Volumetric model of human vocal folds
Vampola, T. ; Horáček, Jaromír
The article describes the vollumetric 3D FE model of real human vocal folds in a defined phonation position. The model was developed from the CT images of the plaster casts obtained by a special procedure during experiments with the excised human larynges, when the phonatioon caused by the airflow was suddenly stopped without changing the position of the fixed larynx. The model is determined for studies of dynamical stresses in the vocal fold tissue during vocal folds collisions.

Application of affinity capillary electrophoresis for quantitative characterization of hexaarylbenzene-based receptor binding with alkali metal ions in methanol
Ehala, Sille ; Makrlík, E. ; Toman, Petr ; Kašička, Václav
Affinity capillary electrophoresis was found to be suitable and effective tool for the quantitative evaluation of strong as well as weak interactions between hexaarylbenzene-based receptor and several alkali metal ions in methanol. The selectivity of the above receptor expressed by binding constants towards alkali metal ions was found to increase in the order of Na+ < Li+ < K+ < Cs+ < Rb+.

Interaction between TiAl melt and coated oxide refractories
Dočekalová, Kateřina ; Dlouhý, Antonín ; Zemčík, L. ; Fiala, J.
The present study focuses on reactions between ceramic crucibles and molten TiAl intermetallics. Coating strategies are investigated that exhibit a potential in slowing down the decomposition of the crucible wall. Uncoated crucibles (system TiAl melt - Al2O3 crucible) and crucibles with the coat (system TiAl melt - CaO coat - Al2O3 crucible) were used in melting and casting experiments. The reference state of the coated crucible before the melting trial was also investigated. Results of the SEM, EDAX and X-ray diffraction analysis contributed to the identification of the reaction zone and its chemical composition. The melt contamination with oxide inclusions results from the erosion process in which individual components of the melt diffuse along grain boundaries of the refractory and activate chemical reactions that decompose the crucible wall. Assessment of thermodynamic parameters associated with the chemical reactions helped in identifying the nature of the erosion process.

Gender Selection as a Topic of Bioethics
Hendlová, Tereza ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Kiczková, Zuzana (referee)
My thesis focuses on the topic of gender selection (deliberate determination of the child's gender which is now possible thanks to recent developments in reproductive medicine) from the perspective of biomedical ethics. The main question is whether the practise of gender selection complies with the 4 basic principles of bioethics against which all medical action should be assessed (principle of autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence and justice). In the thesis, I distinguish between two main types of gender selection: gender selection for medical and non-medical reasons. The main focus is put on the second type, which is more ethically disputable, as it is not as directly related to the child's health and well-being as the first type. Gender selection for non-medical reasons is practiced in the context of multiple interactions of social, political, economic and other factors that all inform parental choices. One of the very influential factors is the medical discourse. For the purpose of complex contextualisation of gender selection for non-medical reasons, the concept of procreative liberty (introduced by J.A. Robertson) and feminist critiques of reproductive choices are presented. My main argument is that gender selection for non-medical reasons should not be legal and available as it has a high potential...

Contacts betweeen family and school on elementary school
Lívancová, Šárka ; Hadj - Moussová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Viktorová, Ida (referee)
Diploma thesis discusses the communication between family and teachers, especially the specific aspects of this interaction considering small schools. The communication between parents and teachers is one of the important parts of coordination of parents and school. Communication can be divided into direct, represented by f a c e - t o - f a ce contact between parents and teachers, and indirect, which comprise telephone conversation and other messages delivered by the pupils. This t h e s i s focuses on the direct type of communication. It aims to describe s p e c i f i c forms of direct communication in context of s p e c i f i c traits of r e l a t ed environment. We assume, that the village environment, which is common for small schools, doesn't suffer of anonymity of large cities, and that people in this environment generally have closer contacts with each other. Small schools are schools for 6 to 11 years old, o f f e r i n g only the primary level of education, for which the higher rate of p a r e n t - t e a c h e r i n t e r a c t i o n is typical. In these small schools, the primary education has the p o s s i b i l i t y to preserve i t ' s autonomy, and it i s n ' t influenced by the secondary level education, which appears to be dominant, when the both levels are combined. Last but not least...

Fatigue failure mechanism of nickel-based superalloy Inconel 713LC under 800°C
Smékalová, Jana ; Juliš, Martin (referee) ; Hutařová, Simona (advisor)
Nickel superalloys are used for high-temperature application in energetic and aerospace industry. They are exposed to aggressive environment at high temperatures with the interactions between fatigue and creep processes, high-temperature oxidation, corrosion and erosion. Lifetime extension of such strained parts while increasing the performance of particular machine is possible by applying protective surface coatings. The subject of this work is to investigate the fatigue failure mechanisms of superalloy Inconel 713LC at 800 °C and to compare these mechanisms between material with a protective coating based on Al-Si and material without coating. The location of initiation fatigue cracks, their propagation and the fatigue crack propagation rate in some areas were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Based on previous research it was found that the application of the coating AlSi has a positive effect on lifetime of alloy Inconel 713LC. These results were confirmed and estimated in the diploma thesis.

The Role of Gut Microbiota and Lipopolysachaide Content of the Diet in the Development, Maturation and Function of the Immune System
Hrnčíř, Tomáš ; Tlaskalová - Hogenová, Helena (advisor) ; Prokešová, Ludmila (referee) ; Macela, Aleš (referee)
Mammals are essentially born germ-free but the epithelial surfaces are promptly colonized by astounding numbers of bacteria soon after birth. The most extensive microbial community is harboured by the distal intestine. The gut microbiota outnumbers ~10 times the total number of our somatic and germ cells. The hostmicrobiota relationship has evolved to become mutually beneficial. Studies in germfree mice have shown that gut microbiota is essential for the proper development of the immune system. The pivotal role of the innate immune system in the complex and dynamic host-microbiota interactions has become increasingly evident. The principal aims of the present study were: firstly, to determine whether LPS-rich sterile diet can promote maturation of the immune system in germ-free mice, secondly, to elucidate whether gut microbiota and LPS-rich sterile diet influence the LPS susceptibility, and finally, to investigate a role of the adaptive immunity in endotoxin shock. Our data clearly show that both live gut microbiota and LPS-rich sterile diet increase susceptibility to endotoxin shock. Further, we demonstrate that immunodeficient SCID mice, which lack mature B and T cells, are more sensitive to endotoxin shock than immunocompetent Balb/c mice. In addition, we show that not only live gut microbiota but also...
