Human capital and the transition in Serbia : accumulation, allocation and implications for development

Developed industrial economies have faced challenging transformations over the past decade, stemming from the increased global interdependence of economic systems and greater reliance on rapidly changing technology. Along with the reassessment of the bases of modern society came the realization that human knowledge and ability to learn have become a key asset for development and growth. As developed economies reform to adapt to this new reality, they are joined by post-communist countries facing added challenges of political and economic adjustments. This study looks at the paths open to the country that was among the last to enter this process in Europe. Serbia's current situation with respect to human capital is assessed and examined in light of the global processes taking place around it, and its unique challenges are presented. The conceptual approach of the study involves looking at Serbia's human resources in terms of their quality, quantity, and distribution between sectors of differing productivity. This is done through a survey of educational reforms, skilled emigration, and forces determining the allocation of human capital. The thesis consists of two parts: translation of a half of Savage Continent, a book by British historian Keith Lowe, with key topics including the universal destruction of Europe caused by the Second World War and the subsequent wave of vengeance that swept across Europe in its aftermath; and a commentary on the translation, beginning with an introduction of the author and his style, subsequently providing extensive overview of the development of the Czech discourse about the expulsion of Germans, translation analysis of the original English text of a chapter concerning the expulsion of Germans and its position in the discourse, as well as a look t the target reader and reception, and finally describing various translation problems that occurred while translating this chapter, including not only linguistic, but also poetic-ideological problems.

The master's thesis The United Kingdom and the European Integration: Influence of foreign trade and monetary politics on the British attitude towards Europe between the years 1941 and 1973 explores the relationship of the United Kingdom towards European integration in a period from the end of the Second World War to the point of becoming a member of the European Economic Community in 1973. The relationship of the United Kingdom with Europe is studied by analysing international monetary and trade politics of the United Kingdom, its economic standing in the world and comparative strength of Pound Sterling. All of these variables played a key role in the development of aforementioned relationship. The aim of the thesis is to ascertain the role played by international monetary and trade politics of the United Kingdom in relation to European integration. The research itself is divided into three chapters and overall defined and underpinned by conjoining two theories of hegemonic stability and aspects of realist school of political economy. Great Britain – Renegade or Saviour of the European Union?

This work analyses development of economic and politic relationships of Great Britain with the European Communities (EC) and the European Union (EU) since the beginning of European integration till the contemporary debt crisis of the Eurozone. It deals with British European policies before and after Britain's accession to the EC and puts emphasis on British influence over negotiations about the main policies and institutional changes of the EC and EU, as well as on British internal views on European integration, first of all on often misunderstood British euroscepticism. From the analysis of historical and contemporary data author infers not only possible scenarios of the future relationship between the Great Britain and Europe, but also the influence of this member state on the development of the EU.

Upper Turonian and Lower Coniacian calcareous nannoplankton stratigraphy in the borehole V 800 Střeleč, Bohemian Cretaceous Basin Number of biostratigraphic studies has been performed within the Upper Cretaceous platform sediments of the NW Europe, however, the problem of Turonian-Coniacan boundary has not yet been satisfactorily resolved using available methods in the field of micropaleontology. The proposed thesis has described the species composition of calcareous nannoplankton assemblages in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, across the Upper Turonian- Lower Coniacian interval, focusing on the stratigraphically and paleoecologically important species. Seventy-three taxa of calcareous nannofossils in the studied material have been determined and signifiant species have been discussed (Marthasterites furcatus, Kamptnerius magnificus, Lucianorhabdus sp., Braarudosphaera sp., Nannoconus sp., Watznaueria barnesae, Uniplanarius gothicus, Quadrum gartneri, Thoracosphaera operculata). For purposes of this thesis, a suitable material from the V 800 Střeleč borehole, one of the key cretaceous profil in the Český ráj area, was obtained.

