The Brazilian Agrarian-industrial Towns of Jan Antonín Baťa (1940 - 1965): Bata Shoe Company's Ideal Industrial Town as Transnational Crossings of Urban Planning Ideas
Costa da Silva, Davi ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Sonkoly, Gábor (referee) ; Jemelka, Martin (referee)
This master thesis deals with the towns that were established by the Czech entrepreneur Jan Antonín Baťa in Brazil between 1941 and 1965: Batatuba, Vila CIMA - Indiana, Mariápolis, Bataguassu and Batayporã. The phenomenon of the Brazilian Baťa towns is analysed through lenses of the histoire croisée approach in order to show these cities as a result of the interaction between several urban planning concepts, Brazilian political and economic contexts, and Jan A. Baťa 's own plans and intentions. To do so, I analyze several projects and relevant supporting documentation about the Bata Shoe Company's ideal industrial town as well as the cities established by Jan Antonín Baťa in Brazil. Therefore, the Brazilian Bata towns are presented as a special chapter of a transnational history of the company towns established by the Baťa Shoe Company in different areas of the world. Primary sources indicate that Jan Antonín Baťa wanted to create mixed agrarian-industrial settlements in which families would be able to work on factories and farms at the same time, creating a new urban model that I am calling the "Bata Agrarian-industrial town". Keywords: Brazilian Bata towns, Jan Antonín Baťa, Agrarian-industrial town, transnational urban studies

The thesis presents the development and changes of the Norwegian written standard in the United States during the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The research is based on the material from the newspapers published by the Norwegian immigrant community in the United States. For the purpose of the analyses, three leading Norwegian written newspapers (Decorah-Posten, Skandinaven, Minneapolis Tidende; commonly known as The Big Three) were selected. The development of Norwegian is documented from the perspective of language management and its theory. The first part of the analyses deals with the influence of English as the dominant language of the area on the written Norwegian. Morphological and orthographic integration of English loanwords as well as the most affected fields of the immigrants' lexicon are discussed in this part. The second view monitors the impact of the spelling reform codified in 1907 in Norway on the written standard of the immigrants in the United States and its extent. Features such as voiced/voiceless occlusives, plural and preterite forms, use of double consonants and font are studied in the newspaper material. The individual research points give a general view on the topic of the written Norwegian as used by the immigrants in their press....

Illegal Hispanic Migration to the USA
Minčičová, Petra ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Buben, Radek (referee)
There are approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States of America presently. Mexicans are the largest group; however they are followed by immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador (GHS), a region known as the Northern Triangle. Current immigration from the region of GHS prevails. One of the reasons is an ongoing 2014 American immigration crisis, related to the migration of unaccompanied minor's. The Northern Triangle is considered to be one of the poorest in the region, with the high levels of crime and murder rates, which is likely to be caused by numerous street gangs and drug cartels. The first wave of migration was caused by civil wars in Guatemala and El Salvador in the eighties. There was another wave after 1998 caused by several natural disasters which swept through the region. The newcomers widened the numbers of undocumented immigrants in the USA. President Trump plans to deport most of the undocumented immigrants and he wants to prevent other migrants from coming with the construction of the border wall with Mexico. The immigrants live in the USA ten years or longer on average, some of them have families and kids who are American citizens. In contrast to the decision of the previous administration, they would not avoid the deportation. The current...
Image of Spain and Portugal in English written travelogues in 1750'
Branda, Martin ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Černá, Jana (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
in English The master thesis is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of English written travelogues of the second half of the 18th century, which described Spain and Portugal. I work with two original texts and one translation from Italian, all the texts which were popular among their readers. The main goal of the thesis is to create the complex image of both respective countries and their inhabitants, based on the analysis of travelogues. During the analysis, I use the concept of stereotype as defined by Walther Lippmann. I also use so-called Black Legend, the negative view of the Iberian Peninsula originating in the 16th century. At the same time, the aim of the thesis is to compare the images in all works and come to more general conclusions about English perception of Spain and Portugal. Keywords: Spain, Portugal, travelogues, image of the Other, Black Legend, Southey, Baretti, Young
Native Handicraft Textile Production in Oaxaca
Melicharová, Tereza ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Brenišínová, Monika (referee)
This thesis is a case study about three textile cooperatives made up of women from three indigenous ethnic groups in the Mexican state of Oaxaca: Galvain Cuy (Zapotecs, Teotitlán del Valle community), Jiñi Ñuu (Mixtecs, San Juan Colorado community) and Kee Nshií (Chatino people, Santiago Yaitepec community). Together with other Oaxaca handcraft cooperatives, these are connected with the community firm Color y Cultura, which looks after the sales and promotion of their products. This paper maps the cooperative work of the indigenous women who are involved in handcrafted textile production in the above-mentioned three communities, and how the umbrella firm Color y Cultura residing in Oaxaca de Juárez operates. It examines how these women perceive the cooperative business model and the Color y Cultura community firm, which they are connected with, as well as the advantages and weaknesses of this model of a work organisation. It also treats their ethnic self- perception in relation to their actual handcraft work and the promotion thereof. The membership in Color y Cultura makes it possible for the women in the cooperatives studied to avoid dealing with a middleman thanks to its brick and mortar shop in Oaxaca. This brings them a higher profit, creative freedom and direct contact with the customer....

Tepito and its transformation since 1960 to the present. The present forms of the culture of poverty
Omastová, Kristýna ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee)
In this thesis I describe the transformation process of Tepito, the "brave neighbourhood" in Mexico City, from 1960 to the present day. In this microhistory, I intend to explore how the great socio-economic changes, that have occurred in Mexico in the last 60 years, have been reflected locally. I especially focus on the incorporation of the traditional Mexican society into the modern and globalized world; The process of corporatization of the popular sector into the politics of the single party; The transition from the stabilizing development economic model (characterized by the Import substitution industrialization) to neoliberalism; The gradual rupture of the social fabric hastened by the urban planning in the 60s and 70s, the 1985 earthquake and the proliferation of drug trafficking and armed violence; And the beginning of the digital era. I also try to explore the validity of the Culture of Poverty theory which was formulated by the anthropologist Oscar Lewis during his field research in Tepito in the late 50's of the last century and I describe which of the aspects of the theory have changed.
Diverging Migratory Tendencies of the Youth in Central Europe - Case Studies of the Hungarian and Czech Models
Abdel-Salam, Nóra ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Verdier, Nicolas (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The political and economic changes of the past three decades exercised varying effects on the lives and prospects of young people in Hungary and the Czech Republic. The destructive outcomes of the countries' struggle with the hardships of the global economic crisis pushed many of them to leave their countries and try their chances elsewhere over the past few years. Even though, the prevalent migratory fluxes of Europe may generally be characterized by the Westward movement of a group composed of predominantly young Central and Eastern European men and women, my two countries of research display diverging migratory tendencies. While today's Hungary advocates the threat of emerging as a country of emigration, the Czech Republic's population inflow outrules its emigration, making it gradually turn into a country of immigration. In my research, I wish to reveal the specificities of Hungarian and Czech migratory tendencies and their underlying social and economic reasons. Ultimately, my aim is to provide an understanding of the evolution of current migration tendencies in Hungary and in the Czech Republic, as well as their potential long term effects on the two countries' social and economic structure. KEY WORDS Emigration, immigration, youth, unemployment, poverty, education, work, European Union, free...
