Ethnic Identity and conflict (on the Example of Multiethnic Territory of Cruise Ships)
Medvecká, Zuzana ; Skupnik, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Kobes, Tomáš (referee)
In my doctoral thesis, which I have elaborated on the basis of my diploma thesis Doubled Identity of Crew Members on Cruise Ships as the Instrument of Cultural Adaptation, supervised by Mgr. Helena Tužinská, PhD., I have analysed the way of life of crew members sharing the multiethnical territory of cruise ships. Crew members working there come from over 50 different countries. In spite of their different origins and cultures which have been forming their behaviour and way of thinking, they share small space without any conflicts. My goal is to sum up the basic conditions which should be met in any multiethnical society to ensure that there would not be any conflicts between its habitants. According to my hypothesis there is a need of other than ethnical identity which could unify them on other than ethnical basis. In the territory of cruise ships it is the socio-professional identity of 'crew member '. I found out that there are two main factors responsible for successful co-existence of people from different cultures here - communication and the system of values. That is why from all factors in which we can observe socio-professional identity of crew members I preferably analyse rules and norms established by crew members and lingua franca used on cruise ships called 'ship language'. The specific...

Today the world population has reached its historical maximum and continues to rise. Billions of people travel in everyday life either to work and school or for community services. The daily practice of commuting substantially contributes to the perception of space of everyday life and to the image of city landscape. PhDr. Miloš Kučera, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The dissertation thesis presents the results of ethnographic research conducted between 2005 and 2012. The practical part presents a number of topical articles with the intention to present the issues relating to the education of Roma in the Czech Republic from different perspectives. Migrants in irregular position - Czechia: a country of destination
Medová, Lenka ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Toušek, Václav (referee)
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Europe has been confronted with an increase of irregular migration in connexion to the collapse of the communist regimes. Today, it is estimated that there are from about 2 to 4 million irregular migrants living in the European Union. Most of them take part in local informal economies. Besides traditional immigration countries of Western Europe, the southern European countries have also become a destination region of irregular migration. Recently though, the same can be said about some post- communist European countries, namely Czechia. The dissertation focuses on irregular migration in Czechia. More specifically, it deals with irregularly working migrants in the period preceding the global economic crisis. As there is insufficient level of knowledge of the phenomenon in Czechia, the dissertation delivers empirical material regarding forms and reasons of irregular migration and structure, volume and strategies of irregularly working migrants. These characteristics are framed within the European context. Moreover, from the terminological point of view, the dissertation tries to bypass the limitations of the Czech literature and presents own terminology of the given processes and their actors. Finally, the dissertation aims to contribute to current theoretical and...

Kubáčková, Patricie ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Eckertová, Eva (referee) ; Moravcová, Mirjam (referee)
Patricie Kubáčková Transitional experience as reflected by the first Czech immigrant generation in the USA with a special focus on language This dissertation is focused on how the members of the first generation of the Czech immigrants in the USA reflected in the autobiographical narrative interviews their life experience of emigration and their effort on adaptation in the new country where they settled down and started their new life. In the reflection of the emigration they considered not only their situation but the future of their offspring too. As a unifying topic the motive of an stranger was determined. The strangers begin their new life in the new country, however, their origin remains detectable even after long time. This social legibility of their origin is analysed in the non-native accent and on different assimilative strategies concerning the names of the immigrants. I understand the first immigrant generation as a transitional generation. I focus on how the members of this generation reflected their language dissimilarity in their narrations if they experienced it as discredited or as a stigma and under what circumstances. In the gathered and analysed material I studied the attitude of the respondents to the native language maintenance and its transferirng to their offspring. I also dealt with...
Polish Workers in Czechoslovakia: Unwelcome Friendship: Specific features of temporary labor migration in the socialist system
Klípa, Ondřej ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Zahradníček, Tomáš (referee)
Dissertation Title Polish Workers in Czechoslovakia: Unwelcome Friendship Specific features of temporary labor migration in the socialist system Author Ondřej Klípa Summary The aim of the dissertation is to study the case of Polish workers in Czechoslovakia who were employed on conditions set by intergovernmental treaties. Most of them were women. This case had two specific features. First, it was highly regulated by both of the co-operating states. Second, the state bodies tried to control intensively both the workers in order to isolate them from local population and the public discourse of this topic. In this study I argue that both of the features arise from fundamental elements of socialist system, which are "economy of shortage" and totalitarianism. These elements were identified in the work of Hungarian economist János Kornai. Instead of totalitarianism as a coherent concept I use only certain totalitarian practices that were exercised with variable intensity, depending on circumstances. In the dissertation I examine causality between these two fundamental elements (independent variables) and both regulation and control (dependent variables). For this purpose I consider the studied case as a specific model of temporary labor migration in socialist system. The case is also situated in a broader...
