The Linguistic Analysis of Selected Podcasts
Vykoukalová, Denisa ; Nedvědová, Blanka (advisor) ; Vlčková, Jana (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with a relatively new phenomenon of the journalistic genre - the podcast. The aim of the work is to determine its language specifics. In the theoretical part, the podcast, as a new genre, is introduced and specified. Related terms are defined in this part too. Furthermore, selected podcasts are introduced in this section. The practical part is central to the thesis. It is based on linguistic analysis of specific speeches. The analysis focuses mainly on linguistic variations, peculiarities and shortcomings. For the best possible clarity, it is divided into subchapters according to linguistic levels. After the pilot survey podcasts that can be classified as educational were selected for the bachelor's thesis. Despite their similarity, they are diverse. In addition to the analysis itself, the result of the thesis is an evaluation of typical features, placing in a theoretical framework and drawing a conclusion in which the results of the research are confronted with hypotheses. Grammaticalization potentiel of the anaphoric ten in spoken narative discourse
Zíková, Magdalena ; Friedová, Mirjam (advisor) ; Nedolužko, Anna (referee) ; Berger, Tilman (referee)
In my Ph.D. thesis, I examine the use of referential devices in spoken narrative discourse with predominant anaphoric reference. Special attention is paid to the relationship between two competing forms: lexical phrases containing the lexeme ten (ten-MARKED NPs) and lexical phrases not containing it (UNMARKED NPs) in repeated mentions. A primary aim of the work is (i) to identify factors favouring the use of ten-marked NPs at the expense of unmarked NPs and (ii) to explore the possibility of the lexeme ten grammaticalizing from its anaphoric use. Theoretically and methodologically I benefit mostly from the conception of discourse anaphora and the theory of grammaticalization. The referential devices are systematically explored in terms of their distribution into different classes according to a set of parameters and their values. These parameters reflect the conceptual (animacy), grammatical (syntactic function, type of clause etc.) as well as discourse characteristics of the forms and their referents (informational status of the NP in the clause, activation and persistence of the referent, etc.). The data consist of 45 short narratives produced by 15 speakers. The speakers' task was to retell three short silent-movie sketches which they had seen immediately before the recording. The design of the...

Lenka Mundevová Translation of Colloquial Language Devices in Fiction: A Century of Maupassant's Ivrogne in Czech Translation Abstract The dissertation compares the stylization of the dialogues in the French original of Maupassant's short story Ivrogne (The Drunkard), written in 1884, with five Czech translations published between 1902 and 1997. The comparative analysis is focused on the devices of colloquial language, including dialect, which appear frequently in the dialogues of the story and prove to be extraordinarily useful when interpreting Maupassant's text. The analysis of the excerpted material is preceded by the description of the basic characteristics of colloquial French and Czech, followed by the description of their stratifications. The mutual relation of the colloquial language varieties is an important prerequisite for the evaluation of the translations of colloquial language devices and their appropriateness in the individual Czech versions of Ivrogne. The paper also deals with the development of Czech aesthetic translation standards and their relation to the standard of local fiction, outlining the important tendencies of Czech fiction translation applied when colloquial devices were conveyed from French to Czech during the specified timeframe. The individual language devices used in the...
The Communication of Teachers in the Secondary Schools for Hearing impaired in Czech Republic
Pánek, Petr ; Hudáková, Andrea (advisor) ; Zbořilová, Radka (referee)
This diploma thesis deals, in a broader sense, with classroom interaction betwen students and history teachers at secondary schools for hearing impaired in the Czech Republic. In a narrower sense, it examines a pattern of teacher's language behaviour and his/her motivation when choosing relevant language means during his/her history classes. The work consists of two parts - theoretical specialized background, and practical research. The theoretical part gives an overview of the relevant specialized terminology used in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as a short insight into the development of classroom interaction between a student and a teacher at special schools and pays attention to the developmental linguo-didactic aspects in the Czech schools for hearing impaired. The practical part uses qualitative research as a means of a research method. I have observed and filmed history classes at three secondary schools for hearing impaired. As my research interests laid within the above mentioned research technique, I did not assess teaching methodology of the teachers. I focused mainly on the form of teacher's communication. Apart from class observation and filming, I also carried out an after-class interview with each teacher about his/her motivation for the choice of language behaviour. Special...

Particles in the spoken Czech (on the material from the Prague spoken corpus)
Yamamoto, Emi ; Adamovičová, Ana (advisor) ; Hudousková, Andrea (referee)
Particles in the Spoken Czech have been underestimated as a subject of research which have not been studied enough, even though the figures of the Prague Spoken Corpus (PSC) show that every 8 word in Spoken Czech is particle on average. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze particles compiled by PSC; the research of particles has been done both statistically and with respect to another characteristics of classification by sociolinguistic parameter, character, valency and function.
