Analysis of Book Publisher's Marketing Tools

This Master's thesis entitled Analysis of Book Publisher's Marketing Tools focuses on the Czech book market and marketing tools that are currently used by book publishers. The aim of the work is to evaluate marketing tools of the specific Czech book publisher based on qualitative research and suggest possible improvements in their use. The theoretical part contains definitions of basic concepts in the field of book publishing and book marketing, which serves as the basis for the practical part. The practical part deals with the analysis of marketing tools of book publisher Argo, presents pros and cons of these instruments and in the end, brings suggestions for their improvement. This part of the thesis is based on marketing situation analysis, on analysis of available data on publisher's activities and on an interview with one of its writers. This thesis is primarily valuable for book publishers and sellers, who can obtain information about possible marketing tools. For book readers, this thesis is particularly interesting in terms of obtaining information about how marketing tools can help them in the selection of books.

Dramatic work of Josef Tejkl

This Bachelor thesis is devoted to the work of Josef Tejkl (1952/2009), playwright, director, novelist and artist, particularly to his dramatic activity. In an attempt to give a comprehensive survey of the dramatist‘s works not published up to now, I am endeavouring to analyse Tejkl‘s dramatic work viewed through literary Baroque style. In the works of Tejkl Baroque trends can be clearly seen. I want to point out my own thesis, which is that Baroque themes determine the understanding of Josef Tejkl‘s almost whole output. This Bachelor treatise also aims at helping the complete cataloguing of all works of this author in the hope that in future at least a part of Tejkl‘s dramatic output will find its publisher.

The correspondence of Václav Havel

The thesis prepares for publishing letters, which Václav Havel sent to people, who were at least one generation older: Václav Černý, Josef Hiršal, Vladimír Holan, Jiří Kolář, Jindřich Chalupecký, Jaroslav Seifert and Josef Šafařík. Havel might have considered or have indeed considered them his teachers, be it for a certain period or in a certain area. The thesis also contains a possible book introduction, in which the author describes the artistic youth and ripening of Václav Havel and identifies ties, which connect Václav Havel with the culture of the First Republic.

Czech translation of contemporary Italian literature and their translators

The objective of this bachelor´s thesis is to characterize selected works of contemporary Italian literature which is getting into the Czech literary context through Czech translations. The thesis deals with literary works dating from 1991 to 2011, which are analyzed from the point of view of genres and themes. It focuses of the reception of this literature within Czech readers´ environment. The work describes which strategies of edition are being used by publishing houses to choose the works of contemporary Italian literature and it also shows the role of extra-literary factors and translators. The thesis comprises indexes and short portraits of authors, translators and other authorities concerned.

The phenomenon of peregrination around castle ruins in the first half of the 19th century. Edition and contentual analyse of three Karel Kramerius's travelling diaries

In the years 1814, 1815 and 1818 Karel Kramerius (1797-1874), a son of a famous publisher and journalist Václav Matěj Kramerius (1753-1808), realized with his friends Karel Michel and Jan Šťasný three great holiday travels over Bohemia. Aims of these travels were mainly castle ruins, speechless witnesses of the past that Karel Kramerius desired to become acquainted with so much. This rigorous work presents to reader mainly the edition of three travelling diaries, which Karel Kramerius wrote during these travels. Apart from detailed descriptions of the castle ruins, often accompanied by self-made drawing, the diaries also contain descriptions of other historic buildings (manor-houses, monasteries, natural monuments), countryside, progress of travel and events, which diversified travelling from one village to another to the travelers. During getting to know their homeland they met revivalists, relations, friends and common people. Karel Kramerius grew up in a revivalist environment created by the national revival which had already been in progress, and in an epoch of the beginning of the Czech romantic period. Czech perception of Claudel's Break of Noon

The master's thesis focuses on a translatological analysis of the original text and two available translations of the Break of Noon, a play written by a significant French playwright and diplomat Paul Claudel. Miloš Marten was the first to translate the play into Czech in 1910. The second translation was done by Vladimír Mikeš and was published in 2012. Given the time span of more than a hundred years between the translations, it is not only interesting to compare them linguistically but also to make a comparison of their reception. Therefore, the thesis deals with the reception of the texts and its development over time. The thesis defines Paul Claudel's place in French culture in the past and today and how its play is perceived in the Czech context. The thesis studies the position of the first translation in the time of its publishing and right after it. The thesis seeks to determine the reasons for the second translation to be commissioned and assess the position of the new text in the target culture. To determine the position of the translations in the Czech context and their potential effect on the culture, the thesis uses the polysystem theory which seems to be the most convenient tool as it studies to what extent translation literature affects domestic literature.
