The impact of Brexit on the activity of banks: 2013-2021 country by country reporting data
Hatalová, Lucia Mária ; Janský, Petr (advisor) ; Sivá, Soňa (referee)
The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union marks one of the most important events in recent history. The consequences of Brexit, particularly the loss of passporting rights in the services sector, have had severe adverse effects on British trade because it created barriers and challenges for British businesses to access the EU market and vice versa. This thesis aims to contribute to the existing literature on the impact of Brexit on financial ser- vices, specifically focusing on the banking sector. I use the country-by-country reporting data spanning from 2013 to 2021 to investigate the activity of 44 Eu- ropean banks. Using the turnover of the banks as a substitute for measuring banking activity, I estimate the gravity model employing the PPML and OLS estimators. The results indicate a negative effect of 24% on the turnover of British banks abroad relative to the domestic turnover. This suggests that the loss of pass- porting rights and the subsequent regulatory changes decreased the international operations of UK-based banks. In contrast, EU-based banks experienced 30% higher turnover in partner countries than domestically. 1

Blockchain-based DeFi lending: A challenge to traditional finance?
Knížek, Ondřej ; Pečená, Magda (advisor) ; Hronec, Martin (referee)
The goal of the thesis is to identify the factors that determine the default rate of the loans, with a particular focus on the pioneering research of blockchain-based decentralised loans. The thesis describes blockchain technology, its development, and functions, introduces decentralised finance (DeFi), and examines its advantages and challenges. The thesis's analytic part compares DeFi loans and peer-to-peer loans as an alternative to the traditional financial system. The blockchain-based DeFi loans realized through lending Compound are analysed by a logit model that predicts liquidation rate and examines if it is possible to perform the prediction without any information about the borrower due to the complete anonymity in DeFi lending. To illustrate the difference, the data from the Czech peer-to-peer lending platform Zonky was used to set up two logit models. While the first model uses all available variables, the second model is based only on loan-related variables to achieve a more precise comparison to DeFi loans. Results revealed several statistically significant determinants of default rate in the case of all three models. While the results of the Compound model cannot be compared with the existing literature, the default rate determinants in the case of peer-to-peer loans confirm the...
Modern Banking and Preference Channels
Regináč, Jozef ; Ryska, Pavel (advisor) ; Pečená, Magda (referee)
Financial markets are nowadays more important than ever. Financial crisis of the previous decade demonstrated their power to influence stability of the whole economy. Since the consensus blames weak regulation and considers the only solution to be its extension, this thesis tries to provide the proof of existence of other options. The focus is firstly aimed at the weaknesses of the fractional reserve banking, which does not follow the basic legal principles of a deposit contract. This practice results in price fluctuations and favoritism of first takers of newly created money. Moreover, the thesis develops a new method of analysis, which emphasizes the application of preferences in exchanges. Important outcome of this method is the demonstration that the public does not have to always prefer the most evolved form of institution. All institutions within commercial banks are then analyzed with the use of this method and the thesis shows where preference channels are being interfered with. This analysis also reveals another outcome of fractional reserve banking, which is that the newly created money is only used according to the preferences of commercial bankers. We suggest that circumvention of the true nature of a deposit contract leads to a similar outcome in loan banking, where funds gathered by loan...
