Analysis of Student's Internships and Voluntary Interpreting at the Institute of Translation Studies, Charles University

This thesis contains the analysis of student's interpreting internships and voluntary interpreting in the period between 1990 and 2018, with the focus on the Institute of Interpreting Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University. The thesis includes an overview of the theoretical literature devoted to this topic, a statistical analysis of the data on the internships held between 1990 and 2019, which was extracted from the reports written by the students as well as the analysis of the students' comments regarding their internships. The thesis examines the trends in the field of student interpreting internships, their chronological evolution as well as the personal opinions of participating students. The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the translation of chosen chapters of the book Le Parfum by the French author Jean-Claude Ellena, famous creator of parfumes. The translated parts deal with the process of creating a parfum and working with aroma substances. The second part comprises the translation commentary which consists of the translation analysis of the source text by translatologist Christiane Nord, the method of translation, the list of translation problems and their solutions. The aim of the thesis is to elaborate the functionally equivalent and to focus on the translation commentary.
Materials for developing interpreting skills

This thesis focuses on materials for developing interpreting skills. Its objective is to explore existing materials and conduct an in-depth analysis of several of them. It focuses on the Czech production but also partially examines Slovak publications. First, the theoretical part outlines the basic terms and concepts: interpreter training, interpreting competencies and skills, instructional materials. Then the empirical part presents the actual research, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods. An overview of currently available materials, mainly Czech, and partly also Slovak, is compiled, with a brief description of each of them. This is followed by an in-depth analysis based on the investigated parameters (trained competence, activity, possibility to perform the exercise independently, possibility of variation, only one correct solution, role of speed). This section traces what is characteristic of the exercises from three selected publications. The results of the analysis suggest which exercise books are likely to be more suitable for self-study and which for use in the classroom. This thesis can serve as a practical resource for authors of new publications, as well as for those interested in interpreting who are looking for appropriate resources for practicing interpreting skills.
The role and status of court interpreters in France

This theoretical-empirical diploma thesis addresses the role and position of court interpreters in France and is divided into two parts. The theoretical part consists of two sections. The first focuses on professional literature on court interpreting and, marginally, court translation. The second section deals with court interpreting and translation in France, comparing selected aspects to the situation in the Czech Republic. The topic is introduced by way of a short outline of the history of court translation and interpreting in France. The empirical part is presented as a complementary quantitative study. Participants in the survey were court interpreters cooperating with courts of appeal in France whose working languages are Czech and French. The aim of the empirical part was to specify certain vague regulations that define the conditions for the appointment of court interpreters, proving of professional experience that the interpreter has gained over a three-year trial period, the number and form of training courses that the interpreter must attend. Case Study on Multimodality in Simultaneous Interpreting

This thesis deals with nonverbal communication in simultaneous interpreting in booths. In the theoretical section, the relevant existing knowledge regarding nonverbal communication is presented from a general standpoint, focusing mainly on the issue of gestures. This is followed by an analysis of nonverbal communication in connection with simultaneous interpreting. The empirical section includes a case study. Its implementation is based on Elena Zagar Galvão's dissertation Speech and gesture in the booth - A descriptive approach to multimodality in simultaneous interpreting (2009) and applied to French-Czech material. Recordings were made of selected interpreters during simultaneous interpreting which were subsequently analysed. Here, the focus was directly geared toward the use of gestures and their copying. Furthermore, this section contains an analysis of the questionnaires that the interpreters answered after the interpretation. The results of this case study show that a several selected gestures were indeed influenced by the speaker, but overall, the interpreters tended not to imitate the gestures. KISS: Interpreter's strategy during the interpreting into the mother tongue and into the B language

This thesis focuses on the topic of the KISS strategy ("Keep it short and simple") as a hypothetical ideal solution for simultaneous interpreting into the active language. The purpose of this theoretical and empirical study is to describe the issue of interpreting into the active language (B language) and the strategies used in simultaneous interpreting, with emphasis on the KISS strategy. The paper is divided into two parts: theoretical part and empirical part. In the theoretical part, we set up the working hypothesis that we will confirm or disprove in the empirical part. We suppose that the KISS strategy is the ideal and predominant mechanism used for interpreting into the B language. The "retour" or interpretation into the active foreign language presents one of the most discussed topics on the field of interpretation theory. For a long time, Western Europe has been under the influence of the Interpretive Theory of Translation based at the ESIT in Paris. The Interpretive Theory of Translation was followed by many theoreticians and practicians who considered the "retour" to be a non-standard or even inadmissible direction of interpreting. The situation changed after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the onset of the globalization, and the interpretation into the B language has gradually become an everyday...

This bachelor thesis comprises two parts. The first part introduces an original translation of the first chapter from a book entitled La danse, Des Ballets russes à l'avant-garde by the Swiss author Jean-Pierre Pastori. The translated text deals with the beginnings of modern dance in the historical context of the first three decades of the 20th century. The second part of the thesis consists of a commentary on the translated text and is further divided into two parts: a translation analysis of source text, pointing out the characteristics of the original, and a typologically composed list of translation problems with their respective solutions and eventual translation shifts. The basic premise of this thesis is to present a translation that is functionally equivalent to the source text and provide the said translation with a translation commentary. A copy of the source text that is subject to the translation is included as attachment to the thesis.

Self-correction as an Indicator of Quality Assessment in Simultaneous Interpreting from Spanish into Czech

This theoretical-empirical thesis deals with the quality assessment of simultaneous interpreters done by clients not familiar with the original speech, with special regard to self-correction. The aim of this thesis is to find out what effect self-correction has on listeners who are not familiar with the content of the original speech. At the same time, the thesis tries to shed light on the influence of stress on self-correction and it wants to reveal if being under stress leads to a lower level of self-correction, or if it stimulates the interpreters. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the simultaneous interpretation in general, working conditions of a simultaneous interpreter, self-correction and it shows some of the previous investigations in the field of quality assessment of simultaneous interpreting. Also, the thesis investigates various factors that influence simultaneous interpretation and it presents mistakes typology. The empirical part of the study describes the experiment with students interpreting simultaneously from Spanish into Czech and it presents the results obtained via questionnaire surveys.
