Seasonal variation of the territorial behaviour of the European beaver (Castor fiber L.).
Kadlecová, Hana ; Horáček, Ivan (advisor) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
The presented thesis deals with the temporal and spatial changes in activity of the European beaver (Castor fiber L.) during different seasons. Basic dataset was obtained by continuous telemetric monitoring of selected individuals in years 2008 and 2009 in two different geographical areas, namely in the Bohemian forest and in southern Moravia. The scope of the thesis was to record, evaluate and interpret the behavior of European beaver during the year. I focused myself especially on the beginning and end of activity in relation to incidence of sunrise and sunset, duration of stay in the field, changes in the size of actively-used area and time-duration and length of the movement. In cases where there were more active individuals monitored within the studied area, I also watched for their mutual interaction. In statistical analysis of gained data I also took into account the sex and age of the individuals. Beaver's behavior varies during the year. They are most active in spring and autumn, while in winter their activity decreases significantly. This observation is valid not only for the time duration and length of movement trajectories, but also for the size of actively-used area. The beginning of activity is strongly correlated with the sunset, while the end does not show any correlation with...
Sociální vztahy a synchronizace ve stádech přežvýkavců - vliv na pastevní chování
Šárová, Radka ; Špinka, Marek (advisor) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee) ; Nekovářová, Tereza (referee)
This thesis addresses the relationships between beef cattle (Bos taurus) group behaviour on pasture, social dominance and individual characteristics such as body weight and age. The thesis is based on three studies performed in a herd of female beef cattle. In the first two studies, GPS collars were used as the main data-collection method, while the third study relied on an extensive dataset of cow dominance relationships. The first study focused on activity synchronization. We assessed whether cows similar to each other in body weight or in reproductive status were more synchronized and whether the timing of activity switches was determined by specific leading animals. We found that the body weight difference in a dyad of animals had a negative influence on their mutual synchronization. There were no leading animal initiating switches in activity. The second study focused on the role of dominant animals in group movements of the herd. There were positive correlations between dominance status of an individual and several measures of leadership during movements, namely the position of the animal at the front of the herd, more direct and shorter trajectories and higher alignment with nearest neighbours and with the whole herd. These results show that herd movements on pasture behaviour were...
Mapping of distribution of red deer and sika deer hybrids in Czechia using audio recordings - citizen science project
Nečasová, Monika ; Pipek, Pavel (advisor) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
In the Czech Republic, as in other parts of Europe (e.g., British Isles), the native European red deer (Cervus elaphus) has been hybridising with sika deer (C. nippon), which was introduced from East Asia. The hybrids are fertile, and, therefore, can backcross with their parental species and threaten their genetic integrity. Offsprings of such multiple crosses are very difficult to identify according to their morphological traits, while more reliable genetic methods are financially and logistically demanding. This work follows the study of Long et al. from 1998, which showed clear differences in vocalization between red deer, sika deer and the first generation of their hybrids, and thus suggested the third way how to identify hybrids - bioacoustic analysis. We decided to test this method in the Czech Republic in a citizen science project, the aim of which was to map the distribution of parent species and their hybrids using audiorecordings of rut vocalisation. To allow more detailed analysis, we also recorded our own recordings on a professional recording device with a directional microphone. In total, 451 recordings were collected, of which only 263 with a vocalization of 162 individuals were selected for further analysis. Recordings from previous studies from Ireland (Long et al. 1998; Wyman et...
Implication of snow leopard distribution, population dynamics and landscape genetics, and prey preference for its conservation in Nepal
Shrestha, Bikram ; Kindlmann, Pavel (advisor) ; Sedláček, František (referee) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with an endangered large mammal species - snow leopard, its distribution, population dynamics, landscape genetics and connectivity, trophic ecology and human-snow leopard conflicts in the Nepalese Himalaya (Sagarmatha National Park (SNP), Lower Mustang (LM) and Upper Manang (UM) in the Annapurna Conservation Area, during Wet and Dry seasons in 2014-2016. In the case of snow leopard study, we used data obtained from camera traps, scat's genetic analysis and monitoring of fresh pugmarks and scrapes while direct count method was used to study for its main prey, blue sheep and Himalayan tahr. In study 1, we assessed the determinants of habitat suitability of snow leopards using MaxEnt model and mapped the distribution of suitable habitat for snow leopards in Nepal. Altitude and Annual mean temperature are important common factors contributing to snow leopard habitat suitability within the area studied, which is indicated by both the percentage contribution of environmental variables and Jackknife test from MaxEnt model. Some other uncommon factors also seem to play a role, as they were important in at least one of the analyses. These were: distance from road, and precipitation of driest month but their importance has to be considered with caution. In study 2, we present our...

Social behaviour and ecology of bats of the genus Pipisttrellus
Jahelková, Helena ; Horáček, Ivan (advisor) ; Řehák, Zdeněk (referee) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
43 Summary of results of presented research Since discrimination of two cryptic species inside Pipistrellus pipistrellus s.l based on echolocation calls (Jones & van Parijs 1993), social calls (Barlow & Jones 1997), and molecular data (Barratt et al. 1997), the genus Pipistrellus have been studied intensively. The mainstream of my research were reproduction strategies and vocalization behaviour of Nathusius's pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii). It is a small European insectivorous species, which is known for his migratory behaviour. The dominant mating system is resource-defence polygyny. Males vocalize during flight (songflight) and from entrances of their day roosts (sedentary display). Advertising calls occur during whole active season, but they considerable increase during mating season. Males show strong fidelity to their mating roosts whereas females are fixed to maternity colonies (Schmidt 1984, Rachwald 1992, Gerell-Lundberg & Gerell 1994, Furmankiewitz 2003, Petersons 2004). This species exhibits variability in mating behaviour in different countries, probably due to long- distance migrations. In Czech Republic, the species was considered to be rare and only sporadic indications of reproduction were found (Hanák & Gaisler 1976, Šefrová & Buřič 1998). Main research area of my study was in South...
Acoustic communication of selected mammals and birds: identification of vocal categories and individuals
Policht, Richard ; Frynta, Daniel (advisor) ; Špinka, Marek (referee) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
2 Summary Identification of vocal categories (e.g. call types, individuals, species) is a key task when we want to classify animal sounds. Same calls, especially broadband acoustic signals with varying frequency and amplitude modulation present problem for classification, because their energy is spread over a wide range of frequencies. In these sounds is difficult to decide which acoustical parameter to measure. To analyse complex vocalizations I applied a multiparametric method with using both temporal and spectral parameters. The most useful variables were variables describing distribution of the spectral energy. Frequency parameters were also useful in the case of tonal calls. I described vocal repertoire of Northern white rhinoceros and Bactrian camel. Both animals have low-frequency calls in their repertoire close to infrasound range, but it is evident that these signals are not used for long-distance communication. It seems that low-frequency components of their sounds are by product of their large body size. Growling sounds of camels are also interesting by their cohesive function, in contrast to growling sounds of rhinos and other mammals where such as calls are produced during aggressive interactions. I examined whether individual identity might be also encoded in very simple song types in...
