Representation of female protagonists on posters of Disney's animated movies

This thesis deals with the semiotic analysis of the representation of female protagonists in Disney animated film posters from the first in 1937 to the present. The theoretical part of the thesis is divided into thematic and semiotic parts. The thematic part deals with the concepts related to the topic of feminism, historical development of the position of women, film posters, representation of women in film, but also with key aspects in the development of Disney. In the semiotic part, the thesis focuses on semiotic analytical concepts suitable for the following research. The research part of the thesis analyses a research sample consisting of eight posters for animated films. Using semiotic tools, the analysis is carried out with regard to the conditions of the creation of the films, the plot of the stories, the characteristics of the main characters, the image mode, colors and text. These findings are subsequently compared against each other and the conclusions of these findings are interpreted on the basis of this comparison. The conclusion of the thesis summarises how female heroes are represented in the posters and how their representation change depending on the time of creation and the development phase of feminism.

Semiotic Specifics of Media Contents

This dissertation explores specifics of media semiotics as a method of media content analysis. The main research sample consists of mediasemiotic studies, in the second place of studies within other applied semiotics and methodological publications on the subject. The research method is a discourse analysis, done on all levels from micro- to macrostructures, specifically on levels of language, intertextuality, narrativity, discussions, discourse models and discourses. The analysis also took into account interdiscoursive relations between media semiotics and media studies, theoretic semiotics, and other related disciplines, as well as the question whether bringing concepts from these fields into media semiotics involves some transformations of these concepts, and how are these transformations related to the nature of the given discourses. The main contribution of this dissertation is introduction of the principle of modularity. It is a specific way of employing analytical functions into an analytical engine, which was present in all researched media semiotic studies, but also in the studies which belong to other applied semiotics (movie semiotics, anthropological semiotics, semiotics of law), and to discourse analysis as well. The contribution of UJC CSAV and its predecessors to the Czech linguistical science (history of UJC CSAV and its predecessors as seen in archival materials)

This year the Institute of the Czech Language AS CR (Ustav pro jazyk cesky AV CR) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of foundation of its direct predecessor, the Office of the Dictionary of the Czech Language (Kancelar Slovniku jazyka ceskeho, KSJC) which provided the administrative background for an ambitious lexicographic project launched already in 1905 by the committee for lexicography and dialectology the Czech Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph for sciences, literature and art, to become the Czech Academy for Sciences and Art (CAVU) in 1918. Although much was done between the wars to establish a state-funded language institute, i.e. an institution which would unify the all-encompassing research of language and systematic work with the national language, for financial reasons the Czech Language Institute was established only in 1946. Six years later, the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (CSAV) was founded and incorporated, among others, the Institute of the Czech Language. During the years, the structure of the Institute underwent various changes which were not merely a response to linguistic needs but also to the events of the time relating to the strengthening of the totalitarian communist power. On the beginning of the institucionalization of Czech linguistic research

In 2011, Ústav pro jazyk český AV ČR (the Institute of the Czech Language) was celebrating the 100th anniversary of the foundation of its direct predecessor, Kancelář Slovníku jazyka českého (the Office of the Dictionary of the Czech Language) which provided the administrative background for an ambitious lexicographic project launched already in 1905 by the committee for lexicography and dialectology of the Czech Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph for sciences, literature and art, to become Česká Akademie věd a umění (Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts) in 1918. Altough much was done between the wars to establish a state-funded language institute, i.e. an institution, which would unify the research on language and systematically work with the national language, for financial reasons the Institute of the Czech Language was established only in 1946. This article aims to present some of the lesser known - or even unknown - facts related to the Office of the Dictionary of the Czech Language based on archival resources.
