The Reconstruction of the Stone Box containing the Crown of St. Wenceslas. The Karlštejn Restoration and its reflection in the Czech Press
Art mecenat of the Cross Order' s with the Red Star Grandmaster Francis Matthew Böhmb (1722-1750)
Pučalík, Marek ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Daniel, Ladislav (referee) ; Vlnas, Vít (referee)
The paper aims on the cultural life of Francis Matthew Böhmb (1722- 1750), a native of Lubenec (Bohemia), Superior General of the Order of Crusaders with the Red Star in Prague. The Grand Master of the Order took the vows under the rule of sophisticated, erudite lawyer Grandmaster Martin Constantine Beinlich and in the second half of the 17th century tread in the steps of the Restorer of the Order, George Ignatius Pospichal. Sophisticated Böhmb became parish priest in Carlsbad firs. It was in 1720 when the General Prior called him to Prague as a Prior and after Beinlich's death was, on the feast of St. Agnes in March 2, 1722, unanimously elected Grand Master. Thesis followed particularly the cultural activities of the forenamed prelate, in the time of the day-to-day duties of the convent ad Pedem Pontis. It was Beinlich, begining to negotiate an extended Order range beyond the borders of the Czech Kingdom, however it was Böhmb's duty to realize this idea when, in 1723, he installed the Knights of the Cross in Bratislava (Pressburg), and ten years after, in Vienna. In Bratislava he let to build a new commendam's hospital there, as in Vienna, where he used the newly erected prestigious church of St. Charles Borromeo. At home he, in the thirties of the 18th century, let the church of St. Mary...
Women in the Recatholization of the Czech Lands
Jiřincová, Barbora ; Vlnas, Vít (advisor) ; Čornejová, Ivana (referee) ; Knoz, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis addresses the topic of women in the process of the recatholization of Bohemia and focuses mainly on the first half of the 17th century. The author investigated if and how much the experience of women differed from that of men. More than the legislation and newly created norms the application of these directions enlightens the topic of women. Rich material connected to the activity of the recatholization commission and other authorities devoted to the conversion of Czech population was used. Sources of statistical character were used for evaluation of the results of the process. Because of their extent, regional restriction had to be made - we focused on Boleslavsko. In the focus of the thesis were mainly townswomen and lower nobility. One of the most important findings is the fact that the authorities saw women as important as men in the process. Although specific, seemingly more moderate, means for coercion were used in women's case. This flexibility is typical for the Catholic church's approach to women and we are in concord with other researchers, mostly from abroad. The findings also contribute to our knowledge of the process of the recatholization of the Czech lands. KEY WORDS Recatholization, Catholic reformation, women's history, gender history, early modern ages, counter-reformation.
Criminality in the Říčany District in the Second Half of the 17th Century
The baroque Waldsteine in Bohemia (1640-1740)
Hrbek, Jiří ; Maur, Eduard (advisor) ; Petráň, Josef (referee) ; Vlnas, Vít (referee)
My thesis describes the evolution of the Waldstein clan in the age of one hundred years after the Thirty Years War. Both termini which I have chosen (1640 and 1740) are not exactly kept because of logic of my constructions. I aspire to commit an integrated and compact view of activities of Waldstein clan, which belonged to an aristocratic class through its property, political power and an amount of social relations. It was one of the most famous and most powerful family structures in early modern Bohemia and in the whole Habsburg monarchy as well. My method combines a lot of approaches including biography (prosopography) and structure analysis. I want to inquire the relations between the Waldstein family and the changing social and political structures, in which they acted. The first part concerns stories of the personalities growing from the clan, their activities in the frame of early modern state and its administration. In the time of 17th and 18th centuries, this activity was connected with the fealty to the ruler and the service for the ruler was an essential assumption for making the career. As courtiers, diplomats and officers, the Waldsteine came up to expectations of their estate. The models of aristocratic careers I have related to the life cycle and I have described the making of...
Women in Reformation
Hanušová, Barbora ; Vlnas, Vít (advisor) ; Čornejová, Ivana (referee)
Women in Reformation The position of women developed throughout history. Religious reformation, which took place in the early 16th century in the German speaking countries and hundred years earlier in the Czech Kingdom, was one of the movements which changed radically the position of women in the society. First, the religious leaders beginning with Martin Luther changed the clerical view which saw women as incompetent, incomplete and sinful beings into one of respect to the gender and its specifics and to the biological role played by women - motherhood. As a result, women were respected in the society as wives and mothers; nobody wrote preaching about them being danger to men anymore. But with the attack on the monasteries women were deprived of the only way for higher education and independence offered to them in these institutions. The Czech reformation never fully changed its view on marriage. Celibacy and virginity were still considered better ways to salvation then marriage and especially its consummation. In the end both Utraquists and the Unity of Brethren accepted Luther's view on marriage, especially the marriage of priests, but never fully. They tended to see celibacy as the better although for most people impossible way. But the position of women in these branches of Czech reformation was...
The Medals of the Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine.
