Student as a citizen? The approach of the Dutch political authorities towards students during the COVID-19 pandemic
Zápalová, Myriam ; Kozmanová, Irena (advisor) ; Štefek, Martin (referee)
The work examines the attitude of Dutch political power towards university students as citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through an analysis of meetings in the lower house of parliament (Tweede Kamer) dedicated to the developments surrounding the coronavirus, it investigates the conceptualizations of students as citizens that Members of Parliament explicitly or implicitly formulated during these debates, how these conceptualizations competed with each other, and their role in shaping the government's position versus the opposition's (or individual parties'), while also considering the context of the March 2021 elections. The COVID-19 pandemic proved an ideal source of information by compelling parties to explicitly express their value-based stances and engage in explicit debates on state support priorities. The thesis focused on four thematic areas of the (real or desired) relationship of political power to students as citizens: communication, prioritization, advocacy of interests, and the construction of the image of the student. The optic of the approach to students did not confirm a dividing line between government and opposition, but rather between government and parliament. The latter served as the main accelerator of the debate, setting an agenda that took into account students as a...
A transfer towards the explicit. Homosexuality in Czech translation of Dutch-language literature and its critical response
Frantál, Filip ; Kozmanová, Irena (advisor) ; T`Sjoen, Yves (referee)
This Master thesis aims to analyze Dutch-language literature with the topic of homosexuality in Czech translation, as well as the critical response to it. The research question of the thesis is based on the assumption that differences in the social attitudes towards homosexuality in various linguistic areas may lead to different approaches to treating the topic in the process of translation of literary works between these areas, or to differences in the critics and readers' approaches to these works, all of the above based on contrasts in the circumstances of social, scientific, cultural, political and legislative development. In the linguistic area characterized by a lower degree of social acceptability of homosexuality (i.e. the Czech-language area), an emphasis on the topic of homosexuality in literary works may be encountered as part of the critical response as opposed to the linguistic area with a higher degree of attained emancipation (i.e. the Dutch-language area). The shift in the reception of the work can be caused not only by intentional or unintentional techniques of the translator and by difference in the respective linguistic concepts, but also by extratextual strategies including the public presentation of the work. The research question is tested based on an analysis of three chosen...
Frederick William, elector of Brandenburg and the estates of Cleves-Mark in the years 1640-1654. Estates as actors of international politics and the ruler's "minimal programme"
Kozmanová, Irena ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee)
The study deals with the relations between Frederick William, the Elector of Brandenburg, and the Estates of the western countries within his composite state, Cleves-Mark, during the 1640 and the first half of the 1650. Using the analysis of the means which they used for their mutual interaction, it tries to follow the general strategies of both parts as well as their political concepts. The attention is focused on one of the main controversial points between the ruler and the Estates - the foreign policy of the Estates, which was turned mainly towards Netherlands, towards the Estates of Jülich-Berg and towards the central institutions of the Holy Roman Empire. While the Estates considered their foreign policy activities to be completely legitimate means of protection of their own rights, the elector saw them as a threat to his sovereignty, and therefore he operated forcefully against them. Part of the so called "minimal programme" of the ruler, which was a collection of requirements he considered necessary to enforce his own sovereignty, were attempts to secure his own monopoly on the execution of foreign policy. Within the relations between the ruler and the Estates during the pursued period dominated consensual strategy, based in negotiations and agreements.
The analysis of LGBT role models in modern Dutch children's books. Children's literature as a support tool for emotional and social intelligence.
Bezecná, Kateřina ; Kozmanová, Irena (advisor) ; Zegers, Twan (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the representation of LGBT role models in modern Dutch children's literature. The thesis is based on theoretical studies dealing with the influence of reading fiction on development of children's emotional and social intelligence and the reduction of prejudice. The bachelor thesis examines the theoretical background used in the Dutch campaign Lees met andermans ogen and the initiative Queerboeken. The results show that the strategies used in the campaigns correspond with theoretical studies proving a direct link between reading fiction and development of reader's ability to recognize what other people think and how they feel. They also show that the books recommended by the campaigns, mediate the indirect intergroup contact and support the acceptance of LGBT members. The analysis of the primary sample of books used in the campaigns indicates that literary techniques used in children's books support the development of reader's cognitive abilities and help in reducing prejudice against LGBT.
The deaf character as "the other" in the Dutch literature at the beginning of the 21st Century
Šmejkalová, Klára ; Sedláčková, Lucie (advisor) ; Kozmanová, Irena (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the perception and self-perception of deaf characters in Dutch literature of the beginning of the 21st Century. Three books are analyzed: Ik heb mijn naam terug by Yvonne Kemink, Doof by Siska Mulder and Kolja by Arthur Japin. The methodology is based on the work of Toni Morrison and Maaike Meijer who compiled eight 'othering' strategies. Meijer uses them to analyze the (post)colonial literature, in this thesis, they are adjusted to deafness. It turned out that deaf characters show certain similarities with the 'other' as it is known from the (post)colonial theory. They also show that the situation described in Ik heb mijn naam terug is different from the situation in the other two books. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Ideological Intervention in the Early Modern Period. The Case of the Dutch Republic and the Estates of Cleves-Mark in the 1640s and 1650s
Kozmanová, Irena ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Bůžek, Václav (referee) ; van Nierop, Henk (referee)
(EN) Ideological Intervention in the Early Modern Period. The Case of the Dutch Republic and the Estates of Cleves-Mark in the 1640s and 1650s 1648 is traditionally considered a major break in international relations. This thesis deals with the Dutch interventions in Cleves-Mark in the period before and after the Treaties of Westphalia and sets out to test some of these traditional assumptions. Rejecting the concept of the "Westphalian" sovereignty, it advocates a relational view based on mutual recognition. Accordingly, it focuses on the negotiations of the three subjects under scrutiny - the Dutch Republic as the intervening power, the Estates of Cleves-Mark as instigators and beneficiaries of the intervention, and the Elector of Brandenburg as the legitimate ruler - about their sovereignty, as they took shape in the arena of the "courtly public", especially in diplomacy. In the first part I argue that the Dutch Republic reacted very conservatively to the pressure to legitimize its role as a new member of the highly monarchical "courtly public". I also examined the impact of the domestic political system and diplomatic ceremonial on the external performance of the Dutch Republic, thereby uncovering the particular role of the Province of Gelderland. In three case studies of direct diplomatic...

"Way too velvet revolution." The analysis of failure in facing the Roma community issue between 1948 and 2012
Poprik, Anton ; Kozmanová, Irena (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee)
The diploma thesis "Way too velvet revolution." The analysis of failure in facing the Roma community issue between 1948 and 2012 tries to clarify the causes of failure in facing Romani people issue in the Czech Republic, considering period of the last sixty years and two political regimes - former communism and latter democracy, putting great emphasis on the aspect of bureaucracy. The very first part outlines current problematic issues and the way they are solved by activities of the Czech public administration bodies. The second part focuses on the issue itself and its shape from its beginning in the second half of the 40's, describes crucial approaches of the communistic regime and their success; this is followed by a completely different point of view in the 90's, in the system of democracy. The institutional system analysis in the last part of the thesis discovers the causes of the long-term failure of both political regimes when trying to face the Roma community issue and proves that the causes of the mentioned failures before and after 1989, as far as bureaucratic point of view is concerned, differ less than expected. Using published archival materials and individual studies as well as official up-to-date sources discovers the existence of state interest cyclicality together with inappropriate institutional layout that makes any successful policy implementation impossible, regardless of political regime.
