Occupational burnout in sign language interpreting

In its introductory part, the thesis acquaints the reader with the basic views on the burnout syndrome, with the history of its research, with its causes, symptoms and development. Subsequently, the more endangered professions and the specific factors that affect workers in the given areas are described. It also introduces the basic possibilities of prevention. Mainly, it focuses on the burnout syndrome in the field of social work with an emphasis on the profession of interpreting Czech sign language and its specifics. There are also several diagnostic methods mentioned, along with their possible uses, that are then practically demonstrated in the part of the thesis devoted to previous selected foreign research, that dealt with the issue of the burnout syndrome among workers in this area, their methodology was also the basis for the research part of this bachelor's thesis. The practical part uses its own questionnaire in conjunction with a standardized research tool of the burnout syndrome Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to determine the current situation among Czech sign language interpreters. The findings are quite surprising and the results of the research show that the situation among interpreters is, in fact, far more positive than previously expected. Interpretation of a fairy tale from Czech to Czech Sign Language

This bachelor thesis deals with the description of the differences in the translation of a fairy tale from Czech into Czech sign language realized by one hearing and one deaf interpreter. After a theoretical introduction focused especially on translation and its types, i.e., interpreting and translation, the thesis describes sign language interpreting and artistic interpreting, the specifics of translation for deaf children and Christiane Nord's model of translation analysis. This model is then applied to the initial text - a fairy tale in the Czech language, and two target texts in the Czech sign language. These two texts are compared, and the differences are described in the conclusion of this thesis.

The process of creating an interpreted theatre performance - musical

The aim of this thesis is to describe how theatre performances are currently translated into sign language in the Czech Republic. The student focuses on the process of creating an interpreted musical, specifically the Semafor theatre's production of If A Thousand Clarinets. The thesis describes the entire formation process, from the first production meetings, to translation work, synchronization with the performers, to the final interpreted performance in front of an audience of hearing and deaf spectators. Individual steps in this process are analysed and referenced to Czech and foreign literature. The student mainly focuses on issues we can expect to arise during the process and how they are solved (e.g. language, interpretation, translation, and technical issues). As this is a performance that has been played at Semafor theatre for years, it will also be interesting to see how interpreters feature on stage during the performance for the deaf audience. The comparison of sign language interpreters working at universities in the Czech Republic and in Finland

This bachelor thesis presents a comparative analysis between sign language interpreters' education working at universities in the Czech Republic and Finland. The paper consists of two segments: theory and research. The aim of the theoretical component is to describe the specifics of interpreting at universities based on relevant legislation and sources and to present the educational systems and training possibilities available in both countries. The research is based on a survey among sign language interpreters from the Czech Republic and Finland, which aims to reveal their actual level of education and degree of satisfaction regarding their current professional situation as interpreters at universities and the quality of their own education. The thesis, thus, collates information from the theoretical and research components to analyze and contrast sign language interpreters' education in both countries. Simultaneous Interpreting preparation strategies to/from sign language

This bachelor's thesis focuses on strategies of professional preparation for simultaneous interpreting into/from Czech Sign Language. The first section describes theoretical knowledge related to preparation for simultaneous interpreting. It focuses on mapping the strategies and approaches of short-term preparation for simultaneous interpretation. The research section aims to map real practices in the preparation for simultaneous interpreting by Czech Sign Language interpreters while relating these practices back to the theoretical knowledge of preparation in the academic literature. The findings of this work can be important in the area of professional preparation of Czech Sign Language interpreters. Current Situation of Sign Language Interpreting in Secondary Schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Czech Republic

This bachelor's thesis examines the current situation of interpreting between Czech and Czech Sign Language in the environment of secondary schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, from the viewpoint of interpreters who are currently employed at these schools. The thesis consists of two parts. In the theoretical part, it firstly analyses available Czech and international literature that is related to interpreting between spoken and sign languages in education. Furthermore, the thesis analyses the national and supranational legislation that is related to this issue. Based on this, a study was conducted. This study consisted of two steps. The first step was questionnaire survey, in which interpreters reflected on the situation in their workplace (requirements for taking up employment, further educational support, work responsibilities etc.) and described how they imagine their ideal work conditions. The second step were semi-structured interviews and focused predominantly on continuing education of interpreters and their work responsibilities. Czech sign language vocabulary in a specific area of linguistic terminology

The thesis aims to describe selected signs that describe linguistic terminology in Czech Sign Language. Based on academic literature the first section explains the terminology as a part of the lexicon and the specific position it has in signed languages. The research section presents selected Czech Sign Language signs used for interpreting in the seminar called Contemporary Czech Language I - Morphology in the Deaf Studies programme at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. The formal and semantic motivation of signs is analysed, i.e. the word-formation principles (such as arbitrariness, iconicity, calquing etc.). The signs are then contrasted with their equivalents in Czech - Czech Sign Language linguistic dictionaries. Collected data might serve as a guideline for terminology unification in the field of sign linguistics and in class instruction, as well as in training of new interpreters at the Institute of Deaf Studies, alternatively in instruction of deaf pupils. Czech sign language vocabulary in a specific area of linguistic terminology

The thesis aims to describe selected signs of Czech Sign Language used for linguistic terminology. Based on academic literature the first section explains the terminology as part of the lexicon and the specific position it has in signed languages. The focus is on linguistic terminology used in the Deaf Studies programme at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University including its metalinguistic aspect. The research section presents selected Czech Sign Language signs used for instruction in the Deaf Studies programme. The formal and semantic motivation of signs is analysed, i.e. the word-formation principles (such as arbitrariness, iconicity, calquing etc.). In case of the incidence of two variants, their form and relation is delineated. The research material is comprised of video tapes of native Czech Sign Language user in real class instruction and spoken language instruction interpreted into Czech Sign Language. Collected data might serve as a guideline for terminology unification in the field of sign linguistics and in class instruction, as well as in training of new interpreters at the Institute of Deaf Studies, alternatively in instruction of deaf pupils. English-Czech Sign Language Interpreting at Czech Universities

This bachelor thesis deals with interpretation between the English language and Czech Sign Language in a university environment. The theoretical basis of the thesis defines the necessary terminology and the working languages of the interpreter, and it describes interpreting into an active foreign language and interpreting between two foreign languages, the possibilities of professional preparation and professional employability of interpreters of the English language and Czech Sign Language, as well as online interpreting and its use in university lectures. The research part focuses on a specific interpreting situation, i.e. an online lecture of foreign linguist of sign languages interpreted from the English language to Czech Sign Language. The aim of the research part was to describe a situation in interpreting between the English language and Czech Sign Language in a university environment using structured interviews with open questions conducted with someone who orders an interpretation, a foreign lecturer and interpreters and visitors of a lecture - some of whom were deaf and some of whom were hearing.
