Designing holidays in the Polish People's Republic: socialist modernism in Ustroń Zawodzie holiday complex.1967-1990
Ciupka, Maria ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Veress, Dániel (referee)
in English This master's thesis proposes a study of the history of architecture of Ustroń- Zawodzie, a recreation complex in the Silesian Beskid mountains in Southwest Poland, constructed under the auspices of the socialist government in the 1960s and 1970s in the Polish People's Republic. The paper examines the architects' sketches, projects, and selected materials from architectural journals and Polish media to investigate the role these representations play in the more comprehensive process of the production of space in the Beskid mountains in Upper Silesia. First, the Ustroń-Zawodzie's rich history is situated in the global and local contexts of leisure and leisure architecture developments in the 1960s and 1970s, emphasizing the emergence of leisure and leisure architecture in the Polish People's Republic as processes that developed in parallel to other post-war European states. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre's theory of the production of space and recent approaches to architectural research, a two-level framework for analysis is established. The first level of this framework aims to identify the conditions of possibility for the construction of Ustroń- Zawodzie. In contrast, the second level investigates how the Ustroń-Zawodzie space is produced through its representations. The analysis of...
Sintra in the Twentieth Century European Narratives: Otherness and Identity
Garcia Pereira Oliveira, Cláudia ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
in English This thesis is based on an analysis of 20th century narratives about Sintra, Portugal. The narratives are present in travelogues, guidebooks, flyers, and postcards. Regarding travel literature, this study has confronted and compared 20th century foreign accounts about Sintra with national ones. The analysis includes both otherness and identity perspectives of the place, allowing the thesis to better understand the identity of the landscape of Sintra. The descriptions in travel literature or in visual sources about Sintra represent a specific mixture of cultural and natural elements - tangible and intangible heritage, and natural heritage. This combination results in the representation of Sintra's places of memory, and of its Cultural Landscape. The narratives in this research address various subthemes within larger themes of man, nature, and their mutual relation. The themes are translated into Sintra's cultural and natural heritage, merged with poetic discourses that create poetic narratives based on both cultural and natural elements. The themes thus enable the deconstruction of Sintra's Cultural Landscape and, once assembled into a single narrative, converge into a representation of the landscape, that is, an image of the place in the 20th century. Keywords: Sintra 20th century...

Hatapçı, Ali ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
This study is based on the relationship between the Kurds and the Left in Turkey between 1960s and 1990 in Turkey. The question of identity is discussed in terms of the continuities and ruptures in the discourse(s) of the Left in Turkey on the 'eastern question' and 'Kurdish (national) question' in this period. The main question of the research is how the Kurdish identity was constructed in the discourses of Yön, TKSP (Türkiye Kürdistanı Sosyalist Partisi - Turkish Kurdistan Socialist Party), and the PKK (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê - Kurdistan Workers' Party). Three sample publications/organizations representative of the leftist discourse in the period were selected to show the Left's treatment of the Kurdish question by using periodical publications, memoirs, clandestine organizational documents and through discourse analysis.

Rudová, Lenka ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kubišová, Vlasta (referee) ; Verdier, Nicolas (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
in English This Master's Thesis deals with guidebooks about Paris published in France, Czechoslovakia and the United States of America between the years 1918-1939. It analyses how the French capital city is presented in the guidebooks and how far the representation differs according to the country of publishing. The first two chapters deal with the modern history of tourism up until the interwar period and with the formation of major collections of guidebooks. The following chapters use a comparative perspective to analyse three major aspects of tourist guidebooks about Paris: itineraries; recommended places and monuments (the so-called "must- sees"); and global images of Paris. The analysis reveals that the country of publishing had only a limited impact on the content of the guidebooks; rather, the books largely respected established rules and patterns within the genre. Key words: tourism, guidebook, Paris, interwar period, representation, image of the city Résumé en français Ce mémoire de master analyse des guides touristiques de Paris publiés en France, en Tchécoslovaquie et aux États-Unis entre 1918 et 1939. Savoglu, Mustafa ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee) ; Sherman, Tamah (referee)
As a multilingual and multicultural island, Cyprus has been segregated based on religion, identities, communities, and nationalities. In 1974, this segregation became a physical division of the island. After twenty-nine years of division, in 2003 April 23rd , the borders or in other words, the check-points were opened, and the two biggest communities of the island; Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, have been put in contact again. The phenomenon that the both communities were put in contact again also brought the question of language along with. This thesis investigates the evolution of the language policies and planning (LPP) in Cyprus. This research has found that since the beginning of the first crossings, English language has been functioning as Lingua franca, and being spread across the divide. Rozsypal Pajerová, Anna ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Ira, Jaroslav (referee)
(in English): This diploma thesis examines Scandinavian countries at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and the changes behind the Napoleonic wars. This study is interdisciplinary and combines history, geo-policy, cultural and area studies. The main attention is dedicated to Norway, which has been in Union with Denmark since the 14th century, but not at an equal position. Danish support of the emperor Napoleon and the Danish affiliation to the Continental blockade caused a famine in Norway, which led to society-wide changes. By the fall of Napoleon Denmark was defeated likewise and must have signed the Kiel Treaty that gave Norway to Sweden. However, the Swedish-Norwegian union was created ten months after, because the Norwegians claimed independence, summoned the parliament, created the constitution and chose the king. Using three different perspectives (cultural, social-economical and historic-political), this diploma analyses the background of the Nordic events, explore reasons for actors' behaviour and examines the determinations of Nordic countries behind these historic occasions. The study uses the framework of Miroslav Hroch's national-build theory and inspects if the Norwegian national-build process reached the level of mass movements and accomplished the conditions to become an...

Mazur, Ekaterina ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Pýcha, Čeněk (referee) ; Klement, Judit (referee)
Representation of heritage via digital and online tools gains more attention from culture professionals and the general public. Mobile applications allow museums to reach wider audiences, make heritage more accessible for people with special needs and provide content in various forms. Catholic cathedrals, being the sites with great tourism potential and rich historical and cultural legacy, also create their mobile applications in several languages. This research aims to answer the question of how mobile applications contribute to the representation of the heritage of religious sites. The case studies are the mobile applications of Notre-Dame, Milan, Florence and Cologne cathedrals. The visual and textual content and the design of the applications are analyzed to explore how heritage meets religious and secular needs. As a result, it was possible to identify patterns used by the cathedrals' management and application developers when generating religious heritage content in this technologic framework. Besides, practical suggestions on improvement of the technical layout and narrative practices are made. Keywords: religious heritage, heritage representation, mobile applications, digital museum, tourism, museum communication, UNESCO 2
