Genius loci and the new urban structure
Fišerová, Markéta ; Erben, Adam (referee) ; Pavlovský, Tomáš (advisor)
The assignment of the diploma thesis is the design of a new city structure and the strengthening of the genius loci in the city of Třebíč. In the 1980s there was a construction of large-capacity bus station together with main road which has led to demoition of multiple original historic building and changing the character of the area. The main idea of the proposal is respecting of the existing structure and especially finding the values and genius loci. The proposal is to gently complete the structure with adding stories and creating new block structure which clearly defines public and private space. The proposal envisages the construction of a southern bypass, which allows the modification of the main roads in the center. Other elements of the design are the discovery, modification of the line and access to the Stařečka stream, reconstruction of the bus station and improvement of pedestrian permeability through the area. The newly designed development is mostly residential in order to increase the density of inhabitants living in the city center and at the same time to limit the expansion of the built-up area by residential development into the landscape.
Prison Story
Štefková, Dominika ; Petermann, Tomáš (referee) ; Kristek, Jan (advisor)
The thesis is a continuation of a pre-diploma project on the stigmatization of buildings and society's perception of buildings that do not have the most pleasant past behind them. The project deals with the question of the new use of the decaying prison in Uherské Hradiště. Through a meaningful program, it seeks to bring the building back to life and incorporate the current 19th century time bubble back into the urban fabric, while not obscuring the grim past of the site. The thesis is a continuation of a pre-diploma project on the stigmatization of buildings and society's perception of buildings that do not have the most pleasant past behind them. It deals with the question of the new use of the decaying building of the former prison in Uherské Hradiště. The project seeks a meaningful program and architectural solution that would bring the building back to life and integrate it back into the urban fabric. The Slovácké Theatre, which operates in Uherské Hradiště, is moving into the building. The Slovácké Theatre is located in the leased space of the former Sokolovna. The big disadvantage of the existing theatre is the small space for its facilities. Workshops and warehouses are not located here at all. In addition, the existing theatre building is located just off a busy road and thus has no space for people to linger after the theatre. On a symbolic level, the theatre is a program that allows the city to deal with the problematic past of the prison building in a lively way. The proposal does not preserve the prison building, it does not "musealize" it. It is not afraid of radical interventions and demolition, which allows not only to harmonize the operation of the theatre with the historical building, but also to make the closed building completely accessible and transparent. Consciously and through architectural design, the object, excluded from society, becomes its own opposite: a social centre accessible to all. A social conscience and a mirror, not a prison, but a theatre. At the same time, the redevelopment does not try to erase the prison past. The remaining fragments of the buildings are left in their rawness, with a clearly legible trace of solitary confinement and a façade in the style of "architecture terrible".

Brno lives on Veveří
Pelka, Filip ; Kaštánková, Jana (referee) ; Františák, Luboš (advisor)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to design new urban planning around the Veveří city street in the section from Konečné náměstí to Mučednická street and to design a multifunctional complex that will help to spatially define this city main street. In this work I focus on the mentioned multifunctional building as one fragment of the Veveří district. Furthermore, I more clearly define the before-space of the MU Faculty of Law and connects Bjornson Park with the proposed multifunctional building through a green street corridor. By adding new functions to the mentioned under-used center, this place becomes more attractive and its potential is used to create a new social life. In particular, there will be space for shops and services, as well as new housing and job opportunities for the people of Brno.
A town-hall in Kopřivnice
Pešková, Klára ; Zdvomka, Ondřej (referee) ; Marek, Jiří (advisor)
Objective of the Master thesis is a design of an adaptation and an activation of townhall building situated in the centre of Kopřivnice town. Location of the project is a site of trapezoidal shape slightly tilted towards railways on Štefánikova street. The design aspires to create a sufficient working space for townhall employees and at the same time to produce a space suitable for living, work and activities sought-after by a younger generation especially. Design of the multifunctional house offers start-up and communal housing (so called co-living) of 1+kk to 4+kk dispositions and a coworking space. The townhall’s layout is designed according to current trends in public administration with emphasis on openness, hospitability and consideration to citizens. Multi-purpose hall, completing the entire design, is above all supposed to serve as citizen assembly tool. Parking is provided by a current parking lot and a parking house. Design of the spatial layout creates static composition of buildings, which completes the distinctive townhall construction.
