Seizing the past in the Novels of Julian Barnes with Regard to the Author's Narrative Techniques
ČEŠKOVÁ, Karolína
The thesis examines the concept of the past in selected works by Julian Barnes, regarding the narrative techniques chosen by the author. It focuses on central thematic strands: fictionalizing of history and the bidirectional nature of past and present. The outlined thematic strands represent the author's approach to treating the theme of the past in his novels. Besides the common theme of the search for historical truth that Barnes' works share, the aim of this thesis is to examine the depiction of the past in relation to the themes of memory, truth, and how these factors shape the formation of individual and collective identities. The thesis considers not only narrative but also thematic inspiration provided to Barnes' contemporary writing by postmodern tendencies, particularly the scepticism towards historical truth and the subjectivism with which he views history.

The Art Scene in Ostrava in an Extended Context of the1980's and 1990's
Král, Jakub ; Pech, Milan (referee)
As a result of the postmodern decentralization of thinking, the monolithic historical development is undermined and together with it the peripheral streams of artistic development are accepted. In the mid-eighties in the Czech republic two parallel regional art scenes were emerged in Ostrava and Usti nad Labem, which are characterized by a different approach to traditional artistic strategies. It seems that traditional disciplines in these regions are failing, and the artists due to the impossibility of continuous connection with previous historical development and the lack of institutional support opts for the intesified position towards the bases of the art itself and its affirmation. Artists in the 1980s and 1990s in Ostrava turned against the classic institutional activity in the form of orientation on the public space and criticism of the bases of modern autonomous artwork. Ideology of Liberalism, or Ideology after its own End
Korda, Tomáš ; Suša, Oleg (advisor) ; Hauser, Michael (referee)
The essay begins with Benjamin`s comprehension of truth and his method of constellation which aims to the truth. I connect the method to the act of naming, which I derive from comprehension of subject in German idealism. Method is necessary condition for very constellation of liberal ideology. Contemporary liberalism thus does not only symbolize time after "the end ideology", but even space of time, when the ideology acquire its own most effective form. "The truth became most effective form of lie." In this sense I continue in critique of postmodernism as the ideology of late capitalism. In fine I outline the way to postmodernism by force of "risk thinking" which remains faithful to dialectic. Solely immanent critique which is far from normative critique of postmodernism sets in motion rigid conditions caused by omnipresent ideology.
The analysis of movie characters of cyborg-woman from the perspective of the postmodern and post-theoretical approaches to the body and the identity constitution.
Bubeníčková, Kateřina ; Fišerová, Michaela (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
The thesis focuses on the analysis of the basic types of the film characters portraying artificial women: creatures who combine "femininity" (humanity) and technology, and who show female sexual characteristics or features that are stereotypically perceived as female-like (e.g. female cyborgs, female androids, female robots). The characters are analyzed and approached from the perspective of postmodern philosophy and post-theory studies; the forming of their body and identity is analyzed on the account of the narrative. The aim of the thesis is to explore whether the film representations of female cyborgs are similar to real cyborgs in the sense that they bring liberalization from the point if view of posthumanism and cyberfeminism, or whether they can only be perceived as the prime form of the Foucaltian body-as-machine, i.e. perfectly controllable precise technicist bodies which are created by the current power dispositions. The characters are divided into four categories, based on their predominant physical and "social" functions: a sexbot, a domesticated artificial woman, a destructive artificial woman and an emotional/intelligent artificial woman. The following identification and interpretation of the body, identity, relationships and the narrative structures are based on the theoretical...
