Participation dimension of the EU communication activities in the Czech Republic
Kroupa, Jan ; Martinková, Viera (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to explain which bariers exist from the point of view of citizens of the Czech Republic in relation to their (non)participation within the European Public Sphere. The goal of this thesis is to define these obstacles, and describe which type of barriers have the most significant impact. The thesis examines the influence of socio-demographic factors, but also respondents' attitudes towards the idea of European integration, as well as barriers in the form of lack of resources (such as finance or information) or lack of opportunities for participation. The theoretical part of the thesis analyzes the ideas of the European public sphere and democratic participation. This section is followed by an analysis of potential channels of European participation and their specifics in the Czech context. This is expanded upon by the analytical part of the thesis, which uses a questionnaire survey to analyze the attitudes of respondents to selected political topics and to predefined forms of participation. Furthermore, the effects of barriers on non-participation are examined. The research managed to provide a total of 514 answers in multiple-choice or battery-type questions. The questionnaire is complemented by an open-ended question focused on respondents' suggestions for making...
Do existing theories explain the crises of European integration? Case study: Brexit
Havlín, Kryštof ; Martinková, Viera (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the phenomenon of the crisis of European integration and disintegration, a topic that has re-emerged in the academic arena, especially due to the British referendum on remaining in the European Union. This text focuses on the concept of disintegration and disintegration theories that attempt to explain and predict integration crises such as this one. Specifically, the thesis focuses on the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, which occurred on 31 January 2020, thus Brexit plays the role of a case that is analysed in detail. The thesis is framed as a case study that aims to see whether any existing integration or disintegration theoretical approach can, on the basis of its given theses and definitions, explain the crises of European integration and identify their causes. The most relevant theories to test, which currently have something to say about disintegration, were chosen - postfunctionalism, social constructivism and the intergovernmental liberal approach. Each of these theories contains a completely different view and perspective on the development of European integration and potential crises. The main objective of the thesis is achieved through the method of congruence, where the three selected theories are successively tested and applied to the case of Brexit. The...
Models of data flow governance and their followers: Why do countries adopt one framework over another?
Dubravčíková, Klára ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
DUBRAVČÍKOVÁ, Klára. Models of cross-border data flow governance and their followers: Why do countries adopt one framework over another? Praha, 2022. 119 pages. Master's thesis (Mgr.). Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Science. Department of International Relations. Supervisors Dr. rer. pol. Michal Parízek, M.Sc., Ph.D. & Junprof. Dr. Jan Vogler. Abstract Currently, there are three different regulatory models of cross-border data flow, produced by three dominant actors in the international system - the United States of America, the European Union, and the People's Republic of China. As all three actively convey their model to other countries, posing new challenges to the global economy associated with the models' incompatibility, other countries face a policy-choice dilemma on what model to adopt. Consequently, the issue of mapping how the three approaches to data governance spread across the globe and exploring the rationales of states that adopt one of the three models arises. The thesis turns to this question and uses logistic regression analysis to find a correlation between the adoption of a specific cross-border data flow governance model and three sets of predictors that characterise the economic, social, and power relations between proponent-adopter pairs....
Coal and Conflict in Eastern Ukraine
Arthofer, Nicholas Roy ; Plechanovová, Běla (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
The goal of this work is to analyze the behavior of actors involved in the ceasefire set by the Minsk II protocols in the Donbas region of Ukraine. The study begins by explaining ceasefires from a theoretical perspective and are proven to be an integral form of state relations. Actors have options in ways to react to ceasefires, and act upon differing impulses when they are presented with a situation set by an existing ceasefire which is in effect. This decision-making process is highly convoluted, but because a ceasefire is often the difference between open conflict and a cessation of violence, it is crucial to understand each possible reaction, so as to give the parties involved the best chance at reducing violence. The Minsk II Protocols, signed on February 12th , 2015, were designed to reduce violence and tensions in the Eastern Donbas region. The legitimacy of the ceasefire was acknowledged, and yet fighting continued after it took effectiveness. This study seeks to show that despite this seemingly incongruent behavior, the decision to violate the ceasefire was rational at the time of the violations themselves. Rationality is described, Sovereignty is defined, and the study attempts to prove that due to the economic situation that could be separatists were confronted with, it was highly...
Examining United States' Presidential Perception of the Energy Security in Period 2001-2017: A Content Analysis
Mazač, Jan ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
Unprecedented expansion in U.S. shale oil and gas production since the mid-2000s, alias known as "shale revolution", has triggered a transformation of global energy markets and has altered many decades lasting geopolitical paradigms. However, whether and how such phenomenon affected U.S. governmental perception of energy security has not been addressed yet. With focus on the executive branch, this master's thesis attempts to do so and presents comprehensive and systematic descriptive account of perception of energy security and its evolution in 17-year period. Conceptualizing the perception of energy security in four measurable indicators, two quantitative methods, a humanly conducted and dictionary-based computer aided text analysis are exploited herein. Both analysis suggests that the U.S. presidential perception of energy security has been positively affected by this phenomenon and four decades long paradigm regarding the security of supply as a threat to national security has become obsolete. Furthermore, the number of statements, portraying the energy security negatively dropped by one fifth, and vice versa, the positive perception of the energy security augmented by factor four. The author anticipates that used methodological framework, especially the computer aided text analysis, serving as a useful...
The impact of a new scramble for Africa between the EU and China - a comparative case study of foreign direct investment in Senegal and Zambia
Mocák, Filip ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
The goal of this research is to shed light on the impact of European foreign direct investment and growing Chinese foreign direct investment in Sub-Saharan Africa through lenses of neocolonialism and orientalism. A case study analysis is utilized to grasp the topic appropriately. Two case studies were set - Senegal and Zambia case study. While Senegal serves predominantly as a case study for the impact of EU foreign direct investments, The case study of Zambia helps to understand how Chinese FDI inflow affects Sub-Saharan countries. Therefore, six hypotheses were outlined. This work researches the impact of FDI on the level of democracy represented by the democratic index of The Economist Intelligence Unit, business freedom embodied in The Heritage Foundation's economic freedom index, and stability of state symbolised by the fragile state index studied by The Fund for Peace. All three indexes above are available for free online. The correlation between EU FDI and level of democracy was confirmed while Chinese FDI negatively affects democratic development in studied countries. Next, European FDI positively affects the level of economic freedom in Senegal as well as Zambia. Nevertheless, increased Chinese FDI inflow to the countries deteriorated their economic freedom. Lastly, there is no clear...
