Change of Periurban Country Housing
Ferenc, Jonáš
Contribution to the conference will deal with the analysis of rural settlements, lying in close proximity and relation to medium-sized cities (former county or region capitals, up to about 100 000 inhabitants). These villages are often administrative part of the cities which have spread to them. They have lost the primary function (agriculture), they are subject of extensive urbanization, social functions and commerce are moved to the city. Suburban villages are transformed to mere residential area without its own original content and importance as a local centre. Little by little, suburban villages are transformed from country environment into urban district, but they retain some of their own character and specifics. Apart from the largest cities (in Czech Republic it is Prague and partly Brno) they do not change their traditional urban structure. Village so retains its original plan with central space (square). Contribution presents a historical analysis of the development of suburban villages and opportunities, how to work with ongoing urbanization of country centre and villages itself.

Katovská, Jitka ; Ebelová, Ivana (referee) ; Hojda, Zdeněk (advisor)
The institution of St. Paul 's Hospital in Prague belongs to social-charitable institutions that had taken care of the needed poor, ill, old, widows and orphans in the early modern period. The history of St. Paul 's Hospital had taken place in the area behind Poříčská brána and after the thirty year 's war in so called Temple. Certain amount of information, explaining not only economic and administrative functioning of St. Paul 's Hospital but also the history of day-to-day activities of the inhabitants, has been preserved in the hospital books in the Archive of the capital city Prague. The research was conducted with methods of participant observations and semi-structured interviews. In the course of the research it turned out that the gardeners demonstrate lots of common characteristics, however, their attitudes and values are different in substantial aspects. This is connected with the extent of their cultivation of fruits and vegetables. It also appeared that this fact is strongly related to the age and to the extent of busyness of the garden plot users. The analysis reflects these findings and besides the description of the gardeners as one social group it also refers deeply to each of the gardener groups. The outcomes of the thesis can help to understand to the...

Analysis of the novels and short stories by Hermann Ungar
Foltánková, Marie ; Stromšík, Jiří (referee) ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor)
Hermann Ungar (1893-1929), a native of Boskovice in Moravia, whose work is part of the Prague - or rather Moravian - German literary tradition, studied law in Prague and was an employee of the Czechoslovak embassy in Berlin. Ungar's literary career began with the publication of a collection oftwo stories, "Boys and Murderers" (1920), which aroused substantial interest in literary circ1es. Thomas Mann saw in Ungar great promise for post-war German prose. With his first novel, "The Maimed" (1922), Ungar confirmed the analytical character ofhis prose, which did not shy away from uncovering even the most concealed pI aces and the greatest taboos of the human psyche. Ungar's heroes are often intemally tom, victims of a traumatic childhood and a society that degrades them to the point that they are only "machines" incapable of deeper interpersonal relationships. It is thus very difficult for them to find the way to themselves and to others. While still working as an official of the Czechoslovak embassy, Ungar published short stories and sketches in magazines in Czechoslovakia and Germany. These short works showed readers his peculiar sense ofhumour. Ungar's second novel, "The Class" (1927), which is set in pre-war Bmo, was the author's apotheosis oflove and respect for others. By an irony of fate Hermann Ungar...
