Essays on International Economics
Stančík, Juraj ; Jurajda, Štěpán (advisor) ; Orlowski, Lucjan (referee) ; Peter Sabirianova, Klara (referee)
This dissertation focuses on various economic problems of central European countries in transition. Membership in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and an inflow of foreign capital belong to the biggest challenges these countries have to face. The first essay therefore focuses on exchange-rate stability in five new members of the European Union (EU). This stability is not only a criterion for joining the EMU but also a fundamental property of stable economic development. However, there are several factors that could slow or interrupt these countries' EMU-integration process. For this reason, this essay analyzes key factors contributing to euro exchange-rate volatility in the new EU members during the period 1999-2004: economic openness, the "news" factor, and the exchange-rate regime. A TARCH (threshold autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity) model is employed to model the volatility of exchange rates. Although this essay focuses on each country separately, in general the results suggest that economic openness has a calming effect on exchange-rate volatility, news significantly affects volatility, and flexible regimes experience higher degrees of volatility. The extent of all these effects varies substantially across countries, however. The remaining of this dissertation is then devoted to...

Changing perceptions of waqf in the Egyptian society (1805-1953)
Melčák, Miroslav ; Veselý, Rudolf (advisor) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee) ; Mendel, Miloš (referee)
Waqf (pI. 'awqi() emerged in the first century after the birth of Islam, and spread to the whole of the Middle East to become one of the most distinctive features of its societies. Although waqfs played many different socio-economic roles, their significance has up to now usually been described by means of the dichotomic concept distinguishing between waqf chayri (charitable endowment) and waqf 'ahli (family endowment), the first having been established as a kind of charity to provide free social services to the population (mainly mosques and madrasas), the latter as a tool for evading inheritance rules (ilm al-jarii'i), which, if applied, would cause the fragmentation of properties into uneconomical units. This concept originated in the period of the 19th and 20th centuries when the new legislation was beeing produced in Middle East countries to restrain waqf as an obstacle to social and economic progress. The thesis traces a history of this dichotomic concept in the context of modem Egypt. First it discusses the waqf policy of Mul).ammad cAli in the first half of the 19th century, then the development of the central waqfbureau up to the end of the 19th century, and the process of conferring property rights to the land which caused an unprecedented expansion of family-like endowments during the first half...

The structure of coordination in a dependency description: with special attention to the coordination of unlike categories
Šindlerová, Jana ; Hošnová, Eva (referee) ; Panevová, Jarmila (advisor)
In this work, theoretical aspects of a descriptive approach to the coordination of unlike categories are studied. According to the theory the author adopts, the so called Functional Generative Description, the different semantic values of coordinated nodes in a dependency tree (called fimctors) are referred to as unlike categories. The author offers constraints (of a kind) for generating coordinative structures with unlike categories. These constraints are based on the relation between a functor and its dominating verb with respect to the valency structure of the verb. The core of the theory is the fact that a coordination of an argument position and an adjunct position is forbidden as a rule. Considering the proposed constraints, a decision is made, which of the possible structures are to be represented as direct phrasal coordinations and which of them as coordinations on the level of the dominating verb. With respect to the aims of the work, the author submits her own proposal for categorisation of coordinative constructions according to the valency properties of the coordinated positions. The work aspires to uproot the established opinion that basically there are no syntactic rule s for the coordination of unIi ke categories.

Diplomatic relations between the USA and the People's Republic of China
Čtvrtníček, Ondřej ; Veselý, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Matějka, Zdeněk (referee)
In my thesis I analyze the diplomatic relations between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China and their influence not only on the Pacific region but also on the rest of the world. The thesis relies especially on written pieces on the topic as there is sufficient amount of them with regard to the broadness of the topic. The aim of the thesis is to describe the development of the diplomatic relations between the two states in the international framework, to record the circumstances which forced each state to take the position to another and the impact which the development of mutual relations had to the world. The thesis is divided into 4 chapters. The first chapter maps the period of the time from the end of the 19th century to the establishment of the People's Republic of China. It deals with the problems of the open door policy, The World War Two and the following third Chinese civil war. The second chapter investigates the Korean War and its incidence on the mutual relations. Next chapter is focused on the normalization of the mutual diplomatic relations in particular in the 1970s. In the last chapter I analyze creation of the triangular diplomacy, the impact of the normalization on the Pacific region and the admission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations.

E-procurement in the Member States of the European Union
Nop, Michal ; Tichý, Luboš (advisor) ; Král, Richard (referee)
E-procurement in the Member States of the European Union This paper aims to systemise data of e-procurement with regard to the legal rules in the Member States of the Eumpean Union, eSpecially in the Czech Republic. The objective of this thesis is to provide a comparison of the situation in public procurement across and within the Member States. In the EU, there were adopted new Procurement Directives, 2004/ l 7/EC and 2004/18/EC, in April 2004. Member States were required to implement the new legal framework by 31 January 2006, but slippages were not excluded. Early adoption of the new e-procurement provisions is essential to avoid barriers to and distortion of competition. The Directives provide a coherent framework for conducting procurement electronically in an Open, transparent and non-discriminatory way, establish rules for tendering electronically and fix the conditions for modern purchasing techniques based on electronic means of communication. The implementation of Directives' provisions on a dynamic purchasing system and e-auctions is optional. However, most of the Member States have introduced these procurement procedures. If not all Member States implemented electronic procedures, the differences between them could cause problems. Such a situation is not favourable for the deveIOpment of the...

Journey of a Hero: The Treatment of Mythology in the Work of William Butler Yeats
Vošahlíková, Martina ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Grmela, Josef (referee)
The thesis deals primarily with the influence of mythology in the work of William Butler Yeats and particularly focuses on his depiction of the ancient Celtic warrior Cuchulainn. The work briefly introduces the background of Irish mythology and its recordings; however the main interest lies in the interpretation of the myth by the Irish literary movement represented by W.B. Yeats and its contribution to the constitution of Ireland's national identity. The literary portrayal is contrasted with the way the hero Cuchualinn was recalled by the political leaders of the Irish revolution to illustrate the process of national symbols' formation. The challenge of the resulting establishment exemplified by the work of Mary T. Condren in the final part of the thesis points out to the opportunity of intentional selection of such symbols and opens the discussion of art's authority and influence.

Evaluation of version control support in Integrated Development Environments for Java
Říha, Jan ; Pavlíček, Luboš (advisor) ; Kamenišťák, Marián (referee)
Source Code Management Systems belong to the most important tools used for the software development. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to establish criteria and then to evaluate a support of these systems in Integrated Development Environments for Java. Subversion has been chosen as the relevant SCM System, because it is significantly favoured among open source software developers. According to the features of this system, the author establishes detailed criteria that given IDEs should meet. Then, the most common IDEs aimed at the Java development are examined on their meeting these criteria. In the conclusion of this thesis are expressed direct results of the testing and also some general suggestions concerning a next development of these products.
