The object of this bachelor thesis is to translate the first chapter called A history of seduction from Mark Tungate's Fashion brands: branding style from Armani to Zara and to describe theoretically the process. The thesis is comprised of three fundamental parts - translation, commentary and the attached source text. The commentary is divided into four parts. The first one contains an analysis of the source text for the purpose of translation, the second part describes the selected translation method and the relation between the translated text and the original communication situation. The third part of the commentary comprises typology of the problems that occurred during the process of translation and the last part describes the necessary shifts that have been made in the translation.
Differentiation of characters in translated TV series

In my thesis I compare the Czech dubbed version of an American TV series with its original version and explore the differences in predisposition for viewers' concretization of social and ethnic background of the characters. In the beginning of the theoretical part I present basic information about The Nanny (Czech: Chůva k pohledání), the sitcom I chose to analyze in the empirical part of my thesis. I then proceed to sum up some basic ideas relevant to my task, especially a number of observations about the theory of audiovisual texts and their translation, the practice of dubbing in the Czech Republic, and specific features of sitcom as a subgenre of the TV series genre. Then I describe the Character Genesis model by Jiří Levý, the concept of Stylistic Equivalence and Shifts of Expression by Anton Popovič, and the System of Expression by František Miko. These are the cornerstones of my analytical model, which I use in the empirical part of my thesis. In the end of the theoretical part I outline the language situation of English and Czech and attempt to present an inventory of linguistic structures that can indicate the social and ethnic background of the person that uses them. The aim of this thesis is to provide a translation of a section from Philippe Legrain's lmmigrants: Your Country Needs Them and a commentary of the translation. The commentary contains four parts. The first part is a translation analysis, which consists of an analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors and describes the specific qualities of the source text. The second part provides a typology of translation problems, describing linguistic and cultural non-equivalence and defending the translator's solutions. The third part is a typology of shifts occuring in the translation. The commentary is concluded by the description of the translation method.
A four-part song of modern man. Czech translations of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"

This thesis analyzes Czech translations of Walt Whitman's poetry, especially of his central poem, Song oj Myself. The main aim of the paper is to provide translation analyses of all four complete Czech translations. Some fragmentary translations are also mentioned, and a basic overview of Czech secondary literature on Whitman's work is provided. The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One describes Whitman's life and work in the context of his time, as portrayed in secondary literature. lt concentrates on features reflected in the text of Song oj Myself, including literary influences and censorship that influenced the work. It also sets out a hypothesis of possible censorship influences on the single translations. Chapter One continues with a detailed analysis of mam structural features of Whitman's poetry, as reflected in Song oj Myself. The features are contextualized with the main literary theories of the time and with Whitman's individua! aesthetics. The structural features are sorted according to linguistic levels they belong to. Czech translation of dialects in feature films and TV series

The thesis studies Czech dubbing of Misfits and Futurama TV series with special attention to the method of translation of regional varieties of English. The first part summarizes the latest theoretical approach to translation of marginal varieties in dubbing and literature. This overview is followed by an analysis of language varieties used in the original series and their dubbed versions in order to define their role and function. The second part of the thesis examines decision-making processes employed in the process of translation of the regional varieties and presents the results of a survey of spectators' opinion on the translation method employed. Based on the survey results we compared spectators' evaluation of the original series with their evaluation of the dubbed versions, as well as markings of characters using regional varieties with markings of those using standard language. Last but not least, markings of the dubbed versions in the regions where the variety in question is spoken were compared with markings of these versions in the rest of the Czech Republic. The aim of the comparisons was to get an overview of recipients' opinions on the method of translation applied.

The aim of this thesis is to translate the chapter The birth of an industry written by Douglas Bruster for the publication The Cambridge History of British Theatre. This thesis further contains a commentary of the translation. The first part of the commentary is devoted to translation analysis of the original text, the second part concentrates on description of the translation problems and their solutions. This thesis is concluded by a typology of translation shifts.
Translation criticism in Czech periodicals 1960-2006 with focus on prose and poetry translated

The thesis looks into the status of Czech translation criticism in the period from the 1960s until the year 2005. Research is based on articles evaluating pro se and poetry translations from English that appeared in Czech literary journals in the period under discussion. In addition, the thesis gathers together relevant findings of Czech and Slovak translation studies, and particular contributions to translation 'meta-criticism' (i.e. criticisms of trans lati on criticism). Throughout the period under examination, critiques of prose and poetry translations from English appeared in around twenty literary joumals. In chapter 2, these periodicals are described in terms of their interest in translation issues and translation criticism in particular. Chapter 3 gives an account of the development of translation criticism with focus on the relevant critiques and shows the changes that the frequency and style of translation criticism underwent. For this purpose, critical articles are divided into four categories according to the length and profundity of the analyses employed. Oscar Wilde's fairy tales in three Czech translations

This thesis analyzes three Czech translations of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales from the critical perspective of a contemporary reader, focusing on translations currently available on the Czech market. It compares the 1981 translation by Jiří Zdeněk Novák (published in 2007 as an audiobook), the 1985 translation by Radoslav Nenadál (republished in 2006) and the latest, 1994 translation by Markéta Cukrová (newly published in 2007). The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part sets the targets of the dissertation and provides an important background for the second part: it briefly summarizes relevant research carried out to date, introduces Oscar Wilde's life and literary career and considers the fairy tale genre in general, before discussing in more detail Wilde's own fairy tales, setting them in the context of the fairy-tale work of other Victorian writers and pointing out the characteristic feature and function of fairy stories in that period - social criticism. Sam Shepard: Buried Child

One of the reasons for writing this thesis was to help readers and theatregoers better understand Shepard's plays and to let them see, at least partly, his intentions. Yet, to ask for a straightforward explanation or an unambiguous ending would mean to completely misunderstand the author. Samuel Shepard the playwright, actor, director, screenwriter, poet and musician as well as a cowboy and shaman - "a New World shaman" - is anything but a piece of cake. To know this much might be enough unless you plan to translate or direct one of his plays. And for these very purposes, I have decided to prepare a roadmap for understanding Samuel Shepard Rogers III. My goal was to show three main influences that helped to form Shepard's style. First, we will travel with young Sam eastwards all the way to New York in order to discover a brave new world. Only fifteen years later, we will set the sails in the same direction again, this time to accompany an unheard-off success - an Off-Off- Broadway show moving from San Francisco to New York to be eventually awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Unfortunately, this child prodigy we came with is dying; indeed, it is already a Buried Child. After twenty more years, Shepard will revise the text and claim that "it's now a better play".
