Jiří Fränkl: Hořící nebesa/The Burning Skies - self-translation or two text versions?

This master's thesis focuses on a bilingual Czech-English collection of short stories Hořící nebesa/The Burning Skies by Jiří Fränkl. It creates a profile of the author and studies the bilingual text questions of self-translation, bilingual writing and identity, which serves as a basis for analysing both language versions and examining their differences with regard to the author's personality.

V roce 1983 se v kanadském Torontu při operním představení poprvé nad jevištěm objevily titulky s překladem zpívaného textu. Titulkování se ujalo a postupně rozšířilo do operních domů celého světa. Dnes si už bez nich divák návštěvu opery ani nedokáže představit. Spolu s novou technologií vznikl i nový typ překladatelské činnosti, velice vyhraněné a náročné. Snad vzhledem k relativní novosti tohoto jevu anebo proto, že k umění neodmyslitelně patří pluralita názorů a přístupů, je překlad operních titulků doposud disciplínou poměrně neustálenou, s řadou argumentů pro i proti, ale i odlišných přístupů k samotným překladatelským operacím. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zmapovat historický vývoj a současný stav operního titulkování v České republice i v zahraničí z hlediska uměleckého, společenského i technologického a nahlédnout překlad operních titulků jak prizmatem vědeckých oborů lingvistických a translatologických, tak z hlediska hudební vědy i konkrétní divadelní praxe. Titulky se pochopitelně pořizují i pro účely televizních záznamů operních představení, avšak hlavním objektem zájmu této práce jsou titulky doprovázející živé operní představení. The humor of Monty Pyton and the Limitations of its translation

This paper focuses on the translation of audiovisual humour. I have analysed Petr Palouš's translation of Monty Python's Flying Circus. The translator of audiovisual humour has to deal with the same issues and problems as the translator of literature, that is he has to find equivalents to word plays, idioms, register and so on, but at the same time he also has to comply with the restrictions of audiovisual medium. I have identified the most common translation problems when translating humour and audiovisual texts and possible strategies of their translation into the target language, and then analysed how Palouš dealt with these cruces translatorum when translating the Flying Circus.

This thesis consists of a transaltion of a chapter written by the American feminist art historian Linda Nochlin called Women Artists Then and Now: Painting, Sculpture and the Image of the Self from Global Feminism: New Directions in Contemporary Art and a commentary on various aspects of the process. The concept of translation was created upon the basis of an extratextual and intratextual analysis, and the following principles for work with the text were layed down: The fact, that the percipient of the original and the translation text differ in their cultural backgrounds, is considered in the translation, and names which are less known in Europe are accompanied with intratextual explanatory notes. The publicistic genre disposes of different means in the source and the target languague. The high level of expresivity and subjectivity of the originial text is substituded by more formal means in Czech which, nonetheless, provide the same function and therefore represent functional substitution. These steps lead to preservation of the thematic content and the effect of the translation on the percipient is the same as that of the original text on the original reader.
Czech translation of dialects in feature films and TV series

The thesis studies Czech dubbing of Misfits and Futurama TV series with special attention to the method of translation of regional varieties of English. The first part summarizes the latest theoretical approach to translation of marginal varieties in dubbing and literature. This overview is followed by an analysis of language varieties used in the original series and their dubbed versions in order to define their role and function. The second part of the thesis examines decision-making processes employed in the process of translation of the regional varieties and presents the results of a survey of spectators' opinion on the translation method employed. Based on the survey results we compared spectators' evaluation of the original series with their evaluation of the dubbed versions, as well as markings of characters using regional varieties with markings of those using standard language. Last but not least, markings of the dubbed versions in the regions where the variety in question is spoken were compared with markings of these versions in the rest of the Czech Republic. The aim of the comparisons was to get an overview of recipients' opinions on the method of translation applied.
The birth of an industry

The aim of this thesis is to translate the chapter The birth of an industry written by Douglas Bruster for the publication The Cambridge History of British Theatre. This thesis further contains a commentary of the translation. The first part of the commentary is devoted to translation analysis of the original text, the second part concentrates on description of the translation problems and their solutions. This thesis is concluded by a typology of translation shifts.

The aim of my thesis was to translate into Czech the first twenty standard pages from the chapter La la la Through a New Lens: Music Talks to America by John McWhorter, and provide the translation with a commentary. The commentary comprises four parts: The first part is a translation analysis, presenting extra- and intratextual factors of the source text, and outlining conception of the translation; the second part contents typology of problems and challenges, consisting in expression and word non-equivalence, cultural non-equivalence, and translation of specific features of the source text; the third part summarizes the types of shifts occuring in the translation, and the last part describes the translation method. The first part of this thesis is a translation of the Preface, the Preamble, the first 15 Laws and Appendices A and B from The Laws of Cricket. The aim of this translation is that it will be used by Czech speakers while playing cricket in the Czech Republic or elsewhere. Cricket in the Czech Republic is not a widespread sport and thus several new Czech terms had to be created. The second part analyzes extratextual and intratextual factors of the original text according to Christiane Nord, describes the main translation problems and their solutions, shows the translation method and lists shifts which occurred in the translation.

The object of this bachelor thesis is to translate the first chapter called A history of seduction from Mark Tungate's Fashion brands: branding style from Armani to Zara and to describe theoretically the process. The thesis is comprised of three fundamental parts - translation, commentary and the attached source text. The commentary is divided into four parts. The first one contains an analysis of the source text for the purpose of translation, the second part describes the selected translation method and the relation between the translated text and the original communication situation. The third part of the commentary comprises typology of the problems that occurred during the process of translation and the last part describes the necessary shifts that have been made in the translation.
Sam Shepard: Buried Child

One of the reasons for writing this thesis was to help readers and theatregoers better understand Shepard's plays and to let them see, at least partly, his intentions. Yet, to ask for a straightforward explanation or an unambiguous ending would mean to completely misunderstand the author. Samuel Shepard the playwright, actor, director, screenwriter, poet and musician as well as a cowboy and shaman - "a New World shaman" - is anything but a piece of cake. To know this much might be enough unless you plan to translate or direct one of his plays. And for these very purposes, I have decided to prepare a roadmap for understanding Samuel Shepard Rogers III. My goal was to show three main influences that helped to form Shepard's style. First, we will travel with young Sam eastwards all the way to New York in order to discover a brave new world. Only fifteen years later, we will set the sails in the same direction again, this time to accompany an unheard-off success - an Off-Off- Broadway show moving from San Francisco to New York to be eventually awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Unfortunately, this child prodigy we came with is dying; indeed, it is already a Buried Child. After twenty more years, Shepard will revise the text and claim that "it's now a better play".
