Romantic short stories of Karel Sabina
Hesová, Petra ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Menclová, Věra (referee)
The thesis deals with the prose work written by KAREL SABINA in the period from 1835 till 1848. The starting point of the thesis is an analysis of Hesperidky (Ervín), a not very wellknown story, through which the author shows general features of romantic literature in the Czech as well as in the European context. In the next chapter we can find characteristic of the typical heroes of Sabina's works, in particularit means a tramp, a gravedigger, an executioner and different images of female characters. The last two chapters deal with an analysis of texts that have remained unnoticed by the professional literature so far - unpublished prose Čech and tales Obrazy a květy snů. The work also includes an extensive supplement with a list of Sabina's prose works written before March 1848, and with an edition of the manuscript of Čech and a transcript of the novel Vesničané.
A family picture through the short stories of Ignát Herrmann
Fuchsová, Ilona Anna ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Janáček, Pavel (referee)
This Diploma thesis interprets five collections of stories by Ignát Herrmann (Drobní lidé I. [Small people I.], Muž bez třináctky [A man without number thirteen], Rodiny a rodinky [Families and little Families], Staří mládenci [Old Bachelors], Z chudého kalamáře [From the poor inkpot]) written between 1870 and 1900, and focuses on the subject of 'the family'. 'The family' is initially qualified as a basic social unit, and subsequently implanted in to the context of Czech middle-class society between 1870 and 1900 as a two generation family, with a definitive and functional division of male and female roles. The analysis of Herrmann's characters in numerous family roles, clearly illustrates the importance of 'the family' in the author's stories, and is conclusively considered as the high point of Herrmann's work.
The graveyard as a literary place in the 19th century Czech fiction
Karolina Svetla's works in the discourse of literary critic of the second half of the nineteenth century (ways to read national literature)
Říha, Ivo ; Šmahelová, Hana (advisor) ; Vaněk, Václav (referee) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The presented thesis interprets works by Karolina Světlá on the background of Czech literary critical discourse in the second half of the nineteenth century. It focuses on the period approaches to the forms and functions of national literature. It is aimed at problems of tasks set on a Czech writer. Karolina Světla's prose raises a question - in what extent such "political order" might have influenced individual writing style. We are interested in the issue of both author's and reader's reflection of patriotic-educational influence on literary output. Such period acceptance of this intention of given kind as a factor that in desirable (but in no manner restricting) way pre-sets the formation of the sense of artwork, is understood as an expression of heritage of early revival idea (belief in a nonsubstitutable power of national literature the task of which is to arouse intellectual life of a nation and to guard its independence and uniqueness is a part of this heritage in the process). It is understood as an expression of movement in myth about a nation raised from the dead - a movement that under the terms of a generally accepted patriotic-educational communication code is shared by both readers and their writer. An answer to the question of how the basic aspects of the discourse of Czech literature then...
Melancholy in the poetry of Antonín Sova
Urbanová, Martina ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Vaněk, Václav (referee)
The main theme of this thesis is a literary motive of melancholy in the poetry of a Czech poet Antonín Sova. The end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century we can consider as a specifically melancholic and it is possible to see it especially in pieces of writing of many authors. The rare situation happened in the Czech lands. The Czechs were ready to deal with new issues, but their expectation did not come true. The frustration of all the situation is noticeable mainly in works of Czech decadents, but we can also see it in the poetry of Antonín Sova. It is obvious in his Vybouřené smutky and then in Ještě jednou se vrátíme... which follows and we chose it as a basic text for our interpretation of melancholic motive in Sova's poetry. It was published in time of culminating expectations of some changes in the field of social situation, which was becoming unbearable. It is impossible to omit melancholic feeling in Ještě jednou se vrátíme..., but it is somehow modified, especially in his lyric poetry, which does not sound unambiguously tragical, but on the contrary it offers particular hopes. For the purpose of getting to know the motive of melancholy we researched a concept of melancholy during its history. It enabled us to point out some typical features of melancholy like e. g. involvement in the...
Antonin Sova's late lyric poetry (1918-1928)
Raš, Jakub ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
In this thesis we deal with interpretation of the late lyric poetry of Antonin Sova (1864-1928). The late work is represented by collections Zpěvy domova (Songs of Homeland, 1918), Krvácející bratrství - Rozjímání ranní i navečerní (The Bleeding Brotherhood - Evening and Morning Meditations, 1920), Básníkovo jaro (The Poet's Spring, 1921), Básně nesobeckého srdce (The Poems of the Unselfish Heart, 1922), Jasná vidění (The Clear Visions, 1922), Naděje i bolesti (Hopes and Pains, 1924) and Drsná láska (The Rough Love, 1927), the posthumously released sets of Sova's poems from the years 1922 to 1928 called Hovory věcí (Talk of Things, 1929) and Za člověkem (To Man, 1930), then several poems contained in a book of Píseň o Rovnosti (The Song of Equality, 1951) and poems that Sova published between 1918-1919 in a satirical magazine called Šibeničky (The Small Gallows). Author's poetry is divided into four groups: 1) nature poetry, 2) intimate poetry, 3) social poetry and 4) selfreflexive poetry. In the analysis we focus on the lyrical subject - that is, to what is spoken (themes and motives), but also how to speak about in sense of epistemology (knowledge and their articulation) and axiology (values and attitudes), which often results in more or less complex models of the central ideas of reality like man, life...
Antonín Macek: the poet, publicist and writer
Konvalinka, Filip ; Heczková, Libuše (referee) ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor)
The present study Antonín Macek: the poet, the publicist and the prosaist is concerned with the works of Antonín Macek, one of the forgotten Czech authors of the first two decades of twentieth century. The literary science has not taken the sufficient account of his artistic legacy so far. Just the marxistic theorists in the second half of twentieth century has perused his writings and viewed Macek's merely as a revolutionary socialistic writer with respect to his leftist politics (displayed especially in his journal articles). Our main purpose is to prove that this view is quite simplified and that Macek's work at full is much richer. For this purpose we tried to restore all the original editions of Macek's writings (especially his poems and tales) to reach new and current interpretation. We attempted to specify his apparently solitary place in the history of Czech literature by marking out his relations to more remarkable writers of Macek's epoch (such as S. K. Neumann, F. X. Šalda, J. S. Machar, M. Marten, O. Theer etc.) and incorporate his works in the field of opposed contemporary styles (such as symbolism, social poetry, nature lyrics, proletary poetry etc.). We have applied special respect to religious aspects of Macek's writings, which were depreciated by the latter marxistic interpreters. Our...