Breda, the old department store
Mlýnková, Petra ; Mašek, Radomír (referee) ; Marek, Jiří (advisor)
ABSTRACT The diploma thesis project deals, as its name suggests, with a former department store, so called „The old Breda“, which was built between 1927-28 in the then capital of Austrian Silesia, the Opava City. The department store is an architectural masterpiece, you will hardly find another department store of this kind in the whole of former Czechoslovakia. In 1972, it was declared a cultural monument. Today, we can understand it as an accurate testimony to what the city of Opava was a hundred years ago, how it has gradually changed and what it is like today. The building and its fate is also a frequently mentioned topic for the Opavans themselves, as the building itself reminds them of pleasant feelings and memories of the experience of its space. In this context, the central space under the dome, illuminated by glass-concrete blocks, is often inflected by people. Together with stained glass windows, lighted display cases and the creaking wooden steps of a large staircase, it offers visitors a truly unique atmosphere and moment. The reason why the building itself leaves a strong trace of nostalgia in each person is quite obvious and indisputable. It is a building of immense architectural quality, which the Silesian native from Krnov, known as the Viennese architect Leopold Bauer, offers to the local people through his work. Although there is no doubt that Bauer was a genius in his field, which I was able to see again and again during my research, we must not forget the fact that the whole project was possible to happen only thanks to the wealth and initiative of David Weinstein, businessman and owner of Breda & Weinstein company. However, Weinstein did not enjoy the building and its fame for very long and if you look at the time, the place and context and the fact that Weinstein was of Jewish descent, you will find out the reason why. The cruel fate thus befell his family, as did almost all Jews at the time (not only) in Opava. In 1945, during the Ostrava-Opava operation, Opava was almost completely reduced to ashes, and after the war, there were this time Germans who were to be completely expelled from Czechoslovakia. At that time, the building was called German because Breda and Weinstein spoke German. This was followed by privatization and the associated further changes in the property and also layout of the building. In 1994, in addition to the misfortune, the building was acquired „for sale“ by the local bussinesman Kolek, which meant a way to Breda to complete destruction. There was even a fire, which blackened the dome‘s otherwise light concrete. Since 2012, when the house was closed and taken out of operation, it has only fallen into disrepair. It was also in insolvency proceedings. However, in the eyes and hearts of the proud Opavans, the building still leaves strong recognition and feelings that did not allow the building to be abandoned, people put pressure on the politicians from the city for a long time, until in December 2021 the ciity approved the purchase of the building. However, this step opened up more and more questions and problems. Nobody knows what to do now. There is no intention. It is only clear that the reconstruction will be very costly. With my work based on analyzes from the last semester and studying the data of available research, I try to show the city how it could handle the building.

The service building Kotovo, built between 1970s and 1980s of the previous century, is situated to the south from the city center of Vsetin, in the city part Rokytnice. The building stands at the beginning of the housing estate tight-close to tower blocks. Two floored object in a U form consists of three standalone blocks, that is A, B and C part. Nowadays, Kotovo is used for a variety of services and markets, such as grocery shops, dentist office, post office or children’s library. The city of Vsetin is fully aware of the state of Kotovo and plans to reconstruct the building. First part of the diploma thesis analyses specifics of this space, deals with connecting the object to its surroundings, defines its possible functioning utilization, and above all it finds meaningful vision for the future reconstructions. The goal of the diploma thesis is to tie in to the areas draft potential, make and architectural concept for the whole area and then design one of the buildings. The thesis should work as a vision and the foundation document for the future reconstruction.
So the kids have place to be ashamed of us
Peřina, Jan ; Maršíková, Hana (referee) ; Mléčka, Jan (advisor)
The work aims to design an environmentally responsible school in a specific situation according to the innovative education principles focused on forest schools. The work reacts to the absence of forest schools in the Kroměříž region and offers an alternative to regular education systems and the regular appearance of the schools. The proposal is applied in Kroměříž. I design interventions in fore locations with different spatial characteristics. The interventions evolve existing features and characteristics of the location or make the accessible. Those interventions should be used not only for education but also for the locals.
