The Influence of the Korean War on the U.S. Foreign Policy toward the Indochina and Vietnam Wars
Špes, Jakub ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
This thesis examines the impact of the Korean War on U.S. foreign policy toward the wars in Indochina and Vietnam during the Cold War. The Korean War, which took place from 1950 to 1953, had profound and indelible consequences for U.S. foreign policy, particularly toward Southeast Asia, and the experience and erudition gained in the Korean War influenced the United States' approach to the wars in Indochina and Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. For this thesis, I have drawn on scholarly literature and analysis of official U.S. State Department documents published in a compilation entitled Foreign Relations of the United States. The thesis is divided into three main parts: in the first I describe terms associated with overall American foreign policy during the second half of the twentieth century, in the second I briefly summarize the Korean War, and in the third I discuss Indochina, Vietnam, and lessons from Korea. The thesis concludes with the verdict that the Korean War had a profound impact on U.S. foreign policy toward the wars in Indochina and Vietnam.
Climate change and information overload
Pittner, Jan ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the topic of information overload and climate change. The theoretical framework presents information overload as a concept in general and then in the context of climate change. It specifies how information overload can arise in terms of consumption of different media types and mentions symptoms and potential impacts of the problem. It focuses on groups of recipients of climate change information. These groups are those who experience climate change directly and those who learn about it indirectly. It focuses on fake news about climate change and ways of their misuse. It also provides a discussion on potential solutions of the problem of information overload which appear in literature as guidelines and recommendations at individual, media organizations and workplace levels. The practical part of the thesis uses a questionnaire survey to obtain specific data and then quantitatively analyses it. The collected data is divided into categories which are compared with each other using graphs and charts. The findings are placed in the context of current knowledge summarized in the theoretical framework. The main finding of this survey is that there is a positive correlation between the respondents' level of information overload and ability to act. Other findings are that...
Choughs and irises. Anthropology of tourism, space and identity in Morocco
Konopíková, Michaela ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Bláha, Jan Daniel (referee) ; Sokolíčková, Zdenka (referee)
The dissertation project is based on a long-term fieldwork among the Berber community in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains. It looks at the transformation of the local environment since new discursive practices are emerging as a result of an interference of the global economy, environmentalism and developmental policies. Following Appadurai, the thesis raises a question of locality in contemporary world and neighborhoods, which are imagined, produced, and maintained against some sort of ground while the context-generative dimension of neighborhoods provides a theoretical angle on the relationship of global and local realities with the idea of culturally hybridized world. Together with Appadurai, the thesis deals with "what locality might mean in a situation where the nation-state faces particular sorts of transnational destabilization." The thesis has thus two main aims. (1) After describing the structural conditions in which the tourism industry in the mountains operates, (2) it will discuss the limitations of the locals' responses to the global market, or more broadly the impacts of globalization. It is necessary to establish a framework, which would connect the large- scale and small-scale processes and identify the concept of their dialectical relationships. Through such a reading, the thesis...
Interconnection of online and offline social spaces: the impact of social networks on users
Pauzová, Tereza ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis describes the interconnection of online and offline social spaces, supportive Instagram profiles, the impact of social networks on users and the feelings that appear in connection with the use of social networks among users. The aim of this thesis is to answer the following three questions: (1) how respondents view the presentation of other Instagram users, (2) how they perceive supportive Instagram profiles, profiles which point out the possible differences of online and offline social space, (3) what feelings are connected with the use of social media and where are possible negative and positive impacts of social media. The theoretical part aims to describe the main concepts that are linked with social media, self- presentation and identity, it also shows the consequences of using social networks and describes supporting profiles. The practical part strives to answer the previous questions through a semi- structured interview, a questionnaire and an expert interview which is then analysed using a thematic analysis and a statistical analysis. The result of this thesis shows that people present themselves in the best way, supportive profiles are popular among respondents and they have a positive view of them and think that these profiles can help somebody. The most common...
History or Fiction? The Question of Hybrid Literature: Laurent Binet's Novel HHhH
Soukup, Jan ; Šuman, Záviš (referee)
The diploma thesis concerns the questions of hybrid literature, especially the novel HHhH by Laurent Binet. Even though history and fiction can impact and enrich each other, their relationship is quite problematic. Therefore philosophers, historians and literary critics are trying to answer the questions of how to write (about) history. Laurent Binet tackles this in his novel HHhH, in which two storylines keep alternating. In the first one narrator constantly addresses the reader, expressing his doubts if it is even possible to give a faithful account of an historical event. In the second storyline he portrays the events that led to the assassination of deputy Reich Protector of the Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich. The goal of the thesis is to analyse the relationship between history and fiction, as this relationship has during the 20th century undergone rapid changes, which are also apparent in the analysed text. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first, which serves as a theoretical base for the subsequent analysis of HHhH, depicts the historiographical approaches, which have changed and evolved significantly in the 20th century. The second part tracks the reflections of the particular historiographical approaches in HHhH and examines, which conclusions has the author reached in his...
