Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky. Katedra mediálních studií. Vedoucí diplomové práce doc. PhDr. Pavla Vošahlíková, DrSc. Abstract This master's thesis maps the development of advertising in the Czech press during the First Republic, specifically between 1927 and 1937, on the example of two illustrated weeklies - Pestrý týden and Prague Illustrated Newsletter. It looks at the period under review in the context of the country's economic situation, social settings and lifestyle, where the middle classes have formed the country's economic and social balance, helping to bring new products to mass consumption. Women's emancipation, the technological development of the media as well as the development of advertising as an industry and the increasing level of ad targeting for their audience were also important. The thesis examines how advertisements in two magazines approach their readers and try to get their attention, what are their specifics, and especially what development occurred in the period of 10 years during the First Republic, when the Czech advertising industry was evolving, looking up to the American pattern. The research was carried...

Michaela Blažková Vedoucí dizertační práce: Doc. PhDr. Michal Pullmann, Ph.D. Praha 2018 Summary Against the backdrop of political, economic and cultural changes, changes have been taking place in the United States of America in the 1950s, even at the level of whole society. One of the crucial changes was the entrance of television broadcasting into the environment of social relations and relationships. Television, as a new form of media that aims to entertain, inform and educate, had very quickly found its way to the most of households where it has settled adamantly. Initially, however, a programmed composition was not firmly established, which sought its stable image at this time in the form of trial and error. In the Czechoslovakia, and later also in the Czech Republic, TV has also won many supporters. The technical form of the broadcasting scheme was formed on the basis of the actual technical possibilities and the range of the transmitting time. In addition to political influence on broadcasting until 1989,...

Soukalová, Kateřina ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
Main topic of the diploma thesis is advertising related to health in press of the First Republic in former Czechoslovakia, especially in tabloid newspapers from the press group called Tempo of Jiří Stříbrný. It deals with advertisements related to medical devices, aids or medicinal and dietetic products, as well as health care. It shows that there has been no consistent or consistently observed legislation with regard to such advertising. There were many complaints by doctors or pharmacists about dry-selling advertising in newspapers, about quack advertising and offering charlatan's products. The thesis brings insights into individual thematic types of health-related advertising, describes those that were most often imprinted, which products and services were the most targeted. All this in connection with current medical, pharmacy, or legal discourse about quack advertisements in daily papers or charlatanism as such.
Prague advertisment in the interwar period
Štěpánek, Ondřej ; Jakubec, Ivan (advisor) ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (referee)
In this diploma thesis Prague Advertisement in the Interwar Period its author Ondřej Štěpánek deals with a so far almost neglected topic - advertisement in Prague in years 1918 -1939. After outlining the development of advertisement in these two decades in the whole newly constituted state, the author focuses on regional specifics in the capital city that were set by local regulations. He mainly addressed the legality of individual advertising means, especially those in public spaces, and he also described producers of advertisement in Prague. The author concludes that advertisement made a large progress in the respective period, particularly during the late 1920s and the first half of the 1930s. Advertising companies had to deal with many restrictions and prohibitions brought by the new legislation. This diploma thesis provides new insight in the research of the advertisement history, especially in the area of the development of advertising agencies.

Alcohol Advertising
Trkovská, Jana ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (advisor) ; Zezulková, Markéta (referee)
The thesis concerns itself with alcohol advertising. Alcohol is the most widespread habit-forming substance, yet its consumption is permitted in most countries all around the world, possibly restricted by the age of consumers only. Drinking alcohol cannot be either regulated or prohibited today. It has become commonplace for the majority of our lives. Being aware of its apparent risks, however, there is an effort to regulate at least alcohol advertising. The main objective of this work was to provide a comprehensive picture of alcohol advertising, with the focus on its regulation, concerning the legal regulation as well as the self-regulation. First, the thesis deals with advertising as such, its regulation in the course of time and how it has been regulated recently. The thesis further describes the adjustment of alcohol advertising, the legal amendment and its development, as well as the regulation through The Czech Advertising Standards Council and the development of this self- regulation. The next chapter focuses on the examination of alcohol advertising over the age. Based on the analysis of the advertising involvement of Pilsner Urquell, as the selected alcohol industry representative, it was found that advertising during the 20th century did not consider its legal, since it was very limited...
Image of health in advertising. Content analysis of advertisement of medicinal products in selected womenˇs magazines
Pavlačková, Anna ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (advisor) ; Zábrodská, Kristina (referee)
The master thesis deals with the development and display of advertisement for medicine and health- related products and services in Czech women's magazines. We compare here two periods - The First Czechoslovak Republic and present. It focuses primarily on these following questions: Does the display of health-related products have changed? Do we still advertise products of the similar character? Has the ideal of heath changed and things which were believed healthy in the past, are not considered healthy anymore? Is the difference related to historical events or rather related to the current state of society and its preferences? The main titles for analysis were Eva: A journal of modern women from the 1930s, which was published by Melantrich and current lifestyle magazine Elle, which is published by Hubert Burda Media. The theoretical part summarizes current basic knowledge about press, advertising, healthcare. In the practical part are more closely introduced the research methods - content and image analysis and also the process of analysis and the comparison by itself. An integral part of the thesis is the attached advertisements, on which the analysis was based, and which serve for better illustration of the above-mentioned phenomena. Life style in Czechoslovakia (1918 - 1938) described in gastronomy sections in newspapers and journals of that time
Zábrodská, Kristina ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (referee)
The popularity of the First Czechoslovak Republic in today's press is evident. The rebirth of Czech cuisine is apparent in an inland gastronomy in the last five or seven years. Both chefs and food writers refer to the First Czechoslovak Republic gastronomy more and more frequently and speak highly of its quality and taste. There is no omnibus covering alimentation in Czechoslovakia during the years 1918 - 1938. Pieces of information can be found in memoires, in books dealing with the history of everyday life, in folklore studies and last, but not least, in historical press. An outline of the inland gastronomy in 1918 - 1938 was made in my diploma thesis Gastronomy in the First Czechoslovak Republic press (2012). Using a content analysis method the four biggest newspapers and eight women's journals published between 1918 - 1938 on Czechoslovak territory were examined. Articles were selected on the basis of important religious holidays and traditions (Christmas, harvest etc.) in the years outstanding for the First Republic development (1918, 1919, 1921, 1924, 1929, 1933, 1935 a 1938). For further findings of additional and linking facts, the historical analysis method is used as well. My PhD thesis is based on my previous diploma thesis, but it is more concise, the structure of chapters is changed,...
