Impact of leisure and social activites on quality of life among erderly in Europe - SHARE data analysis
Pluhařová, Markéta
Impact of leisure and social activites on quality of life among erderly in Europe - SHARE data analysis Abstract Due to demographic aging, the quality of life of an increasing proportion of seniors is becoming more important than ever. According to activity theory and the concept of active aging, active life is a way to experience good old age. The diploma thesis focuses on the impacts of leisure and social activities on the quality of life of elderly over 65 in 17 European countries. Sixth wave data from The Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) from 2015 and the easySHARE panel dataset are analyzed using binary regression analysis and multilevel modeling using binary regression analysis. The relationship of 11 selected activities, which were divided for the needs of this thesis into social, individual activities and activities aimed at helping others, and quality of life is controlled for socio-economic, demographic and health characteristics. Quality of life is meassured using the CASP-12 indicator. For social and individual activities, active elderly have a higher chance of a high quality of life (CASP-12 score> 39) than inactive. Elderly who do not provide personal care assistance to people from the same household also have a better chance than caregivers. Key words ageing, ageing of...
Fire as an alternative way of the landscape management
Maximov, Fedor ; Novák, Jan (advisor) ; Adámek, Martin (referee)
Prescribed burning is a method that has been used since prehistoric times to keep unforested areas. In pastures, fire was used to remove dead biomass, return nutrients to the soil and improve forage quality, as well as to convert forests fields to a shifting agriculture. The abandonment of burning in the last century has led to an accumulation of plant biomass in the landscape. This, combined with global warming, is now creating the threat of dangerous fires. In 2022, controlled burning was allowed in the Czech Republic as a way of managing habitats that are at risk of becoming woodland without proper management. Rare heliophilous plant and animal species are tied to them. It would therefore be advisable to reintroduce this management method, together with monitoring and control of its effects on species and communities. The aim of this backelor thesis is to summarise the existing knowledge about prescribed burning in Europe. It also describes how controlled burning affects the dynamics of dry grasslands and heathlands. The main focus is on attributes of controlled burning that can be used to maintain selected habitats. Keywords: fire, vegetation, landscape management, succession
Planetary boundary layer height estimation
Růžičková, Barbora ; Zíková, Naděžda (advisor) ; Holubová Šmejkalová, Adéla (referee)
The planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) is a key parameter for investigating interactions between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere, especially for air quality assessment and pollutants' dispersion. The PBLH is highly variable in time and space as is influenced by a number of factors originating both in the atmosphere and at the Earth's surface. In this bachelor thesis, the PBLH and mixing layer height (MLH) measured at the National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice over the three-year period 2020-2022 using the Vaisala CL61 ceilometer were evaluated. For both observed variables, a significant difference was found between the values measured in summer and winter: 1710 ± 760 m and 1010 ± 650 m for PBLH, 920 ± 700 m and 420 ± 330 m for MLH. Significant diurnal variability was also observed, with maxima at 15:00 UTC and minima at 03:00 UTC for PBLH and maxima at 14:00 UTC and minima at 22:00 UTC for MLH. The relationship between planetary boundary layer height and the occurrence of cyclonic and anticyclonic synoptic situations was also investigated, but was not conclusive due to the complexity of the weather patterns of each synoptic situation. In vitro fertilization in horses
Müller, Filip ; Šušor, Andrej (advisor) ; Šimoník, Ondřej (referee)
Reproductive management in horse breeding increasingly relies on in vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques. This technology entails a complex process, including the acquisition of immature oocytes, their in vitro maturation, fertilization with sperm, and subsequent cultivation of the early embryo before transfer into a synchronized recipient. However, the success of equine IVF is influenced by various factors such as oocyte quality, sperm capacitation, and technical issues unique to this process, compared to other mammalian models. This bachelor's thesis aims to summarize and evaluate current knowledge on IVF of horse eggs, identify key factors influencing success, and describe current procedures for gamete preparation. By incorporating the latest IVF approaches and optimizing them, a higher success rate can be achieved. Key aspects for improving equine IVF include gamete collection and handling, in vitro oocyte maturation, sperm capacitation, and subsequent embryonic development.
Effect of acute sleep deprivation in different light conditions on the quality of recovery sleep
Zeithamlová, Barbora ; Kopřivová, Jana (advisor) ; Vlček, Kamil (referee)
Sleep is regulated by homeostatic and circadian processes. The circadian process is controlled by the internal biological clock, which is regularly synchronised with the external world by so-called zeitgebers. The most important zeitgeber for humans is light, therefore incorrect timing of light signals can lead to desynchronisation of the clock and sleep disruption; however, this depends on the intensity and spectral characteristics of the light. Dimmed red light is unlikely to significantly interfere with sleep regulation, but white light with a higher intensity could. White light is typically used when people stay awake during the night and experience acute total sleep deprivation. This could potentially interfere with the compensatory mechanisms occurring during subsequent recovery sleep. We therefore decided to test whether and how different lighting conditions during sleep deprivation can affect the structure of recovery sleep. We had 12 healthy uniform volunteers undergo two acute total sleep deprivations; one under normal white light, the other under dim red light. Using polysomnography, we measured the sleep parameters of both recovery sleeps and compared them. It turned out that sleep that occurred after the sleep deprivation in constant dim light conditions was less fragmented, had...
The effect of sleep on muscle hypertrophy
Toušková, Barbora ; Skálová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Kolář, David (referee)
Sleep represents one of the fundamental aspects of human life and health, influencing many physiological functions including muscle hypertrophy. Sleep is regulated by various external and internal stimuli, such as the circadian rhythm, body temperature, gene expression, and the synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters such as melatonin and adenosine. Muscle hypertrophy is a complex process of enlarging muscle fibers, which is associated with numerous metabolic processes and signaling pathways, including the IGF-1-PI3K-Akt- mTOR axis, and is regulated by hormones such as testosterone, GH, myostatin, and activin. Most of these hypertrophic factors are closely linked to quality and sufficient duration of sleep. Sleep deprivation negatively affects almost all processes involved in muscle hypertrophy and, in the long term, leads to muscle loss instead. Key words: Sleep, circadian rhythm, melatonin, muscle hypertrophy, Akt, mTOR, sleep deprivation
