Špes, Jakub ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
This thesis examines the impact of the Korean War on U.S. foreign policy toward the wars in Indochina and Vietnam during the Cold War. The Korean War, which took place from 1950 to 1953, had profound and indelible consequences for U.S. foreign policy, particularly toward Southeast Asia, and the experience and erudition gained in the Korean War influenced the United States' approach to the wars in Indochina and Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. For this thesis, I have drawn on scholarly literature and analysis of official U.S. State Department documents published in a compilation entitled Foreign Relations of the United States. The thesis is divided into three main parts: in the first I describe terms associated with overall American foreign policy during the second half of the twentieth century, in the second I briefly summarize the Korean War, and in the third I discuss Indochina, Vietnam, and lessons from Korea. The thesis concludes with the verdict that the Korean War had a profound impact on U.S. foreign policy toward the wars in Indochina and Vietnam.
British foreign policy in the context of the partition of India
Lacko, Daniel ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
The thesis deals with the decolonization process of the partition of India from 1947 and its consequences. Its goal is to draw conclusions regarding the role of British foreign policy (the British government) in this process, from which two new sovereign states emerged - India and Pakistan, whose relations are still characterized by their rivalry. Specifically, the thesis seeks to answer two research questions. First, whether British foreign policy actions had an impact on the emergence of the Indo-Pakistani rivalry. Second, if so, were those actions the main causes of this rivalry, or were other events (unrelated to British action) responsible for it. In its first part, the thesis also discusses the phenomenon of decolonization from a theoretical point of view. The second part is dedicated to a case study of the partition of India. This part is in the second chapter devoted to a detailed description of the most important events from the period 1857-1947, which has the task of providing the reader with an image of how the partition of India itself took place in 1947 and what was a role that the British played in it. The third chapter, still part of the case study, begins by briefly describing the aftermath of the partition of India and the origin of the Indo-Pakistani rivalry. Then the connection...

History or Fiction? The Question of Hybrid Literature: Laurent Binet's Novel HHhH
Soukup, Jan ; Šuman, Záviš (referee)
The diploma thesis concerns the questions of hybrid literature, especially the novel HHhH by Laurent Binet. Even though history and fiction can impact and enrich each other, their relationship is quite problematic. Therefore philosophers, historians and literary critics are trying to answer the questions of how to write (about) history. Laurent Binet tackles this in his novel HHhH, in which two storylines keep alternating. In the first one narrator constantly addresses the reader, expressing his doubts if it is even possible to give a faithful account of an historical event. In the second storyline he portrays the events that led to the assassination of deputy Reich Protector of the Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich. The goal of the thesis is to analyse the relationship between history and fiction, as this relationship has during the 20th century undergone rapid changes, which are also apparent in the analysed text. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first, which serves as a theoretical base for the subsequent analysis of HHhH, depicts the historiographical approaches, which have changed and evolved significantly in the 20th century. The second part tracks the reflections of the particular historiographical approaches in HHhH and examines, which conclusions has the author reached in his...

Kšírová, Kristýna ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of coca cultivation regulation attempts in Peru and Bolivia. The main goal is to determine in which aspects are the two policies different and if one of the proposed models can be described as more effective. The author introduces the forming moments of anti-drug policy on the world scale, she continues by conceptualising coca as a plant traditionally used by indigenous population and also a substance that was classified as a narcotic substance by the UN. The author then proposes a comparative analysis of the following aspects: the UNODC data on coca cultivation, the characteristics of the areas of coca cultivation and the role of coca unions in each state. In the last section the historical evolution of anti-drug policies is also explored. The results suggest that the states differ in each of the studied areas. The author assumes the more effective model is the Bolivian policy of 'social control'.
Impact of Organized Crime on the Press Freedom: Comparison of Mexico and Colombia
Horák, Benjamin ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with selected elements of organized crime and its impact on the freedom of the press. The thesis aims to confirm or refute the hypothesis that organized crime impacts press freedom using a qualitative comparative case study analysis of selected countries. As mentioned above, organized crime is such a complex concept that it is essential to define the specific actors or elements of this criminal activity. This paper focuses on selected actors, which are organized criminal groups - drug cartels and corruption as an element of organized crime. The research questions the thesis seeks to answer are "How do drug cartels affect the freedom of the press?" and "How does corruption affect press freedom?". If the hypothesis is confirmed, the author will seek to answer the additional sub-question, "How do Mexico and Colombia approach the impact of organized crime on press freedom?". The results of the thesis confirm the hypothesis and conclude that organized crime impacts press freedom. The two specific sources of this influence, i.e., drug cartels and corruption, affect press freedom mainly through extensive violence against journalists, thus having a systematic and long-term negative impact on their security. Another means of influence is undermining the state's capacity and...
