Proposals of Practical Excercises in Zoology Based on Protists and Invertebrates from Freshwater Aquaria

This thesis deals with proposals for practical exercises using freshwater aquaria in teaching elementary schools and junior high schools that focus on protozoa and invertebrates. The main aim of the thesis is to propose practical exercises using elements of inquiry-based science education. Using identification cards of protozoa and microscopic invertebrates, pupils can learn about these organisms during laboratory exercises with microscopes. A total of fourteen cards with representatives of protozoa, invertebrates, algae and cyanobacteria typical of freshwater aquariums are presented. Each of the identification cards contains a basic description, as well as a procedure for the pupils to observe and draw the organism. They are accompanied by a photograph, a pen drawing and a QR code that links to a video of the observation of the representative under the microscope. Another proposal is a practical exercise focusing on the food chain of standing water. Also included is a worksheet focusing on independent laboratory work by students on water quality analysis using the Pasco laboratory technique. How does the taught zoological system affect achieved knowledge of zoology

This diploma thesis deals with the current system of vertebrates and its use during teaching in the seventh grade of primary schools. The aim of this work is to design two types of teaching materials for teachers, one on the basis of the simplified system of vertebrates (following the results of the bachelor's thesis), the other on the basis of common used system according to textbooks. As a part of determining the results in individual classes, a didactic test was constructed. The compilation of the current form of the zoological system of vertebrates and also the analysis of the selected biology textbooks for primary schools and the lower grades of grammar schools are included in the literary review of the thesis.

Zoological preparation techniques in school practice

This thesis consists of description of chosen methods of permanent macroscopic zoological preparations. I verified successfully all the methods in practice and in case of methodological difficulties I optimized them for use in the school environment. In this work I answered the questions that could come up throughout the preparation process, for example: how to preserve the animal correctly; where to acquire the animal legally; what is the best way to maintain the animal's natural colour; what materials to use for the preparation and so on. According to current approaches I created not only a text based version of the manual of all verified preparation methods, but also an online version in form of a web site. To clarify the methods I included video sequences, photographs and schemes. With this e- learning course a teacher will be able to extend the school collection with his own preparations and also will be able to recognize what significant characteristics to point out. As a part of my work I have done a questionnaire focused on using various types of equipment in biology lectures. I have asked primary school teachers and high school teachers from all regions in the Czech Republic. This questionnaire was sent online and 322 out of 1636 people responded. Communities of protists and invertebrate animals in freshwater aquaria and possibilities of their use in teaching

This bachelor thesis focuses on the hidden but very diverse community of protists and microscopic invertebrates in freshwater aquaria. Samples of these micro-organisms were obtained from microscopic slides submerged in aquaria for several weeks. The main output of this thesis is a multimedia didactical atlas of characteristic protists and invertebrates inhabiting freshwater aquaria. In total, eleven members from two phyla of protists and six phyla of invertebrate animals are presented using own original micrographs and short videosequences. The atlas was prepared in two forms - a text document and a web page. Potential of the atlas for use in biology teaching and extracurricular education is discussed. Preferences of pupils for different zoological objects in biology lessons

The main object of this thesis was to find out whether grammar school students prefer zoological objects in biology lessons presented a) on photo in their natural habitat or b) the real specimen presented in liquid in glass cylinders and burettes. I have chosen these research questions: 1. In which form do pupils prefer zoological objects, the real specimen presented in liquid in glass cylinders or burettes or in their natural habitat on a photograph? 2. How do these preferences differ during the course of their high school study? 3. How do these preferences differ according to gender? 4. Are these preferences influenced by a specific animal? 5. Are these preferences influenced by other factors, e.g. by the appearance and personal experiences with live nature or frequency of using these objects in biology lessons. The research was implemented by using a questionnaire and a preferential test and was given to first and third year students from five Prague high schools. The conclusion of my research study shows that students prefer neither animals on photographs nor the real specimen presented as a liquid preparation. Scientific and Educational Illustration in Zoology

Bachelor thesis is focusing on scientific illustration in zoology, its form and progression in history. It characterizes concept of scientific illustration, individual types and techniques used for its creation in drawing and printing. It also deals with important aspects in the creation of zoological drawing. The work focuses on historical development of depiction of animals from primary art to photographically accurate zoological drawing in the 20th century, while in each period are defined several examples of depictions. The second part of the bachelor's thesis describes and evaluates 9 historical depictions of animals from different periods and then compares them with own creation of specific animals.

Do the pupils of lower secondary education as more attractive real mounted zoological specimens or their models?

The aim of this thesis is to find out, with the help of a questionnaire survey and a preferential test, the preferences of pupils of lower secondary education for various types of teaching aids in biology. The preferential test was carried out on real zoological preparations (liquid cylinders, eventually embedded in resin) and on corresponding 3D educational models made of plastic or other modeling materials. The research is a follow-up to a diploma thesis examining the same preferences in upper secondary school students (Šibravová, 2016). The main objective is to extend this issue to younger pupils and to compare the results of both age groups. The goal is to find out whether and how the preferences change with the age of pupils and if it is necessary to adjust the choice of teaching aids in accordance to pupils' age. The first pilot research was carried out on one class of a grammar school. Then other classes of lower secondary education in Prague were tested. The total number of respondents was almost 200 pupils. This was followed by statistical processing and data evaluation. The results showed that 3D teaching models are better rated for lower secondary education than the corresponding real zoological preparations. This is the exact opposite to the results of upper secondary school students....
