Rhyme and Stanza in Czech Verse, especially in the Poetry of Jan Neruda
Říha, Jakub ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
The present study focuses on the two broad areas of theory and history of Czech verse, rhyme and stanza. The first part of the study is dedicated to the rhyme. It contains a historical and terminological introduction and a comprehensive description and interpretation of principles of rhyme in Czech accentual-syllabic verse (19th century). The characterization of the principles of rhyme in other versification systems (syllabic verse, quantitative verse) and in free verse is allocated in the separate sections. Methodologically, the first part is based on the tradition of Czech structuralism. The second part, dedicated to the stanza, brings a similarly conceived interpretation of stanzaic forms in the Czech syllabic and accentual-syllabic verse. Given the absence of Czech tradition, the second part is methodologically inspired by French metrics. In addition to terminological and methodological apparatus the second part includes an inventory of basic stanzaic forms in the Czech verse and its analysis. A separate section within the second part is devoted to the small group of quantitative stanzas employed in Czech verse. The third part contains three case studies on rhyme and stanzaic forms in the Czech poetry of the second half of the 19th century, with special attention to the poetic work of Jan...
František Gellner. Text - Image - Context
Kořínková, Lucie ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee)
The Ph.D. thesis deals with the Czech author František Gellner. It deliberately endeavours not to exclude any of the segments of his both literary and visual work out of consideration, but to present them all in their heterogeneity, yet in mutual connections. Works of Gellner's art are therefore interpreted in novel ways, especially in consideration of the contexts of the period from which they origin (and above others those contexts that have become obscure and forgotten in the nearly hundred years since the original publication of Gellner's work). The first chapter summarizes the previous critical reception of Gellner's work and at the same time deals with this author's image in the Czech cultural milieu. Analysing some of Gellner's manuscripts, the second chapter aims to describe the specific type of the author's creativity. The third chapter is devoted to the problem of ambiguously constructed national identity of František Gellner and to the impact it had on the ways he dealt with the themes of Jewishness and anti-Semitism. The fourth chapter describes the various relations between Gellner's works and the periodicals these were prepared for. The next chapter is dedicated solely to Lidové noviny, as this was the newspaper periodical with which Gellner co-operated most intensely; the detailed...
Poetry of the first three decades of the 19th century. Starting points and conditions of creation and its genre composition in the work of the enlightenment poetic generation
Vítová, Andrea ; Sgallová, Květa (advisor) ; Bekešová, Martina (referee) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee)
The PhD thesis Poetry of the First Three Decades of the 19th Century. Starting Points and Conditions of Creation and Its Genre Composition in the Work of the Enlightenment Poetic Generation deals with poetry of the Czech national revival starting from appearance of Puchmajer's poetic school stemming from Enlightenment classicism to pieces of work created under the growing influence of romanticism in the 30ies of the 19th century. The goal of this thesis is to follow the development, transformations and mutual action of the most important lyrical and epic genres of revival poetry, in view of the contemporary role of writing in verse and of the specific conditions of creation as well as reception of poetic work in the Czech language. It assumes and verifies on specific texts that for revival authors, writing of Czech poems is especially an expression of patriotic efforts; talent and literary erudition are not a necessary predisposition of creation. The thesis analyses poetic texts and generalises the results in the form of basic features of revival poetry. Based on transformations of individual genres, the conclusions of this thesis emphasize the principal advancement which occurred in poetic creation of the national revival in the 20ies of the 19th century. Aspiring of the poems to high, more demanding...
Josef Karásek (1868-1916) in the context of Czech Slavic Studies and the Czech literary scene in Vienna (On the participation of Vienna in inter-Slavic cultural relations from the founding of the Jagić Seminary to the birth of Czechoslovakia)
Černý, Marcel ; Hauptová, Zoe (advisor) ; Petrbok, Václav (referee) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee)
This dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part (2. VIENNA AND CZECH LITERATURE) is devoted to the interaction between the city of Vienna and modern Czech culture, primarily literature. The second part (3. VIENNA AND CZECH SLAVIC STUDIES) is oriented toward the problematic of the history of Slavic Studies, the area of Slavic philology which, as a meta-discipline, deals with the self-reflection of its own subject. Specifically, both the initiative of the "Jagić concept" of Slavic philology for Czech Slavic Studies as it was eventually reflected in Karásek's specialized activities and the panoramic outline of the way in which Jagić's work was perceived and absorbed in the Czech surroundings are the subject of consideration. However, this study is not a "classic" monograph in the narrow sense of the word. Josef Karásek, who was a literary historian, editor, translator, and promoter of Slavic literatures in the German-speaking world, was not a central personality in the history of Czech Slavic Studies. Yet on the other hand, considering the rather strong echo of his work in Czech, Viennese and other Slavic research communities, and in spite of the partial research eclecticism of his work, it cannot be said that Karásek was a mere journalist and author of compilations. His extensive estate, which was...
