Slovak-Italian relationships 1939-1945

Slovak-ltalian relationsbips between 1939 and 1945 Diplomatic relations between the fírst Slovak Republic and the Kingdom oOtaly began developing after Apri1 11, 1939, when tbe ltalian govemment acknowledged the independence of Slovakia. The first Slovak ambassador, 1M. Zvrškovec, served in Rome from the middle of May 1939 and was replaced in summer 1940 by B. Galvánek. The Italian consulate in Bratislava directed by F.Lo Faro was transformed Ínto an embassy in September 1939. Count G.Roncalli, the first ambassador, was succeeded by P. Cortese in March 1942. ln tbe years ]939 to 1943 tbe Slovak-ltalian relationships were very active and rapídly extended in many fields of diplomacy, business, culture, propaganda and sports. These activities are described in detail in several chapters. This period of contacts was very fruitful, but compilation of a cultural agreement was not fina1ized and the planned visits at tbe highest level never took place. Tbe above communication abruptly came to an end after the· ltalian miIitary and politica1 break down in summer of 1943. The Ivan Markovič's personality and his work in the context of the first Czechoslovak Republic

The presented doctoral thesis deals with the hitherto neglected personality of the Slovak politician Ivan Markovič (1888-1944). The aim of the thesis is to clarify the political activity of Ivan Markovič, to analyze his ideological anchoring and to increase the overall awareness of his person in the context of Czecho-Slovak relations in the first half of the 20th century. The thesis is divided into four chapters and an epilogue, while the individual chapters are devoted to the study of various time and thematic contexts in which Markovič was active. The first chapter introduces the research into the broader context of Czecho-Slovak relations and the background of the first years of Markovič's life. The second chapter examines his work as the founder and editor of the magazine Prúdy in the period before the outbreak of the First World War. The third chapter deals with his activities in the resistance movement abroad during the war. Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the activities of Markovič in the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Worker's Party and his involvement in the top politics of the interwar Czechoslovak Republic. The phenomenon of Czechoslovak hitchhiking in the 1960s

The bachelor's thesis deals with the phenomenon of Czechoslovak hitchhiking in the 1960s. It presents it as a contemporary global phenomenon, focusing on its "Czech version". In the work, the author tries to answer questions about what was its character, actors, forms, problems and what conditions enabled its mass development in this period. At the same time, the question of the position of young people as the main actors of hitchhiking and its relationship to the Czechoslovak Youth Union is presented in more detail. Based on the example of an unsuccessful event of organized hitchhiking, the work presents the shortcomings of this organization. The text is divided into eight main chapters. First, the definition of the term hitchhiking is introduced. Subsequently, hitchhiking is set in a contemporary context. The next chapter deals with the topic of 1960s media, which was the main source for the work. The following is a description of the course of hitchhiking and its various forms, which are arranged according to the motivation for this way of traveling. A separate part is also devoted to organized hitchhiking, the causes that led to it, the course and its failed end. Political Vison of Václav Havel During His Czechoslovak Presidency, 1990-92

This bachelor thesis explores opinions of Václav Havel on Czech-Slovak question inside of the Common state. It analyses to his views on important international questions and issues of integration of Czechoslovakia inside Europe and eventually his views on the course of economic transformation in the period 1990-92. The goal of this thesis is to outline the political vision of Václav Havel for the above issues through scholarly publications, but especially via his own texts and speeches and the periodical radio broadcast Hovory v Lánech. The Czech-Slovak question proved to be one of the most important for functioning of Common state. This question occupied Havel's attention in domestic politics and its unsuccessful solution finally became the reason for his abdication as president. The fame of the first post - communist president in international scene was indeed unexpected and the international relationships were Havel's domain, in which many of his visions became reality. Economic transformation was an important aspect in the transition of Czechoslovakia to a democratic system with a market economy and as such Havel could not forget to reflect it.
Action "K" in its Consequences at the Example of Society of Jesus

(anglicky) The bachelor thesis deals with the attack against the male religious orders - Action "K" with its consequences on the example of The Society of Jesus in the Czech lands in the period between 1948 and 1968. The thesis is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter is focused on The Society of Jesus where the religious order is introduced and its history until 1948 outlined. The second chapter covers the church-political situation in the years between 1948 and 1950, which foreshadowed the Action "K". The third chapter covers the Action "K" and its implementation. The fourth chapter provides an analysis of the life in the centralizing monasteries, the fates of the religious in the Technical Auxiliary battalions, the retraining centers and the charity house. The fifth chapter focuses on the monks in the internment monastery in Želiv. The sixth chapter is concentrated on the changes of the church politics of the state after the Action "K" until 1956. Czech Radio Broadcasting for Youth in the Period of "Normalization"

