The role of history in nation-centred social scientists texts from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century: Masaryk, Unamuno, Dmowski, Gökalp
Scholz, Milan ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Řezník, Miloš (referee)
The thesis deals with the comparative analysis of the role of history in four nation - centred works from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The complex of analyzed works includes three texts of T. G. Masaryk concerning the so called 'Czech question' - Ceská otázka [Czech Question], Naše nynejší krize [Our Contemporary Crisis], Jan Hus [Jan Hus], Unamuno's book En torno al casticismo, Dmowski's Mysli nowoczesnego Polaka [Thoughts of Modern Pole] and Gökalp's Türkçülüün esaslar [The Foundations of Turkism]. The structural and thematic similarity was the main criterion for the choice of these texts. All texts deal with the problem of 'national existence', combine the features of works in social sciences with the ideological element and use history and historical examples for the construction of national programme. The thesis looks for the similarities and differences in the use of history and in the role of history in constructing national programmes in the analysed texts, and tries to define their typology. Furthermore the treatise examines the relation between the degree of modernization and the political position of respective society (dominant, non - dominant) on one hand and the way of using historical examples on the other. The thesis is divided in five chapters. The first...
The Balkans between Europe and Orient. Image of the Balkans in the Czech and French popularizing journalism (1875-1914)
Sobotková, Hana ; Hroch, Miroslav (advisor) ; Řezník, Miloš (referee) ; Moravcová, Mirjam (referee)
The following work is, in general area, focusing on questions of cultural history of 19th and 20th century - mainly to the questions of cultural stereotypes and identities. In the spirit of modern methodological approaches towards studies of history, it presents the comparison of image of Balkan in Czech and French popular science journalism at the turning point of 19th and 20th centuries. The concrete target of the study is to find out what was the image of so called Balkan peninsula, that was offered to the well educated Czech and French public in the sources (mainly magazines) of non-fiction character in between 1875 and 1914. Comparison of Czech and French view of the Balkan represents an attempt for comparison of points of views of the two different cultural and historical environments. The Czech perspective is the view of a "small" (non-state) nation, which was in the given time making an attempt for a cultural and national emancipation in the frame of multinational empire. On the other side is the French perspective of a "big" (state) nation, which has been, at the turning point of the 19th and 20th century, a cultural, political and colonial power. The aspect of methodology of this work is inspired by the modern methodological approaches focused on studying cultural stereotypes and identities. The...
The historian W. W. Tomek and his importance in Czech historiography.
Pazderský, Roman ; Beneš, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Jiroušek, Bohumil (referee) ; Řezník, Miloš (referee)
Roman PAZDERSKÝ, The Historian W. W. Tomek and His Importance in the Czech Historiography, dissertation thesis, FF UK, Prague 2019 This dissertation thesis is an attempt to thoroughly evaluate the significance of the Czech historian Wácslaw Wladiwoj Tomek (1818-1905) for Czech historiography. The basic methodological assumption of the work is the belief that the meaning of Tomek's intellectual contribution can be adequately understood only on the basis of the broader contexts of his life and work, which are perceived in his integral interconnection with the corresponding social, political and cultural contexts of the history of the Czech society in the 19th century. The introductory chapters provide a detailed overview of the sources and literature on the subject, including the discussion of W. W. Tomek's present reflections in a wider rather than narrow historiographical space. The essential part of the introduction is the subchapter Czech Historiography as a Research Topic, aiming to find a suitable conceptualization key for competent reflections on the changes of the Czech historiography of the 19th century on the background of relevant social and historical contexts. The following chapter, titled "Long Life in a Short Impression," presents a clear outline of Tomek 's life, whose aim is not to...
Local and National Identity in Historical Monographs on Bohemian, Moravian and Galician Towns (1860-1900)
Ira, Jaroslav ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Štaif, Jiří (referee) ; Řezník, Miloš (referee)
The dissertation thesis deals with urban historical monographs that were published in 1860-1900 in Czech, German, and Polish language, and covered towns in Bohemia, Moravia, and Galicia. Adopting a broadly comparative perspective, the study focuses on the social dimension of the books through the lens of local and national identities. It presupposes that the urban histories essentially created local identities but at the same time makes a hypothesis that nationalization of society in the 19th century had significant impact on local urban history. The first chapter shows that the urban historiography in each of the regional-language spheres developed unevenly. One of the reasons was the different significance of towns and urban past in national thoughts. The following chapter analyses urban monographs as books. It poses questions about who wrote urban histories, with what intentions, and for what readership. It reveals that the books had essentially two roles: they served local purposes and at the same time they were integrated in the national programme The two remaining chapters deal with the analysis of historical representations. The fourth chapter compares urban histories with regard to periodization of urban past. It confirms that the national historical frame significantly influenced the ways...
