The Theory of Communication as an Explanatory Principle for the Natural Multilevel Text Segmentation
Milička, Jiří ; Zemánek, Petr (advisor) ; Cvrček, Václav (referee) ; Altmann, Gabriel (referee)
1. Phonemes, words, clauses and sentences are not a logical necessity of language, unlike distinctive features and morphemes. 2. Despite this, such nested segmentation is very firmly present in languages and in our concepts of language description, 3. because nested segmentation and inserting redundancy on multiple levels is an efficient way to get the language signal through the burst-noise channel. 4. There are various strategies how redundancy can be added and what kind of redundancy can be added. 5. The segment delimiter is expressed by some additional information and the amount of delimiting information is independent from the length of the seg- ment it delimits. This principle can serve as a basis for a successful model for the Menzerath's relation.

Theoretical predictions of the impact of a noisy channel on interpreters' performance in simultaneous interpretation and their empirical verification
Volenová, Eva ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Ďoubalová, Jana (referee)
This thesis explores the issue of noise in the simultaneous interpreting process, using the concept of noise as defined in information theory and the model of communication developed by Claude Shannon. The theoretical section of this thesis first offers a brief explanation of the basic concepts involved in information theory, followed by a description of Shannon's model. Selected models of interpreting are then introduced based on this model of communication. A list of potential types of noise is then presented based on the literature examined that may have an impact on the interpreter during simultaneous interpreting. The empirical section of this thesis consists of a questionnaire and an experiment. The questionnaire determines to what extent interpreters find the potential types of noise from the list created in the theoretical section disruptive in their work. The list of types of noise is also expanded based on respondents' answers. The questionnaire also determines what strategies respondents employ to overcome adverse factors. The new types of noise and strategies employed are described in this thesis using open-ended answers from the respondents. The experiment tests the impact of a burst-noise channel on simultaneous interpreting. A total of 13 respondents took part in the experiment,...

Design and creation of advanced software modules for managing documents and informations in a small business
Soukup, Milan ; Střížová, Vlasta (advisor) ; Zelinka, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis deals with the theory of information within the framework of the socio-economic systems. The first part includes consultation of theories that relate to information and other information needs, including drawing implications for the chosen target segment of microfirms. The practical part is devoted to the design and creation of advanced software module for the information management and documents of the selected small company. The resulting application is put into practice, the benefits are measured and recommendations for further development are identified.
Estimated probability of unrepeatable events
Novák, Vít ; Hebák, Petr (advisor) ; Černý, Michal (referee)
Anywhere we see a prognostication system; we can run up against the need of evaluating it. For the evaluation is frequently used unsuitable methods. There are such cases where is need to correctly take effects of mistakes into consideration. And here we can use statistic based on information measure either entropy. The first part deals with this point of issue. In the second part I am trying to show possible areas of use, for example betting. I enclose practical remarks from this issue and the methods making these estimators, which are dependent on nature of issued events.
