insurance
Marešová, Vanda ; Lahvička, Jiří (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The main goal of this research is to find out the price elasticity of demand for life insurance in Czech Republic. It was utilized exogenous price change for research caused by EU regulation of premium rate unification for men and women, put into force on 21.12.2012. In research were used data from 2010 to 2013 about sales and prices of life insurance products, provided by Czech Business Insurance Company. It was discovered that women's demand for life insurance is inelastic, price increase of 1% brings reduction of demanded quantity of 0,94%. Price elasticity of a men's demand came out as a plus number. It was caused by sudden decline of demanded quantity after price reduction. This phenomenon might be a topic for further research.
