Annotated translation: Nación Vacuna from Fernanda García Lao, 2020 (Selected parts).

This thesis consists of two parts. The first, practical part is a translation of the first eight chapters of the book Nación Vacuna by the contemporary Argentinian writer Fernanda García Lao (2020). The second part of the thesis offers background information about the author, stylistic classification of the book and its role in both, the source and target cultural context. Another important part of this work is the translation analysis of the original, the description of the origin of the translation method, as well as the identification of the problems associated with the translation along with their solutions. Last but not least, the thesis should also offer the reader a brief glimpse into the process of the birth of translated literature. This bachelor thesis consists of the translation of a German written text alongside a commentary of this translation. The translated text is a scientific article from sinologist Mareile Flitsch, called "Vor dem »Auge der Schwiegermutter« Zur materiellen Alltagskultur der Frauen im ländlichen Nord- und Nordost-China", from the book "Frauenleben im traditionellen China: Grenzen und Möglichkeiten einer Rekonstruktion". The article deals with the material culture of everyday women's life in the countryside of China and its possibility of reconstruction. A large part of the text is devoted to the "kang" phenomenon. So called "kang" is a platform of brick, clay or concrete built across one side or end of a room in a house in northern China, warmed by a fire beneath, and used for sleeping and daily household chores. The commentary is comprised of two parts. The first part is the translation analysis of the text, which is in turn based on Christine Nord's analysis. The second part addresses individual translation problems, methods, and shifts. The bachelor thesis consists of a translation of the original German text and an expert commentary. The source text is an excerpt from the book Landhäuser: Zeitgemäß wohnen, nachhaltig bauen by the German author Melanie Breuer. This publication focuses on selected sustainable housing projects. The expert commentary consists of a translation analysis of the source text according to Christiane Nord's model, a translation method, a typology of translation problems and shifts. The aim of the paper is a functional translation and a commentary on the translation solutions.
Interpreting in Spain: a Historical and Educational Perspective using Conference Interpreting as an Example

This diploma thesis is of theoretical-descriptive nature and its main aim is to describe the historical development of conference interpreting in Spain, as well as its current situation in the country. The main focus is on interpreting for the European institutions and on education of conference interpreters in the country. After brief introduction into conference interpreting from a global point of view, we focus on the origins of conference interpreting in Spain - interpreting for the United Nations, the first professional associations of conference interpreters and the first university centres that offered courses in conference interpreting. Follows the topic of current options of training in conference interpreting, as well as an analysis of courses at member universities at the EMCI (European Masters in Conference Interpreting) consortium, which are subsequently compared with the Institute of Translation studies in Prague and its EMCI specialization module. The history of interpreting for the European institutions, as well as the history of Spain and Spanish in the European Union is also described and the current situation in the Spanish booth of the European Commission is characterized, taking into consideration the ongoing Spanish presidency in the Council of the EU. This bachelor thesis consists of a translation of a German text and an expert commentary. The source text was the article 25 Jahre Friedliche Revolution in der DDR: Die Selbstbefreiung der Ostdeutschen von der Diktatur written by Andreas Trampe. The text discusses the revolutionary events in the German Democratic Republic and other European countries and the subsequent reunification of Germany. The commentary consists of an analysis of the source text, the translation method and a typology of translation problems and shifts. The aim of the thesis is to produce a functional translation and to present translation problems and their solutions.
Training of professional interpreters in the Czech Republic

This master's thesis deals with the education of professional interpreters in the Czech Republic, their association in Czech professional organizations and their further self-development. It focuses on the further (self-)education of interpreters after their interpreting studies. It explores how interpreters maintain their linguistic knowledge and interpreting competences and how they continue their education in business skills, which are often necessary for the interpreting profession. It provides a more comprehensive overview of electronic resources and speech databases that can be used to train interpreting and language skills; events, lectures, courses, and professional groups that can be attended. It also gives an overview of blogs and podcasts that can be used to improve not only interpreting but also business skills, regardless of language combination. The empirical part includes an evaluation of a questionnaire survey of Czech professional interpreters, focusing on whether they are members of Czech professional organizations, how they maintain their interpreting skills and language proficiency, and to what extent they are educated in other (business) areas related to interpreting work. This bachelor thesis includes a translation of four chapters of the book Veganismus written originally in German by Christian Koeder in 2014 and a commentary. The book aims at providing a complete overview of veganism, with the author presenting motives for a vegan lifestyle, possible health consequences of an unbalanced plant-based diet as well as animal rights movements. The following chapters have been chosen for this thesis: Tierliebe, Schadstoffe, Allergien and Ersetzen. The commentary consists of a potential fictional commission, a translation analysis of the source text, a translation strategy and the description of translation problems and translation shifts. The theoretical part is supported by examples from both the source text and the translation. This book delves into the topic of houseplant care and their benefits on health. The commentary is comprised of a pre-translation analysis based on the looping model of Christiane Nord, a proposed translation method, a typology of translation problems and a summary of translation approaches, shifts and changes.
