Female Professors and Senior Lecturers of Law - Women in a Prestigious Profession
Novotná, Věra ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Havelková, Barbara (referee)
Women in the high academic positions represent an elite group of women, whose experience has not been described separately in the Czech sociological context yet. The place of university as well as the law professional field are historically masculine denoted areas, where women entered with many difficulties to. Despite of opening of this academic both eductional and professional area to women, we still see the high vertical segregation of the high academic positions. The interviews were ment to show how women reflect their own experience as a high positioned woman working in the university surrounding. I found out that the interviewed women entered this field not only thanks to their own socio-cultural capital, but firstly thanks to the favourable structural conditions. Most of them identify themselves with their pedagogical role very significantly, all of them have developed a very strong tie to their profession. Their view of own and others women position is rather optimistic, with limited gender sensitivity, and is strongly influenced by their life experience of practising of their profession in the communist period and strong liberalism of opinion.
Short Awakening: Springing up of New Gender Topics in the Czech Press in 1960s.
Miholová, Kristýna ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Kiczková, Zuzana (referee)
The graduate thesis analyses the construction of gender order and gender relations under the communism in socialist Czechoslovakia with special emphasise on the sixties. The text is concerned on the reflection of state-socialist gender order in media articles. My sources of findings were Rudé právo as a representative of official state discourse and Literární noviny and Literární listy as a "cultural periodical", which represent intellectual discourse. In first part I propose several theoretical concepts about gender aspects of communist ideology and about the key changes which means the state-socialist form of emancipation for women's life. On the basis of these concepts I analyse the selected articles by thematic analysis and ideological analysis (a type of CDA). The special attention is focused on theoretical analysis of discussion which I have found in Literární noviny in 1967. This discussion was opened by publishing book The second sex which was written by Simone de Beauvoir. I consider this debate as new and by that time isolated disputation about gender order and women emancipation process. Especially in a comparison with official state approach, which followed up Marxist approach and which was focused on the women employment as a key form of women emancipation. On the other hand, new disputation in...
Gender aspects of presentation of science in media : Presentation of female and male scientists
Tenglerová, Hana ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Maříková, Hana (referee)
Science plays an important role in society, has an authoritative position and gets considerable financial resources. The media's image is constantly shaping and influencing the perception of society at large and the scientist alone. The work focuses on how science is constructed in the media from a gender perspective, how it reflects and reproduces the gendered order of our society. Research focus here concentrates on the presentation of women and men - scientists in four major Czech newspapers. Theoretical basis of the work are constructivism and particularly feminist media theory. Metodology is based on quantitative content analysis and qualitative analysis, inspired by semiology. Analysis results show that the women scientists are in the presentation of science ignored and their contribution is reduced in many aspects. From a quantitative underrepresenation, to their higher concentration at the backsides of the papers, the less authoritative role given to them in articles or by using of motherhood as a means of distracting from their expertise: preferred representatives of medial science are male. Key words: gender, media, science.
Household school, it's history, development and the future in the future in the Czech Republic in the eyes of the studies alumnae
Hylová, Petra ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Smetáčková, Irena (referee)
The topic of my thesis is the Household school, its history, development and its future in the Czech Republic as seen through the eyes of graduates. In this thesis I examine the Household school also as an institution, especially its history, function and its integration into the system of education. Using available materials, I compare the curricula and plans of individual programmes over various periods of time. Beyond the integration of the Household school into the Czech Republic's education system, I focused on the Household school's alumnae, who studied this field in various periods of the last century, and my target was to obtain their statement. I was interested mainly in their motivation to the study of this field, their expectation and then, consequently, comparison of these expectations with the reality. As an interesting result seems the view of this field in the society which the alumnae met with while the looking for a job on the market. For this purpose, I organised personal meetings and interviews with these alumnae. As one of the alumnae of this programme, I compared my own experience with the experience of the research's participants and for the evaluation of the form and atmosphere I used my own gender sensitivity.
Strategies promoting the political participation of women in the Czech republic: the case study of the NGO Fórum 50 %
Bačová, Veronika ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Havelková, Barbara (referee)
Strategies promoting the political participation of women in the Czech republic: the case study of the NGO Fórum 50 % The political participation and representation of women is an important indicator of democracy. In the Czech republic, the underrepresentation of women in decision-making is considerable. Moreover, the czech political representation is not favourable for active promotion of women in politics. The only organization engaged in this issue is Fórum 50 %. It promotes women participation and representation in all decision-making positions. This case study explores this NGO. Based on the examination of documents on six interviews with its members it presents the basic information on the organizational structure, on its goals, activites and strategies. Further, the study identifies barriers like gender blindness of political parties, gender stereotypes, financial dependency of the organization restraining its activities. It presents how Fórum 50 % is legitimizing its existence as well as the whole issue of the political participation of women within the antifeminist atmosphere of the czech political arena. Finally, the study presents how Fórum 50 % advances the public discourse about the issue and how it succeeds to a certain degree in "breaking" the conservative attitude of some politicians....
Men's antifeminist identity - critical analysis of men's critique of feminist men.
Pavlas, Tomáš ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Matonoha, Jan (referee)
The general question of this diploma thesis is the compatibility of present ideas of masculinity with democracy. The thesis narrows down the field of study onto men's antifeminist identity and maps out the variety within men's antifeminist movement. The methodology of the presented research is based on semantic and discursive analyses. The identity of antifeminist men is not studied independently, but by the means of a critical analysis of the antifeminist men's construction of their relationship to feminist men. The analyzed material consists of texts in which men are critical of feminist men. The thesis shows in what ways antifeminist men use diverse discursive techniques to construct various images of feminist men, images of themselves, and images of their mutual relationships. Great attention is also paid to a critical analysis of such constructions delivered from the perspective of gender studies and men's studies; the position of the author of this thesis is also explicitly acknowledged as a departure point for a critical reflection of the discussed images, their relationships and mechanisms of their construction. Further, a collection of social practices by means of which antifeminist men contribute to the construction of "reality" are introduced. The studied case of antifeminist identity is put...
Gender stereotypes from teachers' approach to students at the Grammar School.
Mrůzková, Helena ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Smetáčková, Irena (referee)
Gender stereotypes exist in society at large, and in the education system in particular. These stereotypes show the male as the dominant person, who works outside the home in often prestigious occupations. The female is usually showed as being subordinate and confined to the home. Moreover, these stereotypes give the fact that females choose predominantly humanistic and domestic sciences, while males choose science and technology. In my dissertation I analyze gender stereotypes that are in teachers' minds at the Grammar School. Eight teachers participated in this research, in eight different classes. The research is separated into three basic parts: videotyping of lessons and their analyze, the self-reflection from teachers and finally, individual interwiev between researcher and respondent that is also analysed in the name of gender stereotypes. The aim of my research is to analyze gender stereotypes from teachers to students with aspect of different access to girls and boys.
