Reflection of the Czechoslovak Monetary Policy in the thoughts and writings of German-speaking Economist that worked at the Charles-Ferdinand University during 1918 - 1938
Zatřepálková, Hana ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Doležalová, Antonie (referee)
The thesis focuses on German-speaking economists, specifically Oskar Engländer, Alfred Amonn, and Hugo Müller, who taught economically oriented subjects at the German University in Prague during the interwar period. Through a combination of historical research and textual analysis of their works, the thesis explores the extent to which these economists expressed interest in the monetary policy of Czechoslovakia and its notable figures, Alois Rašín and Karel Engliš. Additionally, it investigates the predominant themes in their works during this period and provides insights into the potential applications of computer-based textual analysis in the field of the history of economic thought.
Corporate Social Responsibility and tax haven use: Evidence from the Central and Eastern Europe
Sovičová, Veronika ; Doležalová, Antonie (advisor) ; Janský, Petr (referee)
The notion that businesses have certain responsibilities towards the society beyond the profit maximizing principle known as the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been devoted increasing attention in the academic field. Prior literature has found a link between firms' CSR engagement and the use of tax havens, which are generally known for offering some form of preferential tax treatment. The aim of this thesis is to examine this relationship in the context of the Central and Eastern European countries. To perform the analysis, we collected data on 79 unique Central and Eastern European firms from 11 countries for the year 2020. Employing the ordered logistic regression methodology with CSR performance as categorical response variable and a tax haven user dummy as the main dependent variable of interest, we discovered that there is a significant relationship between CSR and tax haven use. It can be thus claimed that CSR has already developed sufficiently for such relationship to emerge in the post- communist region. Moreover, we find that this relationship is negative. This would suggest that the probability of being socially responsible is lower in tax haven using firms. Specifically, we provide evidence that tax haven using firms are more than 60% less likely to have higher CSR score. Our...

Polášek, Martin ; Havelka, Miloš (advisor) ; Doležalová, Antonie (referee) ; Kárník, Zdenek (referee)
Josef Macek and the Programmatic Debates in the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party (ČSDSD) from 1924 to 1938. This thesis deals with the programmatic debates in the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party (ČSDSD) from 1924 to 1938. The debate is analyzed in three ways: Firstly, its chronological development is given same as the link between the various topics discussed. The second part researches the structural features of the debate (external context, institutional environment, social profile of discussants, the structural cleavages like generation conflict or the relationship between theorists and decison-makers etc.). In the final part the content differences among discussants are analyzed in respect to a few selected issues (the foundation of socialism, the role of intelligence in the socialist party, the relationship to the state, the evolutionary way to socialism). Marxism is understood as the primary axis of the debate . In relation to it I speak about three intraparty streams, which were repeatedly clashing and which differed not only in the approach to Marxism as such or in solution forms which resulted from it, but also in their generational affiliation and its influence on the programmatic profile of the party as a whole: The left stream, the youngest generation, was based on Marxism with the...

Sochor, Vojtěch ; Doležalová, Antonie (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee)
The goal of the thesis is to compare the profitability of Czechoslovak New Wave movies with the rest of the movies made in 1960s in Czechoslovakia. The comparison uses statistical tests and visualising using boxplots. The comparison consists of three steps; the comparison of gains, the comparison of production costs and the comparison of attendance. The comparison of production costs is supplemented by comparison of the exterior filming typical for Czechoslovak New Wave and by regression model showing which factors had influence on production costs. Among the factors are exterior filming, atelier filming, whole production time and the model contains also dummies: film color, film format and whether the movie is Czechoslovak New Wave movie or not. This analysis is put into Czechoslovak political and economic background since 1945 to 1970. The thesis briefly describes the Czechoslovak New Wave movement and describes the development of Czechoslovak film industry since 1945 to 1970 and its indicators such as number of cinemas and seats, attendance and number of produced movies. 1
Theoretical conceptions of Czechoslovak transformation: Factors that influenced the creation of transformation strategy
Krausová, Tereza ; Doležalová, Antonie (advisor) ; Schwarz, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis Theoretical conceptions of Czechoslovak transformation: Factors that influenced the creation of transformation strategy focuses on the Czechoslovak economic transformation in the early 1990s and describes the process of creating the Czechoslovak transformation strategy. The thesis answers the question of whether the selected topics and their discussions conducted on the pages of the scientific journal Politická ekonomie were reflected in the final transformation strategy and the implemented reform measures between the years 1991-93. The topics of labor productivity and economic growth, imbalance, price system and price liberalization were chosen for the analysis. First, the thesis focuses on the descriptive analysis of the journal's articles from 1989-93 that discuss selected topics, and maps in detail the development of their content and the opinions of their authors. In the following chapter, the thesis compares findings from the descriptive analysis with measures presented in the final Czechoslovak transformation scenario and with the practical policy in 1991-93. Based on the comparison, the thesis concludes that in the case of the topic of imbalance, the opinions of the authors coincided with the planned measures and there is, therefore, a possibility that a discussion of...
