Title: Stochastical inference in the model of extreme events Author: Jan Dienstbier Department/Institute: Department of probability and mathematical statistics Supervisor of the doctoral thesis: Doc. RNDr. Jan Picek, CSc. Abstract: The thesis deals with extremal aspects of linear models. We provide a brief explanation of extreme value theory. The attention is then turned to linear models Yn×1 = Xn×pβp×1 + En×1 with the errors Ei ∼ F, i = 1, . . . , n fulfilling the do- main of attraction condition. We examine the properties of the regression quantiles of Koenker and Basset (1978) under this setting we develop theory dealing with extremal characteristics of linear models. Our methods are based on an approximation of the regression quantile process for α ∈ [0, 1] expanding older results of Gutenbrunner et al. (1993). Our result holds in [α∗ n, 1 − α∗ n] with a better rate of α∗ n → 0 than the other approximations described previously in the literature. Consecutively we provide an ap- proximation of the tails of regression quantile. The approximations of the tails enable to develop theory of the smooth functionals, which are used to establish a new class of estimates of extreme value index. We prove T(F−1 n (1 − knt/n)) is consistent and asymp- totically normal estimate of extreme for any T member of the class....
Green Chambers and Mural Painting in Secular Spaces at the End of the Middle Ages
Dienstbier, Jan ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Jakubec, Ondřej (referee) ; Gerát, Ivan (referee)
The thesis presents a detailed analysis of the late medieval murals in the so-called 'green chamber' of Žirovnice Castle and similar late-medieval mural paintings. Compared to the earlier literature the study focuses on the interrelations between the scenes depicted in the 'green chamber': the Judgement of Paris, Judith beheading Holofernes, the exemplum An Old Woman Is Worse than the Devil as well as an image which was previously described as the Judgement of Solomon (perhaps rather a parable about legitimate and illegitimate progeny). They are compared with other depictions of these themes and their treatment in contemporary literature. These comparisons link them with the popular concept of a critique of the power of women (Weibermacht). In Žirovnice, and similarly elsewhere, this concept was connected to the allegory of the transcience of love and the ephemeral nature of the world overall. The ostensible genre depictions of the hunt and tournament can be interpreted in this sense as well. This is demonstrated by numerous details subverting the meaning of these images. The study then compares Žirovnice to other similar murals in Bohemia and addresses the questions of their function as well as of the art-historical phenomenon of 'green chambers' as various secular murals are called following the...
Henricus de Isernia from the view of his epistolar dictamina
Dienstbier, Jan ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
The thesis deals with the personality and the oeuvre of Henry of Isernia (Henricus de Isernia) an Italian emigrant who came to Prague at the beginning of the seventies of 13th century. In the introductory chapters we summarize the literature dealing with the subject so far, introduce the ars dictaminis, a medieval theory of letter writing, and try to nd Henry's place in the evolution of the discipline. One of the main topic of the thesis is the question how ars dictaminis appeared in Czech lands and whether played any role on the court of Ottokar II. From this point we move our attention to the Henry's involvement in the ghibellin movement of the late 13th century. Finally, we examine the cultural aspects of selected pieces from the epistolary, namely the set of erotic dictaminas speaking about the palace of Venus. We argue that they have to be viewed as satyric a anticlerical pamphlets and we show their connection with other pieces of the epistolary.