This bachelor thesis is exploring the form of Czech broadcasting for children and youth within the Czechoslovak Radio in the Period of "Normalization". At that time, the ideology of the regime had to be present in some way in almost all broadcasts. Therefore, the main goal of this thesis is to find out in more detail how was the ideology present in children's and youth radio production and whether, despite the ideology, interesting and valuable broadcasts could have been created, even outside the artistic program. Via scholarly publications, various articles, as well as written and audio sources from the archives of the Czech Radio, the author describes the personnel situation and the organization in the Main Editorial Office for Children and Youth. She describes the broadcasting itself and its ideological and educational subtext, even through examples of special programs for political anniversaries and events. The attention is also paid to exceptional and valuable educational radio events for pupils of the primary school. Planning and Building of Jižní Město

(in English): This bachelor thesis describes the planning and building of Jižní Město (South City), the biggest Czech housing panel estate. This Prague housing estate set was complexly projected as a self- sufficient city which would provide its inhabitants besides various types of housing also job opportunities, all civic amenities, recreation or cultural activities. This work aims to analyse these ambitious plans and illustrate the then ideas of ideal housing, city and place to live, based on the Jižní Město project. Then the text of the thesis tries to compare and confront the original ideas of Jižní Město with their realized form and thus show in which compromises the initial ideals materialized. Furthermore, the work describes what the implementation of plans in practice encountered, how the construction took place, by what it was affected and why there were changes compared to the plans of architects. Based on this, the work tries to clarify which actors participated in the planning and building and who decided on the realization or non- realization of architectural plans.
Frontier Guard and the Liquidation of Villages in the Bohemian Forest in the 1950's

The presented bachelor thesis Frontier Guard and the Liquidation of Villages in the Bohemian Forest in the 1950's deals with the various methods of liquidation of abandoned villages in the Bohemian Forest region in the 1950's. The introduction of the thesis contains, in particular, a basic definition of the topic, objectives, literature and archival sources used, and the state of research to date. In the following chapters, the bachelor thesis focuses on the course of the liquidation of the villages, its cause and method. Furthermore, it discusses the guarding of the state borders of the Czechoslovak Republic by means of the iron curtain and the Frontier Guard, and the establishment of the border regime by establishing a prohibited and border zone. The work also deals with the liquidation of the villages absorbed by the Dobrá Voda military district. In the final chapters, it deals with specific examples of the liquidation of the villages Bučina, Knížecí Pláně, Stodůlky and Hůrka, villages that were liquidated due to the establishment of the prohibited and border zone and the military district.
Religious Life in Czechoslovak Prisons in the Period of the Communist Regime

This thesis deals with Czechoslovak penal system between the years 1948 - 1989 from the view of religion. It investigates the developement of spiritual service in prison, follows its decline after February 1948 and describes in which way the prisoners tried to find a solution to the prohibiton to practice religion in prisons. Further it focuses on religious persecution in communist Czechoslovakia, presents reasons for imprisonment of the members of individual confessions and shows how their faith reflected in everyday life in prison. The author makes a reference to the concentration of priests in closed departements, explains its reason and tries to depict everyday life of these separated communities. He describes in details how the convicted practiced the acts of their religion and he deals with the differences of individual confessions. The work speculates over the sense of imprisonment of hundreds of priests, friars and laymen from some of the Churches in communist Czechoslovakia. It thinks about the power of faith and conviction exposed to cruel physical treatment and mental violence. Czechs and Germans in the Polička's Region in the 20th Century: Regional Probe Into Czech-German Coexistence in the Ethnically Mixed District of Polička

Using a method of regional probing, the thesis seeks to map the evolution of relations between the Czech majority and the German minority that resided in the former political district of Policka. The analysis concentrates on the period of 1897-1946, with a concentration focusing on the culture of remembering and the ways in which both ethnic groups came to divergent interpretations of their mutually-shared history. The author strives to identify the factors that influneced the actions and positions of the local populace during the key political events of 1918, 1938 and 1945. He concentrates not only on the everday interactions between both ethnic groups, but also on the conditions that both groups found themelves in during the so-called national confrontation.
