Hamplová, Martina ; Pešek, Jiří (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
The rigorous thesis "Migration waves in the Federal Republic of Germany between northern and southern states post 1989" deals with internal migration and focuses on the citizens of Germany and their movement within the country after 1989. The main area of focus is the depopulation of the northern part of Germany and the related 4 immigration of specific migration groups to one of both southern German states. This rigorous thesis surveys the migration streams in this territory for the period between 1990 and 2008 and analyzes their influence on the demographic changes and transformations of the local socio- economic structure. In the theoretical section, the appropriate basic terms relating to the area of migration research are explained. A concrete survey of migration streams between northern and southern Gemany is introduced in two case studies. The first deals with the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Using this example, the problems of depopulation in the north of Germany are discussed. Whilst considering the importance of these problems, the consequences of migration for this state and the attitude of the local policy surrounding this issue are described. Representative of the southern part of Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg is introduced whose population has been growing...
Immigration and City: Integration Policies in Berlin and Vienna 1971-2011
Dimitrov, Michal ; Pešek, Jiří (advisor) ; Klípa, Ondřej (referee) ; Zimmermann, Volker (referee)
The doctoral thesis compares and interprets the development of local integration policies of (West) Berlin and Vienna in 1971-2011 on the background of the transformation of Germany and Austria from ethnically homogenous to multicultural countries. Both metropolises first balanced between refusing the permanent integration of immigrants ("temporary integration") and selection of foreigners suitable for integration, later searched for a balance between the traditional concept of assimilation and the more modern multicultural approach; in the last decade they favoured the diversity policy, in more or less close connection to the concept of interculturalism. Although both cities represent essentially similar cases, this development was not straightforward and simultaneous, especially in the first phase before the migration crisis at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The research study focuses mainly on two questions: why the development of local integration policy in West Berlin started significantly earlier than in Vienna and why both cities started to support diversity policy at the beginning of the new century. The comparative framework derived from the "contrast of contexts" method interprets the development of local integration policies in the context of the national and transnational political...
Tar sands exploitation in the Alberta Province, Canada and its environmental impact
Šídová, Kateřina ; Opluštil, Stanislav (advisor) ; Pešek, Jiří (referee)
This thesis provides an overview about the tar sands exploitation in the province of Alberta, Canada and environmental impacts related to their exploitation. Canadian's tar sands deposits represent the 3rd largest crude oil reserve in the world. The economically recoverable reserves were estimated to 168, 7 billion barrels. The introductory part of the thesis explains process of oil formation, including a theory about the tar sands deposits formation. The main part of the thesis describes four most significant tar sands deposits in the Alberta province which differ in physical-chemical properties of extracted crude oil (eg. specific gravity) but also in geology of their deposits. Differences in geological setting require individual approach to extraction of particular deposits. The most common exploitation methods are described. Among them, the surface mining results are the most apparent exploitation impact on a landscape and therefore the major environmental problems are presented through it.

Catholic Reformation in the Prague Towns after the Battle of White Mountain. Prague's New Town in a context of the process of the catholic confessionalisation Abstract Olga Fejtová This thesis' methodological ground is a conception of both clerical and secular politics of recatholisation in a relation to Prague's New Town within the Post-White-Mountain period as part of a process of confessionalisation, i. e catholic confessialisation, within the paradigm that was introduced into European historiography in 1980s . The recatholisation within Bohemian lands in relationship to the paradigm of confessionalisation invokes a strategy of state and clerical power. Its enforcement and exercise in political practice were illustrated by normative materials that represented attendant signs of a development of the catholic confessionalisation. The target of this thesis is firstly to describe the progress of politics concerning recatholisation in a relationship to one of Prague's towns by using contemporary decrees of both secular and clerical origin. Furthermore, it shall investigate issues echoing within and from life of the New-Prague-Town's society of the 17th century. This within both public and private spheres of burgess' life. In order to reveal a correct reflection of the whole structure of the progression...
