Migration and Development: Impact of Remittances from Europe and Russia on Armenia

- English Migration, transnationalism and remittances are phenomena that receive a lot of attention in social sciences. As part of remittances, this attention is amplified by their economical impact on the economies of entire countries. My thesis is devoted to the social influences and impacts of financial remittances on families and entire communities. The work deals with how individuals, families or entire communities are influenced by financial aid sent by one or possibly more family members from abroad. Using semi-structured in-depth interviews, the work examines the effects of remittances and the "dependency syndrome" on them. In its first, theoretical part, the thesis explains the key concepts with which it will deal - migration, transnationalism, diaspora remittances - and whose effects it will subsequently examine in the analytical part based on semi-structured interviews. The data is processed on the basis of qualitative approach, which allows sufficient analysis and insight into the issue. The conclusion of the work reflects the knowledge obtained from the interviews and the perception of migrants and their family members about the effects of remittances and, consequently, the remittances' "dependence syndrome".

Russian Hegemony in the post-Soviet Region: The Case of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War

The Master's thesis examines Russia's hegemonic efforts to strengthen its influence in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and, therefore, in its so-called near abroad. The work is conducted as a case study of the 2020 Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and the subsequent deployment of the Russian uni-national peacekeeping mission in the region. The thesis aims to discover whether the physical presence of the Russian peacekeepers in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the new realities after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War increased the influence of Russia and thus strengthened its hegemonic position in the South Caucasus region or not. The thesis is framed by hegemonic stability theories and regional security complex and supplemented by empirical data.

Armenia's accession to the Customs Union : gains of losses?

Armenia is going to join the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia (the Eurasian Customs Union) in the coming months. The author uses partial-equilibrium model to investigate and calculate trade diversion, trade creation and net welfare effects of accession on the Armenian economy. The thesis concludes that the membership in the customs union would lead to welfare losses and negative static effects. The main reason is the pure trade diversion effect on Armenia resulting from the increased external tariff rate. Adopting the common external tariff of the Eurasian Customs Union would raise the prices of those imported goods which flow from outside the customs union. As the majority of Armenian imports come from outside the Eurasian Customs Union, the increase in import prices would carry high social costs for the Armenian consumers. In addition, the absence of shared border with the customs union member-states substantially diminishes the potential benefits from possible non-tariff barrier facilitation. Therefore, the thesis strongly recommends against the accession.

Analysis of relations of the South Caucasus countries

Pavel Makovský: Analýza vztahů jihokavkazských států Abstrakt The South Caucasus is very heterogeneous and dynamic region. In the area are conflicts not only between Christianity and Islam, but also major geopolitical actors. The world power is interested in this area thanks to exploitation of oil, natural gas and pipeline from Azerbaijan. The main aim of the bachelor thesis is to analyze the interrelationships of all three states, which is based on principles of liberal-idealist tradition. This thesis is focused on the economic power and interdependence of foreign trade, the intensity and the results of international meetings of politicians or the involvement of transnational institutions and their benefits. Each state takes to its neighbors totally different attitude and because of it are the resulting relationships quite different. Diversity of these states encourages orientation on the superpowers and institutions. These interests puts their potential partners against each other. Instability of the region confirms the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is still actual, because there were mutual armed clashes even in April 2016. Socialization of Second Generation Armenian Immigrants

A qualitative research focuses on the effects of socialization in Czech cultural environment on the ethnic identity of the second generation Armenian immigrants. The research was conducted with six participants. Their age ranged between 17-28. Two of the participants were male. Author used the method of semi-structured interviews, to find out how the different socialization factors interract with a person's identity. In order to preserve the original ethnic identity, several factors must meet. The first contact of family with the destination country has a significant impact on a child's development of ethnicity. Perception of Armenian Question for Czech Readership (1878 - 1925)

This bachelor thesis is devoted to the analysis of reflection of the Armenian Question in crucial years 1878 - 1925. The main aim is to examine one historical issue on different levels with use of two case studies demanding different methodological approach. The opening chapter is focusing on the image of Armenians and Turks in Czech public sphere. The second part of my thesis is dealing with changing image of violence committed on Armenian population in the late Ottoman Empire in the Czech language daily Národní politika. In the third chapter I am paying attention to the writings of Czech traveler and humanist Karel Hansa. My study of the journal Národní listy is focusing on approach of the newspaper to mass violence and humanitarian problems and it takes a form of textual, quantitative and contents analysis. The chapter 4 about Karel Hansa is worked out in a narrative style with use of anthropological approach. My attention in both cases is focusing on phenomena of indifference or active help in the time of genocide and humanitarian crises through a prism of study with subtitle Psychic numbing and genocide by American psychologist Paul Slovic. Constructing Nagorno-Karabakh: a diachronic discourse analysis

In over 20 years of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, there has been no significant progress towards a peaceful agreement. It has been argued that there is not enough incentive for leaders to agree to a compromise and that the citizens are not ready to accept one. In this context, the way the conflict and the enemy are described in public discourse is important not only because it represents the viewpoints of those producing the discourse but because it can have a real effect on public opinion. This paper examines discourse on Azerbaijan and the future of Nagorno-Karabakh in an official newspaper, showing that distrust of Azerbaijan and rigid expectations about the future of Nagorno-Karabakh are dominant.