From machine to icon:car in popculture from the 60s

An automobile is one of the most important phenomenons of modern technology. Since its origins, it has profoundly shaped our physical, economic, politic, social, cultural and media habitat. The objective of this Master thesis is to analyze the evolution of the role of the car in the popculture from the 60s onwards and its dimensions, with a primary focus on Anglosaxon culture, with excursions to Asia and continental Europe, primarily Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic. The core foundation of the thesis lies in the analysis of the popcultural genres, selected films, TV series, computer games and comic books. The main purpose of the thesis is to reflect upon the identity and conceptual shifts of car, going from a mere transport machine through a vehicle of product placement towards the concept of the icon, a narrative hero of popculture. The hypothesis to verify is that the car has become an essential part of the popculture itself, reflected in many various dimensions: car as a toy, car as a friend, car as a status symbol, car as a narrative extension of the hero and finally, car as a hero and subject. This master´s thesis “The Localization of Foreign Direct Investment in the region of Middle Europe“ is focused on localization of foreign direct investment in the region of Middle Europe and possiblities of making easier localization decision. The first part of the thesis summarizes teoretical knowledge of foreign direct investment, their difinitions, typology and effects on economy. The second part is focused on the analysis of localization factors of strategic services sector. On the analysis basis, in the final part is created the model, which can be used for easier localization decision making between economies of Middle Europe. Afterwards the localization of a foreign direct investment is projected and analysed.

Mesuring of economic performance of regions

The aim of this diploma thesis is to cover the catching up with the economic level among the countries of middle and eastern Europe. More accurately it analyses GDP per capita and household income per capita as one of the key economic indicators. The thesis concretely focuses on analysis of beta and sigma convergence and cluster analysis of the mentioned regions and concurrently at the background of the analysis explains some theoretical terms from areas of economics, econometrics and statistics. The analysis was concluded in IBM SPSS programme which belongs to the most complex, user friendly and professionally often used expert tools. The data for the analysis were used from Eurostat.

Feeding ecology of the Stone marten (Martes foina) in Europe.

During last decades, the stone marten, Martes foina (Erxleben, 1777) became a synanthropic animal and its population is increasing. This review is summarizing the knowledge about its feeding habits throughout Europe. In the first part the methods are introduced which are used for study of feeding ecology, for example scat analysis or the analysis of stomach and gut content. The way of calculations of some characteristic values most frequently used in study of feeding ecology of marten are described. In the second part the geographic variability and the seasonal changes in the marten's food in the different parts of Europe are analyzed. It seems that the type of habitat, in which the stone marten lives, affects its feeding habits. The differences its feeding in the urban and rural habitats are shown. There are intrahabitat differences too. In the third part of this work the main components of marten's food are described which include various small vertebrates, invertebrates (mostly insects) and fruit, and some marten's food specifics are discussed. Comparison of the Impact of Education on Economic Growth in Subregions of Europe

This thesis examines the impact of investments in human capital via additional years of schooling on economic growth. The main aim is to verify the hypothesis about expected positive impact of additional year of schooling on economic growth in subregions of Europe and that the impact will be bigger in subregions of Northern and Western Europe. Human capital theory and economic theory of growth are introduced as well as theoretical model of economic growth that developed by author to analyse the impact. In order to investigate the theory on a data, an econometric model is introduced. The model assumes that the real GDP per worker depends on the stock of physical capital per worker and average years of schooling of worker. Data set that is used for the estimation consists of observations for 34 countries from 1955 to 2010 in 5 years intervals. Using OLS and TSLS estimation methods, 10 regressions are then run with two of them for the entire dataset and two of them being run for each subregion apart, for the purpose of comparison. The results of regression for the entire dataset confirm the expected positive impact of additional years of schooling in Europe region, the finding also agrees with the previous empirical literature (Bassanini and Scarpetta 2001, Soto 2009, Barro and Lee 2013) as well as with the theory of human capital and economic growth. In addition to this, the results of regressions that were run for subregions apart suggest that this impact is heavily related to the quality of education, which tends to be better in Northern and Western Europe, where the impact of additional years of schooling was confirmed separately as well. These findings correspond with the previous empirical literature of economic growth of Soto (2009) and Hanushek and Woessmann (2012), where the quality of education turned out to be crucial as well.
