Abstrakt: The reform of regional government in the Czech Republic was part of the stream of institutional changes that took place after the demise of the Communist regime. It has been implemented in two stages. The first stage took place in the early 1990s when the constitutional foundations of the sysrtem of subnational government were laid down and the municipal tier was put inti place. The second stage occurred in the second half of the 1990s and in the early 2000s when the reform embraced the intermediate tier of government. It is the reform of the regional (intermediate) government which is the main focus of the paper.
