The Element of Randomness and Its Effect
Vášová, Viktorie ; NOVÁK, Vladimír (advisor) ; KROBOT, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with the element of randomness during the rehearsal stage, and with integrating unpredictable impulses which arise from the process into the prepared scope of the performance. This study is a reflection on the author’s own experience during her Bachelor’s degree. It is based on an analysis of specific projects, most importantly, the author’s final performance ADA. We will focus, above all, on the question of how the rehearsal phase is influenced by the type of material that serves as the basis for the process, and whether and to what extent it is possible for unpredictable impulses to influence the result.

Small / Big Puppets
Strýček, Jan ; BEČKA, Marek (advisor) ; NOVÁK, Vladimír (referee)
This bachelor's work summarises in theory the practical art output of the Animation lesson on the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. It's aim is to review the creative process of the project from the very beginning to the final result. It has also meant to be a theoretical guidance for the possible candidates to create the puppet performance, based on similar principals. The first part of the work solves the question of the "typical" onlooker of the puppet theatre, a boarder line between the puppet theatre for children and adults and how to deal with it. The middle part solves the question of the problems in the multi-linear story that is conducted by the audience. Furthermore it aims to discover all possible complications, show the existing solutions and search for the reason, why this genre is considered to be minor in the theatre production. The last part solves the question of the theatre rehearsals and focuses on the differences between acting with and without a puppet.
Actor or Dancer
Šurková, Julie ; NOVÁK, Vladimír (advisor) ; TRPIŠOVSKÝ, Lukáš (referee)
This thesis is a theoretical description of my study of current and modern dance at the dance conservatory Duncan Centre. The description continues with my study at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. There is a comparison of acting and dancing. Both are close and, at the same time, distant areas of performance. The goal of the thesis it to identify the elements that are shared or unique between them. Specifically, there is a description of the difficulties for a dancer to become an actor and, on the other hand, for an actor to become a dancer. There is also a list of conditions that need to be met for somebody to be a full-time dancer and actor. The first part of the thesis describes my experience and my view of an actor and dancer. The term 'performer' is discussed as it should not be used for all the people who do more than one artistic area. The second part of the thesis deals with training that is needed for dancing and acting. There is a list of the requirements needed for a dancer to become an actor. The last part of the thesis focuses on a trial period and it finds events when the areas merge in one.

Grotesque, or Queer? Homosexual characters in Tennessee Williams's selected short stories
Novák, Vladimír ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee)
This interdisciplinary thesis examines the portrayal of homosexual characters in Tennessee Williams's selected stories. Although the theme of homosexuality reoccurs throughout Williams's work, his short fiction constitutes a unique example, as it addresses this issue explicitly. The traditional scholarly view of Williams's depiction of homosexuality highlights the negative portrayal, which could be considered as verging on homophobia. This is closely related to the features of the Southern grotesque, which has become a mode typical for Williams's work. The thesis will largely confirm this view, yet at the same time, it will attempt to find out whether the male homosexual protagonists could be read as queer, i.e. whether they display any features, which would oppose the traditional concept of human sexuality as stable and unchanging. The second chapter will provide the theoretical background of the Southern Grotesque, the specific nature of which stems primarily from the characters, who (for various reasons) do not meet the criteria of normality and thus become misfits excluded from the society. Taking into account the conservative and strongly religious environment of the American South, homosexuality undoubtedly is one of such deviations. To cover the theory of the grotesque fully, the subchapters...
Sacred music in Catholic church choirs in Prague during the 1948-1989 cultural oppression
Stejskal, Zdeněk ; Slavický, Tomáš (referee) ; Novák, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis deals with the history of church music in catholic churches in Prague between 1948- 1989. Church music is viewed as a form of performing art, which is performed during a catholic liturgy. Thus, this music has its specific purpose, since it is almost always produced and perceived during church services. Having this specific function, the church music had been many times in its history influenced by changes of a role of music in the liturgy, as well as by changes in music and musical world. The development of the church music had reflected the relationship between the Catholic Church and liturgy. Simultaneously, in a certain extent the development of church music also reflected relationship between a government and the Catholic Church. These mutual relationships occurred during whole history of church music. In certain historical periods these relationships had been more pronounced, e.g. during a decline of literary confraternities, in the course of development and decline of the orchestral church music, in the Cecillian reform movement, and after the Second Vatican council. The goal of this thesis was to describe the influence of mentioned relationships between music, Catholic Church, and government on the church music performed in churches in Prague during period 1948-1989.