Economic and Political Motivations for French Direct Investment in the Czechoslovak Republic During the Interwar Period: Schneider-Creusot's Activities in the Czechoslovak Republic.
Fairchild, David ; Doležalová, Antonie (advisor) ; Benáček, Vladimír (referee)
This study investigates the significant rates of French direct investment in the Czechoslovak Republic during the interwar years, specifically from the end of the First World War until the beginning of the Great Depression. It explores the intersection between external factors that occurred on the European continent and internal factors within the Czechoslovak Republic that drove French direct investment in the new republic during this period. This descriptive thesis uses two case studies of the French economic giant Schneider-Creusot's activities in the Czechoslovak Republic to better understand those motivations. The results from the case studies reveal that the Czechoslovak Republic offered a unique combination of economic stability, natural strategic location, and notable levels of historic productivity. These factors, coupled with the outcome of the Russian Revolution and the Treaty of Versailles, attracted high levels of French direct investment from 1918 to 1929. French foreign policy in the region was driven more heavily by economic fears and opportunities than by political ones. Economic History of Authors' Rights and Creative Industries in Czechoslovakia
Moravcová, Hana ; Doležalová, Antonie (advisor) ; Miskell, Peter (referee) ; Fava, Valentina (referee) ; Kvizda, Martin (referee)
Economic History of Authors' Rights and Creative Industries in Czechoslovakia Hana Moravcová Dissertation thesis Abstract The thesis analyzes the impact of cultural policy on creative industries in Czechoslovakia. The first chapter is devoted to economics of authors' rights. It identifies inconsistencies in its three main assumptions, that undermine proper understanding of the effects of copyright and authors' rights. It provides a framework for optimization behavior of authors, that respects that market transactions between authors, users and consumers take place not on one, but on many markets where a work is spread. The second chapter reveals that the emergence of the Authors' Rights Act in interwar Czechoslovakia was the result of the influence of particular interest groups. The most important organizations are identified. Their mutual interconnection and linkage to the state facilitated their ability to directly influence the wording of the new law and its practical application. They used favorable conditions, like interventionist thinking of the society. Moreover, Czechoslovakia had to implement an international copyright treaty, part of the peace treaty signed by Czechoslovakia after the Great War. The third chapter consists of two case studies about creative industries in Czechoslovakia. The first...
Economic Analysis of the Business Activity of the Selected Banks in Czechoslovakia during the Great Depression (1929-33)
Bosáková, Diana ; Doležalová, Antonie (advisor) ; Moravcová, Hana (referee)
This thesis deals with the analysis of the economic situation of selected five Czechoslovak banks: Živnostenská banka, Tatra banka, Anglo-československá banka, Banka Československých legií and Agrárna banka during the Great Depression. Through the available data from 1922 - 1938, the development of the behavior and efficiency of banks in the pre-crisis and during the period is proven. The aim of this work is to describe the situation of banks before the onset of the economic crisis and to identify the behavior of bank management during the Great Depression using four financial indicators. Financial indicators examine the profitability, liquidity and solvency of banks. The results of the work showed that banks behaved inefficiently already before the crisis, which is indicated by low values of return on equity and assets. The ratio of loans to deposits due to the crisis has fallen in almost all banks, but points to the inefficient behavior of some of the Czechoslovak banks as part of low lending before the crisis. Although none of the Czechoslovak banks collapsed during the crisis, this thesis points to the inefficient behavior of bank management, which relied heavily on state aid.
