The Stereotype of a Deaf Person in Czech Society
Mankovecká, Alžběta Anna ; Vaňková, Irena (advisor) ; Vinš, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis focuses on the reconstruction of the stereotype of a deaf person (hluchý/neslyšící) in the Czech society, based on a questionnaire survey. First, the research context is presented - with an emphasis on concepts such as the linguistic picture of the world, the opposition own - foreign (us - them), and especially the stereotype, also in a brief comparison with other concepts of social stereotype, with Allport's concept of stereotype and prejudice etc. Subsequently, the attention is devoted to connotations, cognitive definition and linguistic methods of ascertaining connotations as the basis of the stereotype structure (linguistic, textual, empirical data). With the help of Czech dictionaries and previous works, the central position of the Czech stereotype of a deaf person is briefly described based on systemic, or folklore data. The core of this thesis is qualitative empirical research inspired by J. Bartmińský's methodology (100 respondents in two age and social groups, open-ended questions directed at the basic positions of the stereotype: appearance, characteristics, behavior, etc.). At the end of the thesis, a structured cognitive definition is presented connected with the social stereotype of a deaf person in today's Czech society. The Discussion chapter follows, where, in addition to...
Expressing Gender and Sexual Orientation in Czech Sign Language
Haľama, Hana ; Vinš, Ondřej (advisor) ; Holubová, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the ways of expressing signs in the field of gender, identity and sexual orientation. The thesis aims at mapping how native speakers of Czech sign language naturally express selected terms related to gender and sexual orientation and what strategies they choose when a given term is on the periphery of their sign vocabulary, when it has no established sign or when it has more of them. The material for the research part is a series of lectures on the lives of queer people with disabilities that took place in November 2022 at the Prague Pride Community Centre, two of which were dedicated to the Deaf community. Additional research material includes semi- structured interviews with members of the LGBTQIA+ community who are also native speakers of Czech sign language. The advantage of the second part of the research is the specificity of the terms for which the thesis investigates how they are expressed in Czech Sign Language. Keywords: sign language, identity, sexual orientation, LGBTQIA+, gender
Particularities of the Facebook Communication of the Deaf
Jechová, Lenka ; Vinš, Ondřej (advisor) ; Sedláčková Půlpánová, Lucie (referee)
We study the particularities of communication of the deaf on Facebook. We summarize the specifics of social networks and the specifics of communication there through the psycho-social and linguistic lens. The research itself was conducted in the Facebook group "Koronavirus pro neslyšící v ČR" (Coronavirus for the deaf in Czech Republic). We limited ourselves to the time period starting in September 2020 until February 2021. The research consisted of an overal qualitative investigation of the particularities of communication of the deaf in posts and comments, and of testing of four hypotheses. These concerned the topics of posts and their form, the ratio of presence of visual elements in comments, and the prevalence of humorous posts. We confirmed that the most frequent form of post was a video in Czech sign language, and that of the 11 recognized topics, posts most frequently adressed pandemic ordinances and regulations. Conversely, regarding the presence of visual elements, we found that the textual form of comments predominated over the visual form. Among the posts, we identified 6 humorous ones, which we analyzed in more detail. Finally, we analyzed the deviations of the texts from codified Czech and compared them with the work of Šebková, who investigated the same topic in 2008.
On Speech in the Poetry of Karel Šiktanc
Vinš, Ondřej ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Hrdlička, Josef (referee)
On Speech in the Poetry of Karel Šiktanc The diploma thesis focuses on the poetry of Karel Šiktanc from the 1970 s to the present. It aims to identify and describe those invariables that could characterize his poetic work. In order to accomplish that, two main theoretical sources are used. First, Martin Heidegger's essay Básnicky bydlí člověk, and second, a cognitive ethnolinguistics approach. The overall goal of the thesis is to demonstrate how language (or, more precisely speech) might be conceptualized (cf. the metaphor of speech as space) and what function does speech have in the magical thinking. Using Eugène Minkowski's term zvučení, a noticeable contrast between the sound of speech and silence in Šiktanc's imagery is commented on. Due to the vastness of data, the analysis concentrates on selected poems that are somehow emblematic of each collection.
Appeal and Absurdity in Václav Havel's Work
Vinš, Ondřej ; Vaňková, Irena (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis analyses the concepts of APPEAL and ABSURDITY within the work of Václav Havel, using the tools of cognitive linguistics, particularly the theory of key words and its modification by David Danaher. It focuses mainly on Havel's essays, speeches and letters. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how Václav Havel constructed these concepts in his non-artistic texts, which conceptual metaphors and narratives he used and how these concepts are interconnected with the entirety of his work.