Kleisner, Tomáš ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Vlnas, Vít (referee) ; Vácha, Štěpán (referee)
THE WORK DEALS WITH MEDALS MADE FOR THE EMPEROR FRANCIS STEPHEN OF LORRAINE ((8th DECEMBER 1708 Nancy 18th AUGUST 1765 INNSBRUCK). THEY ARE NOT ONLY DESCRIBED BUT ALSO EXPLAINED AS TOOLS OF POLITICAL PROPAGANDA IN THE TIME WITHOUT TELEVISION AND RADIO BROADCASTING WHEN PAPERS WERE NOT PRINTED DAILY BUT ONCE A WEEK. THE DUKES OF LORRAINE HAD LONG MINTED THEIR OWN COINS. UNLIKE COINS, MEDALS DID NOT HAVE A SET VALUE OR EVEN A MONETARY FUNCTION, AND THEIR PRODUCTION WAS NOT RESERVED FOR THE GOVERNMENT. THE MEDALS SHOW PEOPLE AS THEY WISH TO BE PERCEIVED BY THE PUBLIC. INDIVIDUAL DETAILS ARE NOT FAITHFULL REPRESENTATIONS OF REALITY, THEY ARE SYMBOLS. THE INSCRIPTIONS SUMMARIZED A MAN'S SOCIAL STATUS AND TITLES. THE REVERSE SHOWS THE INTENTION OF THE ISSUER. USING EMBLEMS IT EITHER EXPRESSES GENERAL MORAL PRECEPTS OR CELEBRATES SUCCESSES ACHIEVED. THE IMPERIAL COURT GAVE OFFICIAL MEDALS A UNIFORM CHARACTER. THE VIENNA MINT HAD AN OFFICIAL PORTRAIT OBVERSE AT THEIR DISPOSAL, FOR WHICH THE ENGRAVER CREATED ORIGINAL REVERSES AS REQUESTED. ASIDE FROM THE COURT COMMISSIONS ARTISTS ALSO MADE MEDALS THEY SUPPOSED WOULD SELL WELL. MEDAL MAKERS SOLD THEIR WORK EITHER THEMSELVES OR IN BOOKSHOPS AND PRINTING HOUSES AND THE MEDALS WERE PART OF THE NEWS OF THE DAY. MOST BAROQUE MEDALS WERE COLLECTIVE WORKS. THE THEME, MOTTO,...
Formation of national identity in a multinational environment: Paris immigrants in the years 1848-1900
Olšáková, Doubravka ; Vlnas, Vít (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee) ; Galmiche, Xavier (referee)
The thesis deals with the problem of formation national identity in a multinational milieu on the case study of immigrants in Paris 1848-1900. This study is based on the analysis of archival books stored in Archives de Paris. The theories of nationalism are confronted with the quantitative analysis of data mentioned in the application forms. The analysis is made for Germany, Luxembourg, Bohemia and Hungary. The general trend tends toward the identification with State-Nation, the only exception is Bohemia. The majority of immigrants from this country professed to Austria. However, the general trend pointed out that the delay of mass anticipation was bigger than supposed by the theoretical issues. This phenomenon is due to the weak social mobilization caused by the limited capabilities and possibilities of leading local elites. The author tries to explain the Czech exception through the semiotic analysis of collective memory transformation made on the examples of notions frontier and out/and. Contributions to the live and work of German-Bohemian artist Karl Krattner(1862-1926)
Petráňová, Tereza ; Vlnas, Vít (advisor) ; Sekyrka, Tomáš (referee)
My work is mostly considering profesor Karl Krattner, who was one of the most brisk figures of the czech-german culture life at the end of 19. and the beginnig of 20. century. As a profesor at the Academy of arts he significanty contributed to the culture events in Prague and also became an important representative ofthe monumental religious painters. Profesor Krattner was a member of many art clubs such as Moderní galerie, certainly the most important one, Metznerbund, Club of the german artists in Bohemia and many others. There were many art clubs existing in Bohemia and Prague in that time and I focus on them in one of the chapters and the last chapter describes the situaton in the north of Bohemia where The Metznerbund became an important art club. The whole work is written as a historical excursion into the cultural world of the end of 19. and the beginning of 20. century.
Prague's Archbishop Johann Friedrich von Waldstein and his controversy on the Turkish wars taxes (1682-1694)
Havlík, Jiří ; Čornejová, Ivana (advisor) ; Vlnas, Vít (referee) ; Maur, Eduard (referee)
The ann of this thesis of archbishop of Prague Johann Friedrich von Waldstein (1642 - 1694; archbishop 1675-1694) consists in description of conflicts with Czech land assembly and state apparatus in the years 1678, 1679, 1682-1686 and 1691-1694. The last and most important continued also after his death (3'^'* June 1694). That time Czech clergy sent two deputies (further archbishop Daniel Ignatius Mayer of Mayem and abbot of monastery in Plasy Andreas Troyer) to Vienna, to arrange adjustment of a dispount, which culminated on the beginning of the year 1694. Principal chapters of this thesis deal with conflicts in the years 1682-1686 and 1691- 1694 (chapters 4-7). These are based on detailed archive research, especially of sources of 1®' department of National Archives in Czech republic (Archives of archiepiscopate in Prague), Family archives of Waldstein, located in The Regional State Archives in Prague and Archivio Segreto Vaticano in Cittá del Vaticano. Some subsidiary sources I have found also in Archivům Romanům Societatis Jesu, The Regional State Archives in Litoměřice or in Archivio di Pontificia Universita Gregoriana in Italy, Main issue of the thesis shapes four points: First one was the description of main events of the history of Prague archiepiscopate (and in part also of Litoměřice episcopate),...
