Pictograms of plants as support for a visual learning style in teaching botany
Drozdová, Anna ; Slovák, Marek (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with pictograms of plants as a possible support for the visual learning style in the teaching of botany. It contains a cross-section of learning style topics and a cross-section of biology teaching topics. In the chapter on learning styles, it focuses on methods of research of visual learning and on pictures and pictograms used for learning. The work assumes that the visual style of learning is the most effective for learning, and that its better integration into biology lessons can raise interest even in less popular thematic units belonging to this subject. In the chapter focused on the teaching of biology, the thesis then focuses on popular and unpopular topics in biology classes, with a special focus on botany and the problems associated with its teaching. The thesis offers a solution to this situation by using plant pictograms in order to increase the popularity of botany, which could be through the application of plant pictograms in the teaching of botany in primary and secondary schools. The final section summarizes and discusses knowledge about the visual style of teaching, the use of pictorial materials, and most importantly, pictograms in streamlining the teaching of botany, supported by arguments from an array of scientific sources proving the usefulness of...
Teacher's opinions on the opportunities for increasing the attractiveness of the subjects Introduction to Science, Natural Science, Natural History and Biology at primary and secondary schools
Semecký, Martin ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
A number of studies show that the interest of pupils in primary and secondary schools in science subjects is declining. Most Czech authors study this issue from the perspective of pupils. The aim of our research was therefore to learn the opinions of, and hear suggestions from, teachers on the opportunities for making education more attractive and increasing the popularity of the subjects Introduction to Science, Natural Science, Natural History, and Biology in primary and secondary schools and to compare these school levels with one another. The research was carried out by qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with twelve active teachers from the Liberec region who teach the above-mentioned subjects at the first stage of basic school (=ISCED⁏ 4 teachers), the second stage of basic school (=ISCED⁏ 4 teachers), and at the higher and lower level of grammar school (=ISCED 2+3; 4 teachers). The respondents mentioned that everything depends on the teacher, the age, the social composition of the pupils, and also on the topic taught. Among the topics that are attractive to students, teachers named, for example, human biology and zoology, especially mammals. On the contrary, the students considered the themes focused on minerals and rocks and botany to be unattractive. Most teachers mentioned...
Factors influencing the approach and motivation of primary and secondary school pupils to learn first aid
Havlíková, Barbara ; Kuba, Radim (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
The first aid education is an effective way how to emphasize the importance of the first aid among wide society. School children are enthusiastic to gain new knowledge, have good learning dispositions and high rate of retention of gained knowledge. This makes them the best target group how to nurture population which will be educated and trained in the first aid. In those countries, where the first aid education is a mandatory part of school curricula, survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest increase significantly. The scope of this bachelor thesis is to gather information from expert studies and to create a literature review of the factors influencing the approach and motivation of primary and secondary school pupils to learn first aid. The thesis focus particularly on factors influencing approach of school children to the first aid education and which expert learning methods could be the most appropriate if we consider age specifics of children. An important part of this thesis is a summary of gathered knowledge about how to improve effectiveness of the first aid education at elementary and secondary schools (ie. whether lessons led by teachers or experts are more effective way).
Analysis of Misconceptions with Regard of First Aid Topic among Teachers and General Population of Czech Republic
Křečková, Adéla ; Kuba, Radim (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
First aid is defined as a set of simple procedures that effectively reduce the extants or consequences of the threats to health or life. The first aid procedures are defined in the so- called Guidelines published by the European Resuscition Council (ERC) every five years. Even so, wrong procedures and myths are still present in the population. These could endanger peoples' health or cause death. In this diploma thesis, these incorrect procedures are called misconceptions. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the present misconceptions among general population and teachers in the Czech Republic, their dispersion and sources. The outcomes of this study are compared with results of the Czech Elementary school and Grammar school teachers determined by Zvěřinová (2018). Secondary aim is to analyze dissemination of misconceptions among the respondents from general public that had some first aid training in their life and to find out, if the extant of the training is relevant. Also, the level of first aid training at all levels of education is assessed. The research was realized by an online questionnaire. The main part of the questionnaire contains 10 case studies and the respondents decide on accuracy of the given solutions. The research sample consists of 1 046 respondents from three categories...
The Evaluation of the Geological Educational Program and its Comparison with the Teaching in the Classroom
Pelechová, Kateřina ; Dvořáková, Radka (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
The thesis is concerned with appraising the educational program of the Geology Teaching Center Říčany, in particular its influence on the pupils' attitudes towards geology. The benefits of field trips and outdoor education have been observed many times; however, mostly pupils' knowledge or skills were taken into consideration while their attitudes have been investigated fairly recently. Moreover, geology is regarded by pupils as 'the more boring part of nature' and hence I was interested in whether (and how) the non-standard form of education can change the pupils' attitudes towards geology. The objectives of the thesis were 1) to investigate what the pupils' attitudes towards geology are, and 2) to decide whether (and how) the specific geology field trip affects these attitudes and to compare this influence with the one of standard class education. The third, last objective consisted in stating whether the field trip in question will help pupils to understand how sundry topographic features were created. The main research question was stated as follows: How will the field trip affect the pupils' attitudes towards geology in comparison with standard class education covering the same topics? According to results of my investigation, pupils regard geology as the most useless and unpopular branch of...
Birds in Textbooks for Elementary Schools and Lower Grammar Schools (Analysis of the Graphic Design of the Chapter Birds with Focused on Model Species)
Vávrová, Anna ; Dvořáková, Radka (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the graphic processing of the chapter Birds (Aves) in natural science textbooks for teaching at elementary school or lower grammar school with a focus on the model species (hereinafter referred to as MS) used for the chapter. The focus on MS stems from the fact that the authors choose different taxa representatives from the taxon, they are not uniformly displayed or described. The theoretical part of the DT deals with the definition of a textbook and the possibilities of its analysis. In particular, research is described here, which focuses on the importance of graphic information in textbooks and misconceptions in pupils for the taxon birds. In the second part of the chapter I deal with the characteristics of the bird taxon. In the practical part of DT, my first goal is to map and analyze graphic information and its processing for the taxon birds (Aves) in natural science textbooks for primary and lower grammar school. The analysis involves the comparison of specific textbooks, the ways in which they are displayed, the ways of describing them in the text and other characteristics that relate to all general pictures that show important features of the group. Another aim of this part of DT is to describe and evaluate the MS for the bird tax (Aves), which would be...

Microscopic Practice for Elementary School
Švajcrová, Lenka ; Dvořáková, Radka (advisor) ; Poupová, Jana (referee)
The main aim of my thesis was to come up with a manual for microscopic practices for elementary school's biology classes that are useful and easy to understand. The practices were drawn from ordinary textbooks (such as Fortuna, Fraus, Jinan, Natura, Nová Škola, Prodos, Scientia, SPN) that are often used for teaching pupils from 6th to 9th grade of elementary school. I also added interesting facts and practices which were drawn from the internet. I also focused on the pupil's attitude to microscoping using special questionnaires. Pupils wrote that their relationship with microscoping is positive and it helps them to understand the biology curriculum more. Furthermore, I gained information about the frequency that they practice microscoping at school. Although there are not enough biology lessons overall, I find out that most teachers usually manage to practice microscoping in class once every two weeks. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I focused on the structure of the optical microscope, which is used in classes and on the making of a temporary and permanent preparation. I also clarified the importance of microscoping practices and the pupil's opinions about it. Lastly, I added an overview of biology textbooks used in primary schools and grammar schools. Keywords: microscope, laboratory...