Medial Picture and Coverage of Homelesses During Covid- 19 Crisis
Dařílek, Jan ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis covers the media image of the homelessness of one year before the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis (March 1st, 2019 to February 28th, 2020) and one year during the coronavirus crisis (March 1st, 2020 to February 28th, 2021). The key part of the thesis is the research itself, based mainly on the foreign studies of Moira J. Calder (et al., 2011), Carole Zufferey (2008; 2010; 2014) and Mao (et al., 2012). In the text are summarized almost all studies related to the media and homelessness in the Czech Republic (Kadeřávek, 2016; Stuhlíková, 2011; Košťálová, 2013; Kronika, 2011; Balcar, 2014; Aujezdský, 2014; Malík, 2011 2018; Hejnal, 2012). The research method used is a quantitative content media analysis, the result is a description of the media image. Examined were the internet news articles of the three most popular public sphere media - ČT24.cz; iRozhlas.cz; České noviny.cz and three private sphere media - Novinky.cz; iDnes.cz; Aktuálně.cz. The diploma thesis firstly focuses on the first period, then the second period, in which it analyzes and compares the media image of homelessness between public and private media, and finally compares the media image of homelessness before the beginning of the crisis and during the crisis. This study provides a key element in studying and...
Do women need to be rescued - the journey towards female heroes
Krulichová, Jana ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This thesis aims to answer how the public perceives and interprets the male gaze theory in the popular culture. Referring to Star Wars, it analyses whether and how the audience perceives the dominant male optic and how it affects an interpretation of the movies. From the theoretical concepts, feminism is mentioned in detail - specifically its second wave, including gender studies that brought attention to culture construction of femininity and masculinity, which helps to understand sexism. A crucial foundation for the thesis proceeds from feminism - a feminist film critique, namely the male gaze theory that was introduced by Laura Mulvey in 1974. This thesis introduces not only this theory, but also its critics and opposing theories that all together contributed to the transformation of the film industry. Subsequently, the developments in American society in the second half of the 20th century that have influenced the changes in pop culture is briefly discussed. Lastly, the science fiction genre and the Star Wars story and its universe are summarized. The qualitative research focuses on the audience of the Star Wars saga born in the 1990s. By analysing semi-structured interviews, the research questions are answered and confronted with findings from the semiotic analysis. The main finding of the...
Great Britain and Spanish Civil War: A Contribution to the Changing Attitudes of British Elites and Foreign Policy on the Background of the Conflict in Spain
Jan, Albert ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
Spanish Civil War in contemporary sense is used to be portrayed as a prelude to the WW2, as well as a proving ground for military equipment of Europe's dictatorships. Rather than warfare, this bachelor thesis is concerned with international dimension of said conflict, specifically its influence on Great Britain. British role in this war is, as opposed to that of nazi Germany, fascist Italy or communist Soviet Union, not well known, despite its policy of non-intervention having significant impact on the wars outcome. My intention is to explain generally the position of Great Britain and its development, as well as attitudes of certain british politicians: Neville Chamberlain, Anthony Eden, Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee. Their subsequent conduct during events leading to the outbreak of the WW2 was in my opinion heavily influenced by their experience with the conflict in Spain. I strive to contribute to better understanding of these steps of Great Britain, as from Central Europe's point of view they may seem irrational. However if we set them in the context of british foreign policy tradition and the situation Great Britain had to face with Spanish Civil War, we will reach in my opinion some interesting conclusions.
Adaptations of orchid roots to epiphytism
Ungrová, Anna ; Ponert, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Aleš (referee)
The evolutionary success of orchids is to a large extent driven by the ability to colonize epiphytic habitats. This ability is based on a number of adaptations at different levels, and the adaptive features of aerial roots can play a key role because the roots are practically the only organ providing water and nutrient uptake. The main aim of this work is to review available information about roots of epiphytic orchids (Orchidaceae), especially their adaptations to the epiphytic way of life. The roots of epiphytes must deal with a periodic lack of water and nutrients, often in conjunction with high irradiation. The roots of epiphytic orchids adapt to these conditions on many levels. Rhizodermis forms a velamen capable to retain water and nutrients and protecting roots against environmental conditions including UV radiation. Root cortex contains chloroplasts, which can perform photosynthesis at least in some orchid species. Exodermis is well differentiated with thick secondary cell walls and acts as a selective barrier for the transport of substances with the use of passage and aeration cells. The function of some adaptive structures is still unclear, for example, tilosomes could regulate transpiration. Epiphytism evolved multiple times in orchids, and some root adaptations therefore originated...
