English abstract The use of propaganda and methods of governing and regulation of the regional press in Czechoslovakia during 1948-1956 (using the example of the guidelines of KV and OV KSČ and the region around Liberec) The presented study follows the development of censorship and the methods of media and press control in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to1953, and in particular during 1956. This study focuses mainly on the methods and processes used by the Czechoslovak Communist Party to dominate the media and how it concentrated namely on the relationship between local and regional media and the centralized governance under the powerful influence of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. After February of 1948, the mass media in Czechoslovakia took on a different role than the one it had up until that time. Even so, up until 1953, there was no official censorship office and the media fell under the jurisdiction of the Party apparatus, or alternately under the Ministries of Education, Science and Arts or Information, which accordingly managed and influenced media content. However, it was still under the curatorship of the UV Czechoslovak Communist Party, as the following work will show. During 1945-1953, it helped Communist Party of Czechoslovakia through its ideolocical activity in gaining political power. This work introduces very dynamic and interesting postwar era - a transition from one authoritarian to another, and the way communists effectively got key bodies and institutions under their control. Ministry of Enquiry is an evidence of a close connection between state and partial interest. Its main task was to gain control over public communication and to tailor this to the needs of the Communist Party. This piece of writing describes a connection between the most important contemporary mass-medium (broadcast) and state and partial bodies that influenced the broadcasting. Key body was the Ministry of Enquiry in this process. Yet before the political coup in February 1948, it managed to change the form of Czechoslovak Broadcast so much that the Broadcast supported Communist Party before, during and after the coup. In the following years, whole Czechoslovak society went under the control of Communist Party, which also influenced broadcasting even more. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Ethics of the self as an aesthetics of existence in Wharton's "The house of mirth" and "The age of innocence"
Černá, Pavlína ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Rhoads, Bonita (referee)
Most Edith Wharton scholars have argued The House of Mirth1 (1905) and The Age of Innocence2 (1920) to be naturalist novels interwoven with and based upon socio-economic determinism. Feminist critics, such as Judith Fetterley and Cynthia Griffin Wolff, have depicted Lily Bart in The House of Mirth as a victim of patriarchal society; meanwhile, Marxist critics like Wai-Chee Dimock have been preoccupied with the omnipresent power of the marketplace in the novel. In the case of The Age of Innocence, the criticism has often focused on Wharton's usage of the tribal world of manners as the determining and inescapable force in an individual's life.3 This thesis will engage in reading The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence as naturalist novels with an emphasis on the notion of human conduct and ethics.
