The Peak and the Territory
Mlynarčík, Štefan ; Smetana, Matěj (referee) ; Rathouský, Luděk (advisor)
The thesis is focused on symbolic revision of altitudes and border points of Tatra peaks. The subtle gesture disturbs exact and unambiguous textbook perception of a peak´s height. The thesis is happening on the given summits, the material used on their „growth“ and „transfer“ originates exclusively from immediate surroundings. The period of new summit´s existence is exposed to various weather conditions, eventualy to human factor, thus we can consider it as undetermined in terms of time. The issue consists of 5 video documentations of actions on the given Tatra peaks. The thesis is not exhausted by this. On the contrary, it promises spontaneous long-termed continuation.

Privatization of banks in Slovakia and its impact on bank market
Soták, Branislav ; Půlpán, Karel (advisor) ; Slavíček, Ján (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the transition and privatization of banks in Slovak Republic. In the beginning, it describes the theoretical background of financial transition. It then copes with the emergence of two-tiered banking and privatization and its implications for the uprise of a Slovak specific corporate governance model, in which banks played a crucial role. The third part investigates problems of the development of the banking sector until late 90s, mostly the vast non-performing loan portfolio. These problems eventually led to a banking crises, that was necessary to be solved via costly restructuring and privatization of banks with the entry of strategic foreign investors, the fourth part describes the process. The last part is dedicated to an empirical analysis of the impact of various ownership forms on the cost efficiency of banks in the sample of Czech and Slovak banks in the period 1996-2005. To estimate the efficiency we use the stochastic frontier approach with the translog specification of the cost function. The results support the hypothesis that privatized banks are more cost efficient than stateowned banks.
Gift of Life. In Response to Derrida's Gift of Death.
Badurová, Tatiana ; Marek, Jakub (advisor) ; Petkanič, Milan (referee)
The presented philosophical-anthropological interpretation seeks to examine the issue of existential transformation and its understanding in the works of selected authors, in particular Jacques Derrida, Jan Patočka and Søren Kierkegaard. It builds upon a specific interpretation of philosophy as a source of normative images that determine the ways of man's self- understanding. From the perspective of philosophical anthropology, "being human" is the result of man's being interested in his own being. Thus it definitely cannot be considered an innate quality. Man's "humanness" is conditioned by his strive to live a truthful life. Hence, the focus of the interpretation is on the relation between the tradition and the individual sense- making as well as on the motives of death and mortality, constitution of individuality, responsability, interiority, faith and transformation.

Masarikova, Miroslava ; Teplý, Petr (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee) ; Ji, Yuemei (referee)
The aim of this dissertation is to provide a detailed quantitative and qualitative assessment of the banking system currently in place in the Visegrad countries, as well as its transition from the Soviet system to a capitalist market-oriented system. The empirical part of this study focuses on estimating the stability of the banking system, the impact of regulations and supervision on the stability of this system the performance and effectiveness (productivity) of the system, and the impact of banking sector performance on economic growth. Two different methods are used for the data analysis: panel data regression with random effect model and traditional ratio analysis based on DuPont formula and other financial ratios, which were constructed using historical data taken from Bank Scope, together with random-effects GLS regression. The results suggest that, as measured by z-score, Slovakia had the most stable banking sector in most years, followed by Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Additionally, according to the regression analysis, the imposition of strict requirements for banks applying for licenses in Visegrad countries has led to greater banking system stability, while prohibiting additional banking activities-such as real estate, insurance, securities, or other non-financial...

Social security vs. Personal liberties. So called normalization and transformation period from Krompachy citizens'perspective. Biographic Narrations
Merjavá, Jana ; Schindler-Wisten, Petra (advisor) ; Houda, Přemysl (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to affect opinions and attitudes of residents of a small town in the east Slovakia to the society during the period of normalization and transformation. These aims are achieved by exploiting the method of oral history and using mainly data obtained in biographical interviews with eight locals as a primary source of information. Their statements are thoroughly analysed and interpreted in two counterparts. Regarding the normalization period, social security was the main subject for analysis, namely the phenomenon of labour, housing, and social services for families with children, while in respect of the period of transformation, personal freedom of expression, movement, and religion has been analysed. Finally, all the obtained conclusions are compared with the available scientific literature in the given field. This thesis aims to affect mainly how the mentioned phenomena were perceived by the individual narrators and how this perception has changed after the year 1989. As part of the conclusion and using all the findings this work provides a comparison of the studied periods; however, an imaginary battle between social security and individual freedoms remains undecided. Moreover, beside the actual analysis the thesis contains a methodological section as well as a section...
