Divinatory presages in heroic stories of Scandinavian and Greek mytology
Spáčilová, Hana ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Březinová, Helena (referee)
This paper attempts to describe the interventions of the fate into the lives of chosen characters from the heroic stories presented by Scandinavian legendary sagas, heroic lays from Poetic Edda, Homeric epics and Greek tragedies. After the general introduction, which briefly describes the concepts of the fate in both mythologies, follows a quiet extensive part about the deities determining the fate. Furthermore, the term divinatory presages is defined, and descriptions of several characters, who tell the presages are said. The major focus of the paper, which examines the specific heroic stories, follows. That implies, how the heroes obtain the presages, who or what is telling the presages and especially how the heroes react: whether by activity or by passive submission and what is the result of those reactions. The conclusion should summarize the role of the fate and the divinatory presages in the mythologies of both cultures. Key words: Ancient Greek heroic mytology, Old Norse heroic mythology, fate, prophecy, reaction to necessity.
The Potential of Cyber Threats in the Critical Energy Infrastructure
Starý, Jan ; Schmidt, Nikola (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
Diploma thesis analyses the potential of Cyber Threats towards critical energy infrastructure in terms of network theories originating in graph theories, complex networks and technological possibilities how to compromise security of networks belonging to critical infrastructure. By the analysis of defined dependent and independent variables the author finds out how networks behave under which circumstances, what means exist in the field of network security and if adopted measures to increase security are in accordance with the effort of creation safe and decentralized system of critical energy infrastructure. Main emphasis is put on the concept of smart grids as possible solution of decentralization. In these terms technical means of security are studied especially with emphasis on SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems and the Internet as one of the essential component of communication in modern communication technologies.
Religion and Humour: Comical Layers in Old Norse Religious Texts and Their Relationship to the Offical Religion
Michalíková, Jana ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Chlup, Radek (referee)
This paper focuses on the comic layers in Eddic mythological poetry, namely in Lokasenna, Hárbarðsljóð and Ϸrymskviða, and on their relation to the Old Norse religion. In the past, these comic and seemingly blasphemic poems used to be interpreted as a display of criticism of the religious system or, due to the impossibility to date their origin, as a product of late decadent paganism or even as a Christian satire of this religion. This paper shows that such interpretations are not necessary, and that the comic Eddic poems could have existed as a functional part of the Old Norse religion. It points out the affinity of the categories of religious humour and chaos. Subsequently, it presents various theories, mostly from the field of anthropology of religion, which show that a temporarily confrontation of order with chaos can be a desirable practise for a religion, and that humour can serve as a suitable means to achieve such a confrontation. The second part of the paper focuses on the particular Eddic poems. It analyses in detail their comic layers, and examines the possibilities of their function within the Old Norse religion on the background of the notion of piety and blasphemy in their time. It demonstrates their link to the tradition of ritualized verbal duels and other socio-cultural phenomena,...
The mythologist of the early and high German romanticism. The concept of the myth in the beginning of the 19th Century
Nedbalová, Julia ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
The thesis presents the mythological studies of the German Romantics. The research focuses on the four important mythologists - Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Creuzer, Karl Otfried Müller and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling. The analysis of their work leads to their specific concept of the myth. The early enlightenment tendencies, which rejected the myths as stories about gods of the undeveloped men were replaced with the conception of the romantics. They disclosed the symbolic character of the myths and explained the origin and nationalization of the myth on the basis of the symbol theory. At the same time they award truth to the mythological process which the man necessarily goes through. The creation of God in the mind of man is clarified with the philosophy of mythology. This way the romantics contribute to the development of the mythology towards a critical historical science.
Complete Boolean Algebras and Extremally Disconnected Compact Spaces
Starý, Jan ; Simon, Petr (advisor) ; Bukovský, Lev (referee) ; Thümmel, Egbert (referee)
We study the existence of special points in extremally disconnected compact topological spaces that witness their nonhomogeneity. Via Stone duality, we are looking for ultrafilters on complete Boolean algebras with special combinatorial properties. We introduce the notion of a coherent ultrafilter (coherent P-point, coherently selective). We show that generic existence of such ultrafilters on every complete ccc Boolean algebra of weight not exceeding the continuum is consistent with set theory, and that they witness the nonhomogeneity of the corresponding Stone spaces. We study the properties of the order-sequential property on σ-complete Boolean algebras and its relation to measure-theoretic properties. We ask whether the order-sequential topology can be compact in a nontrivial case, and partially answer the question in a special case of the Suslin algebra associated with a Suslin tree.
Seiðr
Šebetovská, Michaela ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
SEIÐR Michaela Šebetovská AAAABSTRACTBSTRACTBSTRACTBSTRACT The thesis is about an Old-Norse practice called seiðr, which was performed as a prophetic and magical ritual, according to some authors similarly to shamanic ones. The emphasis is put on information obtained from the Old-Norse textual sources. Despite their fragmentary nature, the aim of this work is to make a well-arranged summary of the facts provided by these primary sources. The main subjects are the beings performing seiðr, their characteristics, place in society, equipment and conditions required for the ritual and its goal. This information is then used for interpretation and a detailed analysis of several aspects of seiðr.
Initiation of the Germanic Hero in Fornaldarsõgur
Fryje, Jakub ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Antalík, Dalibor (referee)
The main theme of this paper is the initiation of the heroes from two important fornaldarsõgur: The Saga of the Võlsungs and The Saga of the King Hrólf Kraki. These heroes are called Sigurð, Sigmund, Sinfjõtli and Hõtt. The tales of these four characters acting in the stories that are preserved in the sagas we divide into three phases, which can be designated like separation phase, liminal phase and a return. In this case we are inspired by the conception of Arnold van Gennep, who dividided the rites of passage in this manner. The liminal phase of the heroic story is most important for us. It is the core of the initiation process, which is experiencing the hero, and the core of the rite of passage as well. In our stories is significant for the liminal phase for example a monster killed by the hero, hero's encounter with a numinous beings, or hero's abidance in certain liminal state. The main objective of this thesis is using primary sources and secondary literature by scholars such as Otto Höfler, Victor Turner or Jens Peter Schjødt, to create consise analysis of the liminal phase of three stories about germanic heroes, which is possible to designate as the initiation texts. This analysis should clarify, how these initiation texts relate with the initiation rituals and - in certain cases - with the...
Wetting and Spreading of Solder on PCB Surface
Wiesner, Lukáš ; Špinka, Jiří (referee) ; Starý, Jiří (advisor)
This work deals with the metal surface wetting problems of molten lead-free solder and monitoring of ongoing processes at the inter-phase interface. This work also deals with flushing monitoring of spreading velocity on solder finishes Ni/Au and Immersion Sn deposited on copper plated base material FR4 using digital cameras. Measurement is performed at the improved workplace. After the reflow process is measured by length of spreading solder. It evaluates and compares the time dependence of velocity of spreading solder for Ni/Au and Immersion Sn finishes.
Influence of Bottom Preheating in Rework of Assembled PCB
Čechák, Ondřej ; Bžoněk, Tomáš (referee) ; Starý, Jiří (advisor)
This bachelor's thesis introduces the problematics of physical mechanisms of heat transfer and the correlative mathematical formulas and the use of mentioned problematics in the technology of bottom preheating in the rework of assembled printed circuit boards. It explains the importance and reasons of use of this technology, not merely in the professional production. It focuses on expert analysis of the appliances based on their properties and clarifies the differences in basic types of the devices. The emphasis is then laid on a practical testing of the technical parameters of the preheating devices as well as on an experimental design and a practical testing of a local bottom printed circuit board preheater.
